AM Radio Band Scan - 1976

Scanning and surfing the AM radio band in Milwaukee in autumn of 1976. My only recording equipment at the time was a department-store cassette recorder and a basic radio playing its output to stereo headphones placed next to the cassette recorder's built-in microphone. Authentically vintage charm! I tried to capture each station's call letters when possible. Not always possible.

Another vintage icon known to the traveler is going, going gone - Highway Information on AM radio 530 or 1610. Listen to the broadcast and notice how it doesn't match the actual road conditions. WFAA 570 Talk - Dallas, TX October 17, 1978. Host: Kevin McCarthy. No, not the Republican leader in Congress. In the old days of talk radio, local hosts would often have "open line" hours where listeners were invited to call in to talk about *anything*. And some of the call-in topics are doozies!

ATIS - General Mitchell Field Information Lima Late Night Loop - October 1976, Milwaukee. A very early recording of mine when I first became fascinated by ATIS airport broadcasts. Interesting bit of trivia: The cassette tape itself was purchased in 1973 when I was 14. What you are hearing is from that original 49-year old tape. Cassette tape is a surprisingly durable medium if you take good car...

Beautiful Music: WEZW 103.7 FM Milwaukee, November 25, 1976, 3:32 PM. The sound quality is lower because I was only 17 years old and recorded it simply by placing stereo headphones around the cassette recorder's built-in microphone. It's actually a testimony to the longevity of cassette tape as a recording medium, because what you are hearing is the original 45 year old cassette tape.

It was true about Schwinn bikes back then when the bike racks in elementary schools were stuffed with bikes. Every suburban kid had one and rode it to school every day. In our neighborhood everyone got the AMF or Huffy for Christmas. When the lucky kid that got a Schwinn let you try it the difference was obvious. Those bikes rode like Lincoln Continentals instead of the golf cart feel of those wonderful AMFs and Huffys. That was a loooooong time ago.

What a beauty. Thank you for the wonderful channel, Ms. Misc! Steve Lawrence is an example of a great voice who had to compete with a transcendent singer. If Frank Sinatra hadn't have been on the same planet, Steven Lawrence would have been an all-time legend. His rendition of Misty is remarkable but if you then listen Sinatra's version you almost instantly say "oh, I get it."

Wonderful recordings! Thanks for posting! I remember listening to radio station KFOG in San Francisco during that time and they played SRP music too! By the way, here's a listing of the artists and music titles that you recorded from KBIG-FM. SRP had the best quality recording and they also required those stations to keep their radio transmissions to the utmost performance. "Embraceable You" - David Rose (KBIG Aircheck/Delta Airlines/Time & Weather) "Lover" - Manuel "Hopelessly Devoted to You" - Ferrante & Teicher "The Twelfth of Never" - Mike Sammes Singers "Weekend in New England" - Frank Chacksfield (KBIG Aircheck/Western Airlines) "Honey" - Paul Mauriat "If I Only Had Time" - Johnny Mann Singers "Help Me Make It in the Night" - Percy Faith Orchestra I also formatted our streaming music station KOZEY Radio to play hundreds of these beautiful music selections with tender loving care. Many of the phonograph albums are out-of-print. So if you like to hear more of these selections as well as some easy listening vocals from the 50's through the 80's, please check it out... thebreez.com/listen-now-to-kozey-radio/

54:00 Day They Drove Old Dixie Down, Anita Kerr Strings (Susquehanna) project. These were rejected by Shulkie but used extensively by TM Communications and B’ville and were exclusive for radio and like most of the custom libraries they were destroyed or so we think. We’ve never found her masters. We have most of her catalog of custom tracks but harvested from non-masters sources. We do have her original license agreements which is an interesting piece of Beautiful Music history. Some have remained those of us committed to its survival maintain archives, we have since the 1990s. Other KRUZ air-checks here represent TM Communications (Tom Merriman) which were IBMA (international Beautiful Music Association) investors like Kalamusic and WGAY radio, however at 1:00 Just The Way You Are is by Norm Geller an FM100 exclusive later used by Bonneville Broadcast Consultants which may suggest KRUZ at this date was rolling B’Ville. Stations frequently cycled syndication during these years with minimum contract length commitments, however some research in this area with Shulkie and SRP will yield some rather contentious legal battles cutting loose from contracts early. Wonderful air-checks and my thanks for preserving these.

My friend Doug, God rest his soul passed in 2022 was a huge fan of the choral arrangements and he would tell us all from memory. Many of these were exclusive recordings for broadcast only and this treasure from KBIG where Doug worked as a director and syndicated by SRP “All Music, All The Time” at the time of this air-check was the absolute gold standard of beautiful music radio. When Shulkie gave it up to Cox in 1982 its pristine state was lost forever, B’Ville bought the format from Cox 1983 and what survived the burning’s and scorched earth policy of Shulkie’s rage was added to Bonneville. None of the exclusive materials were ever intended for anything except radio airplay which in turn created a very hostile environment for any kind of survival; once its useful life was lost it was destroyed to prevent competitors from using it. A competitive and legal environment ensued the went all the way down to the station owners. No one dared copy, distributed, nor saved any of these materials for fear of legal repercussions and they were summarily dealt with too when any form of infringement occurred. Sadly now half a century later we cherish and adore this incredible art we as a society fostered and produced and we may never ever hear it again, these air-checks are such a powerful gift and a glimpse into who we were and sound we lost. What sells now will no longer be viable in 30 years just the same as beautiful music radio was in the 80s, yet despite losing appeal in the 20’s with todays youth we can still buy rock and pop music because it was allowed to be bought and saved by many insuring its survival something this exclusive stuff never had. Gone forever. Some of it survived and, of course the made public material has such as Surrey House which is the B’Ville catalog mostly contemporary materials and the commercial components like Percy Faith, 101 Strings, etc but the Phil Stout programming of SRP is lost to time. One would hope the BBC has kept safety copies in the UK of the SRP exclusive materials, a portion of the SRP catalog in 1979 but knowing Shulkie and how he conducted business it’s highly unlikely.
