    Modern historians say they don't know how these guys fought. What's a phalanx? If that's the case how do we know their training?

      It's a body of heavily armed infantry in ancient Greece formed in close deep ranks and files;

      Specific to ancient Greece. Relied on the shields interlocking and on the use of the long spear.

      @Legacies-of-Greatness lol so location? the Saxon at Hastings also locked shields and had long spears. So again what's a phalanx?

      The word was first used by the Greeks and meant literally "log". Others used shield formations but used different terms.
