Editing video in a 486 with the FPS60
In my recent documentary about DVCAM I talked about the history of digital video and how it evolved from the analogical formats to the non-linear editing. But, how did we edit before DV?
Today I bring to you the FPS60, a video editing card by FAST multimedia released on the mid 90s and designed to work with computers as low as a 486.
So how was video editing when computers were far from actually being... editing capable?

Mini project: DIY PC Frame
Переглядів 1353 роки тому
On my last episode I fixed a Pentium motherboard and I basically mounted the parts directly on the table. This is not recommended for various reasons so given that I want to use this computer for some upcoming videos I thought that having some sort of frame would be great, but, why not just doing it myself?
Fixing a Pentium Motherboard

For my next series of projects I would like to have a usable computer with ISA expansion slots. So in this video I am going to build a Pentium133 from a pile of parts and replace the Dallas chip that prevents the motherboard from working properly.
The format DVCAM. Short history of digital video.
Переглядів 20 тис.3 роки тому
It was a lot of work to put together this short documentary about DVCAM. I hope you like it and consider to subscribe. DVCAM is a format developed by Sony and released in 1995. It is a variation of the DV format and it targets the lower end professional market. DVCAM along with DV or as many had known as mini-DV became standards for both amateurs and professionals. An affordable and versatile f...
Testing two MFM drives: Seagate ST-225
Переглядів 2,9 тис.4 роки тому
On the 80s, memory was expensive and the first personal computers usually didn’t have a hard drive installed, however when they did, those things were big, heavy and unreliable, perhaps here it comes the name ‘hard drive’. On today’s episode we are going to test 2 Seagate ST-225 drives, that use the MFM interface.
Mini project: Burning discs under the Sun
Переглядів 1044 роки тому
Today I want to present you a short video about CD and DVD-ROM, because there is something that I always found interesting about all recordable discs and are these alarming images and messages warning us what not to do, and in special the one warning about exposing the discs to the direct sunlight. But, how much sun is too much? Are my discs safe on the shelf getting a little of the sunset rays...
Pen Cameras
Переглядів 794 роки тому
In this video I am going to review 3 small digital cameras or ‘pen cameras’ from the early 2000’s This type of camera was a low cost option for capturing images on a moment when digital cameras were still quite expensive. The concept ‘pen’ comes from the odd shape they have, that makes them look like that 'neuralizer' device from the movie Men in Black. Designed more as a toy than as a camera, ...

First I am going to take a look at this old double speed Vertos CD-rom that I never managed to make it work in Windows 95 forcing me to but another drive. And second, we will explore the Pioneer A03 DVD recorder, one of the first DVD recorders and the one that made DVD authoring affordable.

Today I am going to review the JVC DR-M10 DVD video recorder. A device that I purchased on 2005 in order to save time while recording DVDs. On the early 2000s the process of DVD authoring was still quite time consuming. Many clients used to ask for copies of videos that my company recorded and that we had stored in tapes. When using VHS we could just simply copy the video from the master tape t...
Old TV Tuners for PC monitors.

There was a time when watching TV in your computer was a cool thing. Today I will be examining 2 external TV tuners that, back in the days would allow you to watch live TV directly in your computer monitor. The first one is an analog tv tuner while the second one is a digital one, that I purchased years ago to replace the first one when broadcast TV became digital.

D-Vision had a similar offline editor. You would ingest your logged tapes with timecode, do your edit using half-rez proxies on a 486, export an EDL, and bring the EDL on a floppy along with your source tapes to a rented edit bay to execute on their gear.

Hi there, I've got the same computer (but the 20Mhz version), adn the battery pack was just missing: I can build a new one the way you did, but I wonder if , as I guess , it's connected to the connector marked J12 in the database (just beside the AT P1/P2) connector. In your video looks like it comes from there but it's not visible, what birngs another question: which side is the red cable at, near the J or near the 2 in the J12 connector? I hope you can help.

Nice work! There’s no telling how many times I’ve had to deal with my own design flaws, often scrapping entire projects after spending way too much time on them. Anyway, to reinforce the base I would flip the ends 90° and use two screws for each-or a corner bracket on each side of each end of the frame. Mounted that way they should allow for a sturdy card cage should you decide to add one.

during the mid to late 90's and into the early 2000's, I used both DVCAM and DVCPRO (with cameras and VTR's). I loved both formats and I actually had the Matrox RT 2500 capture card lol !!! I loved it !! it was a no rendering, real time capture device that saved so much time !!!!! wow, those were the days man. if you did not live through the mid 90's to early 2000's in the video business, you haven't lived !!!!!! those of us who did, got the excitement of FIRST TIME switch over to giving clients DVD's as the final edited version rather than VHS. so many innovations in such a short period of time. WOW. - from linear editing to the jump to non linear computer editing was HUGE. I'm so thankful I was in the video business and got to experience the ride !

I had one of these when I was at Film School in the mid-90s, this was one of the first cheap cards that you could truly do non-linear editing on. My university didn't even have non-linear editing at the time, they had U-Matic and Betacam!! So when I got this and showed it to all my film school friends they all ordered one :) I was running mine on a Pentium 133. I remember one friend had a motherboard that refused to run it though, I spent ages trying to get it to work for him to no avail :(

I have exactly the same keyboard and it also needed restoration. The cabe got worn in the same way, and since I did not find a proper replacement I used ethernet cable and a new plug to fix it. I found those popup spring stands to be quite a challange to fit properly back in a case. And mine did not include worms :) Besides, it is good itea to use a brush (or burshed tip) while vacuming all the dirt inside.

I had one of these players back in 2002, but I sold it soon after when I discovered it had major design flaws. MP3 playback was REALLY BAD, because any music that had more mid to high frequency content, suffered from strange garbled artifacts. If the music was of genres that featured mainly bass frequencies, the design flaw never revealed itself. Also VideoCD playback was very unreliable and poor, e.g. you had to give it commercially produced discs otherwise it would be very choppy and out of sync. The only feature that worked without issues was plain ordinary CD music. I want to make clear that my player was not faulty, it was just badly affected by design issues.

I love these old drives. I have a lot of them in my vintage computer collection. The reason your drive is working without needing to put a drive type in the BIOS is due to using an 8-bit controller. 8-bit controllers have their own BIOS as they are meant for XT class PCs which do not include a drive table in their BIOS. 8-bit controllers are also very slow. Going to a 16 bit controller and running a 1 to 1 interleave with optimized sector and head skews, you can into the 400 KB/s access times. While not fast at all by today's standards, that's very good for MFM on a 286 / 386 class PC.
