      We use a small line with a weight tied to it called an aborist "throwline". It's pretty cool and we get it up there two different ways: throwing it by hand (think basked toss) or using an industry specific slingshot...search "arborist slingshot" and you'll get a chuckle out of how simple & fun it is.

    Working in a dense urban environment I barely see mistletoe. I wonder how / if urban trees have an advantage over mistletoe. Any thoughts/data? We do have plenty of government surveillance (birds)

    • @thetreeist
      @thetreeist 11 місяців тому

      That's an excellent observation, we'll have to keep an eye out in the more urban areas we serve. An initial thought is that urban trees are likely experiencing more stress than trees in a rural(ish) environment so they should me MORE susceptible to mistletoe...?

    28:37 i might be wrong about this, but I understand that the roots need oxygen to be able to take water. Saturated/waterlogged soils don’t provide enough oxygen for roots to function and there stopping water uptake to the canopy. ❤❤❤ great talk, informed me a bit more about hypoxylon

  • @ongridself-reliantfamily1751

    As am amateur tree climber, and a hunter, I really appreciate this. When I am in a tree stand, I use my tree saddle and a Unicender in SRT. I find it doesn't get in the way while climbing the ladder, and is easy to keep in the descent mode while walking down the ladder. I have a paracord pre-set in the tree above the tree stand to make it easy to set my climb line before I go up into the tree stand. Awesome to see a real arborist work out how to rescue a hunter like this. I hope lots of people see this. I know a lot of arborists rescue cats and drones on the side. Hopefully this will prove useful for people who want to help out a stuck hunter. Great timing with most states hunting seasons coming up soon. Thanks so much!

    Very cool! Hey, can you direct me to where to get a decent ascending kit? I am just starting out and am looking at the less expensive options, but I am not sure how cheap is too cheap and also if it is worth it to just get the best kit or is the second best also just as good? I am just wanting to do some arbourist work on the side for now and see how it goes.

    • @thetreeist
      @thetreeist Рік тому

      Thanks for tuning in! I'm not aware of any 2nd best ascending kits pricing wise - they're all too damn expensive if you ask me. That said most folks pick up a foot ascender first. I recommend a CT Right Foot Ascender (the orange one). All other foot ascenders on the market slip out or require finicky stances & adjustments. After a few weeks/months on that folks typically add what we call a floating knee ascender from Climbing Technology - this is called a S.A.K.A. & is widely considered the best knee ascender on the market. All knee ascenders are pricey but the S.A.K.A. is worth it. If you can't afford it at first I'd simply do without a knee ascender until you're ready to purchase the S.A.K.A. Finally you'll want to get or make some sort of neck tether to tend your system (I made the one I use in the video). If you ever find yourself near Chapel Hill, NC let me know and I'll be happy to show you some tips & tricks in person. I hope this helps!

    Is there any way you could show more of the way you got to your limb position at 0:58? I really struggle with that kind of limb walking where the limb is at a steep angle, but not vertical. Even with spikes on a removal, I fight the flipline because of the angle, and my tie in point is pulling me off the limb. And without spikes, I can't seem to figure it out at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @thetreeist
      @thetreeist Рік тому

      Julius jumped out there and put his lanyard on immediately. Once he had his lanyard around the limb he sat on top of the limb and scooched his way into position. You'll hear folks refer to this as the cougar position or cougar cut. I'll look for opportunities to demo this in a future skills video! Thanks for the ask.

  • @ongridself-reliantfamily1751

    Great video. I love the basal anchor on MRS. Is there a name for that combination of a hybrid system: MRS, but base tied? I really like the idea that with a system like this you could have a lowerable base anchor, and the advantages of MRS in the canopy. Thanks so much.

    • @cesspool1676

      Thanks again for the kind words. I use this system to A.) teach new climbers so I can easily lower them if they are uncomfortable at height and freeze up & B.) this system allows for me (and other folks) to climb with sandals/barefoot due to the lack of need of ascenders while still having a 2:1 mechanical advantage of only needing to lift 1/2 your weight.

    • @thetreeist
      @thetreeist Рік тому

      Well said. SRS (ascending a stationary rope) using ascenders is far superior for a quick ascent...but I haven't been able to figure out how to do it comfortably barefoot or with sandals :)

    • @cesspool1676
      @cesspool1676 Рік тому

      @thetreeist I see your dilemma, a foot ascender is extremely uncomfortable barefoot. You could use a hand ascender or knee ascender with a modified foot loop for comfort. You could even pair the 2 together for a rope walker like set-up. Either way, body humping is great exercise.

    • @thetreeist
      @thetreeist Рік тому

      Thanks for the kind words & awesome to hear you're getting into climbing! The harness I'm wearing is considered a premium harness that comes with a premium price. It is a Monkey Beaver 2.0 harness that runs close to $700. They were kind enough to make it in a custom pink colorway for me. I fit most comfortably in a size Small (which may sound odd to some folks). I'm 6'1" & weigh 175 lbs. I've had the opportunity to climb in many different harnesses and have realized that the distance between your hip bones is key to sizing (not your weight or how much stomach you have). All of that said, I also really like how the much more affordable Petzl Sequoia (non srt model) harness fits as well. Let me know if you have any questions - We at The Treeist are not tied to nor funded by a gear supplier - you'll always get a honest answer from us. If you're dabbling, I'd go with the less expensive harness, If you're sufficiently addicted to the sport of climbing...go all out :)

    Middle-Aged? How old is that? I'm bumping 70 and still climbing, pruning, chunking, and felling.

      lol. Love your style! Awesome to hear you're still putting in the work - we're planning on making it happen when we're pushing 80!

    Wow! Exactly what I needed to learn. Would have liked a little more on the two-handed between-the-legs throwing technique.

    This has to be hands-down the best instructional video on UA-cam for SRT Ascending. Professionally filmed and edited, no extended intro, no bs - just great content. Thank you! Jolly good show mate!

    Excellent video. I have used a Wrist Rocket sling shot, egg shaped, lead fishing weights. I would suggest painting the weights a bright color. Easier to see among the branches, and find in the grass if you have to cut the line. The line and weights are cheap, in case you lose some.

      Thanks for the kind words & the tips! Folks certainly do not have to shell out the bucks for fancy arborist specific gear...some have even used deep sockets tied to masonry line.
