Why is the defense of Little Round Top significant? If it had not been prominently featured in the film "The Killer Angels" it would just be an interesting part of the tour at the battlefield. It was neither the main objective nor the scene of the most critical fighting on the second day of the battle. The main objectives were Culp's Hill and Cemetery Ridge. Little Round Top is a part of Cemetery Ridge but it was not the scene of the main thrust. The main assault was directed at the Peach Orchard which first progressed over the Wheat Field, Devil's Den and Plumb Run Valley. The situation there was so dire that the hill was almost completely ignored. It was tactically significant for the Army of the Potomac's flank. Though, even Culp's Hill saw so much intense fighting that Southern units had briefly pushed all Northern units off of it. The loss of Culp's Hill would have been extremely catastrophic since it overlooked the main supply line of the Army of the Potomac on the Baltimore Turnpike. This is also why it was the primary objective of the day. To sum up Little Round Top was just as important as anywhere else on Cemetery Ridge, but it does not overshadow other the areas of the battlefield which were far more significant. I certainly don't think that it itself was the turning point of either the war or the battle. The South's failure to either take Culp's Hill or anywhere on Cemetery Ridge could be considered the turning point of the battle.
