Dr. Cremers describes the how Gerd and LGR can potentially exacerbate and even cause dry eye disease and meibomian gland dysfunction through the connection of the throat to the eye via the nasolacrimal duct and the presence of pepsin (which is usually in the stomach) in tears: this can theoretically cause irritation and inflammation on the ocular surface.

Dr. Cremers’s patient talks about how IPL (intense pulse light) resolved a stubborn chalazion that would not go away after 4 weeks of warm compresses. IPL seems to save the meibomian gland and be an alternative to standard surgical excision which destroys the gland.
