Should I remove Tomato Leaves?
Tomato Care Tips: Pruning and Leaf Removal for Bountiful Harvest Greenhouse Gardening
Join us in the greenhouse for a crucial tomato maintenance session! In this informative video, we guide you through the process of pruning tomato plants to ensure a prolific harvest. It's August here in the UK, a bit late for this task, but we're still optimising our tomato plants for the best results. Our towering 9-foot tall tomato plants (2.7 meters for European viewers) need some attention.
Learn why it's essential to trim the tops of tomato plants to redirect their energy towards fruit production instead of excessive growth. We make some bold decisions, even cutting off trusses to give other parts of the plant a better chance at ripening in our climate before autumn arrives.
Stay tuned as we demonstrate the art of removing lower leaves from the tomato plants. This serves a dual purpose: improving sunlight exposure to developing tomatoes and enhancing air circulation to prevent tomato blight. Witness the transformation as we delicately trim leaves, allowing the vibrant green vines to shine.
We'll walk you through the process step by step, all while sharing insights into our gardening philosophy. Discover when to remove side shoots and why some foliage is left intact. As the first tomatoes of the season start to ripen, we take a moment to relish the rewards of our efforts.
Don't miss out on these valuable tomato care techniques! Whether you're an experienced gardener or just starting, our tips and tricks will help you achieve a thriving tomato harvest. Remember to like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell to stay updated on all things gardening. Happy growing!

    May I know if the stain will sip through to the other side of the fence which my neighbor owns?

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching and in answer to your question it all depends on the quality and style of fence. My fence has vertical slats so any runs ran down my side of the fence and not through it. If it is a poorer quality fence where the slats run horizontally then there is a danger the stain can run on the other side. I hope this helps 😊

    I'm thinking of staining my fence that same stain color. Would spraying it work as well as the brush??

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection 3 місяці тому

      Personally I always prefer to use a brush. I feel you have more control with a brush. When spraying anything I always worry about overspray and all the need to mask off what you don’t want spraying. All the cleaning down of equipment after just feels like too much hassle for me. It is though personal taste. Just be aware to ensure the colour does not run to your neighbours side of the fence. I hope this helps and thanks for watching 😊

    Very helpful. What do you do if you want to mount it directly onto tiles with screws into the tiles but the teresse isn't level? How do you then level it before screwing it to the tiles?

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection 4 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching. In answer to your question there are only two options. One is to re lay the paving level. Or you can pack the base to make it level with packers. It all depends how far out of level the paving is. A slight fall in level is not necessarily a bad thing. I hope this helps and good luck with the project.

    I'm still nervous about doing the fence in black. I have about 15 panels to do as my garden is wide,however it's shallow...i am worried that the black will make it look more shallow. I also will have a corner cabin to paint and a wooden arch...any suggestions please? I have wondered about Cuprinol Silver Copse which is a dark grey on the fence...but im still so on the fence (lol) that im not getting anything done...my garden is at starting point and bare...all the hard landscaping is done however.

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection Рік тому

      I do understand your dilemma and the time spent thinking about it! Firstly it is all down to personal taste so it’s really hard to give advice on individual projects. however the following points might help with the decision. - if you are thinking of a dark grey as an alternative there will not be much between that and black as far as the effect is concerned! Personally I think black is better! - from my experience when I had the new timber fence it really stood out (too light)and as soon as I have stained it black I hardly ever notice it. - The garden if it is new might look a little stark at first until you get some plants in it. Green foliage against the black works really well. - many top garden designers use black as a background colour for a reason. If it’s good enough for them it should work in your garden. - I too stained about 15 panels in my own garden and still love it. - black is a timeless colour so it does not date like a grey or similar colour might. -if the panels are new and can easily be replaced you could test the effect by painting one first. If you don’t like it it is easier and less expensive to change one rather than 15! - with regards to the cabin and arch I think I would keep the same colour. It is tempting to use another colour as a contrast but personally I think limiting the colour palette makes the finish look more classy. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 😊

    Hello, I have just come across your video. I moved into a new house last year and already painted the fence from turquoise to black, it looked better but the colour is starting to fade / is patchy in some areas. I have just purchased a new gate which needs painted and I had read somewhere about stain rather than paint. If I stain the gate, I would like to redo the fence. Do you think it's possible to stain on top of the previously painted fences? Many thanks, Gillian

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection Рік тому

      Hi Gillian, firstly thanks for watching. It’s a difficult question to answer really and it all depends on what the previous owners used. If it covered last time then I would try the same again. After time stain and paint do fade so you do need to keep re applying. With regards to the gate. Personally I would look to stain it. I am no professional decorator but my reasoning would be that you could alway paint over it if it does not look right or work. However you can’t easily go the other way. Also if the gate looks slightly different than the fence, personally this would not cause me any issues. So long as the colours look good together a slight contrast in finishes is not the end of the world! I hope this helps 😊

    Your garden is beautiful. I grew up in Basildon, Essex but left in 1979. We just bought a house in Wisconsin three years ago and the back yard was practically a clean slate. Sadly we have pretty bad clay soil that doesn't drain well so I've spent last year and this spring double digging and adding compost to improve it. I've been busy planting Lime light hydrangeas along my 6ft privacy fence and after watching your video on painting your fence black, I have decided that I'm going to paint ours a very dark brown. @@SpencerCollection It's amazing just how rewarding a garden can be. Looking, learning, experiencing, experimenting. And I'm learning (at last) to see it as an evolving process! Ours is coming along albeit on a much smaller scale. Bought the black stain (from your vid) and just waiting for the rain to stop before getting stuck into the fence! Thanks again Mark. Subscribed
