    Well, repairs have been competed. As I suspected right from the start it was a failed o-ring - actually on the dummy plug on the passenger side. He only changed the one rather than upgrading them all to the new style. I do trust the guy so assume it was all that was required. Total cost was $1500 - I was afraid it would be more. He did do a good bit of troubleshooting and changed the oil filter and bad cap - and installed that top fuel filter! It started right up this morning after sitting overnight so I'm hoping my long crank problems are solved. Time will tell... Also I noticed on one you videos where you were talking about the Torque app that you had a high oil-water temperature differential. Ours is good but I was wondering if the flush solved the problem? You did seem to have lots of problems with your 6.0. Other than the long crank - which was more of an inconvenience - ours runs great. And I sure hope it continues especially this winter in the middle of Mexico. Good luck with your new build and thanks for the feedback. Mike

    • @markgraves7972
      @markgraves7972 2 роки тому

      Thats awsome!! I wish he would have done the stand pipes and dummy plugs on both sides, but not a big deal, I think the parts were like $80 for everything. the money is in the labour and knowlage, You should be good to go for a long time, always use ford parts on this thing, really good oil, change regularly, and a rad flush and refill with the proper fluid from ford is best because the engine does get hot normally, crappy oil and coolant will fail. you will be fine this winter. and yes I used the tourque app all the time just to monitor things on the go and to have the err code reader on hand :)

    A bit of an update... The place is called Moxley Automotive in Peterborough - we live in Bobcaygeon about 45 minutes away. He is an ex-Ford diesel mechanic with 20 years experience and has worked on the E450. He knows all about DieselTechRon - another good sign. They have it in the shop now and are starting to look for the problem. He was concerned about the oil filter cap for some reason. He said it was after market and did not fit as it should. He replaced it without any effect. I was in yesterday and hs showed the pressure test - a lot of air was was definitely getting through somewhere. And he said the oil was not up to the top when he took the pressure sensor out so I'm sure the disassembly will continue. I just told them to do what you have to and I am confident they will get it fixed. I'll keep you posted...Mike

    Mark - I found a place in Peterborough that sounds very knowledgeable. I was immediately obvious that he knew about the logistical issues of the 6 in the E450. I am taking it in next week for a look see. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks Mike.

      that is very cool you found someone with knowledge!!! so happy for you. Im sure you have a sticky injector or two with the rough starts, Im not sure about the stalling issue... maybe the FICM needs to be re soldered (A couple components inside have know bad solder joints and can cause a low voltage issues controlling the injectors) Best is to let this guy hook it up to the scan tool and see whats going on. these engines actually have lots of sensors that tell you tons, but non of that info goes to the gauge cluster, go figure. Also look up getting a ODB2 conector and a tablet that way you can have real time engine data in the cab as you are driving. I did it and it was awsome to have the info, you can also get err codes from the computer as you are driving too. Diesel tech Ron did a great video on it and lets you know what things you want to look at :) Happy 6.0L'ing lol Mark

      @@markgraves7972 I do use Torque Pro on an Android tablet and actually even record some of the data to my onboard data system running on a Raspberry Pi - generally useless of course but... I too like to watch the data while I'm driving along! I will look up the that video from Ron and check it out. I have never had any error codes so maybe that it a good sign. FICM voltage is good. Water/oil temperature differential is good. I just need to be confident that it will not be a problem in the middle of Mexico! Last winter I was a mess for the first month always wondering if the thing would start - not an ideal way to spend your vacation. Anyway, appreciate the support and ideas. I will let you know how it works out..... Mike

    Mark, I am becoming a little concerned with the motorhome. The long crank I understand and can live with - it really hasn't gotten much worse but I also experience a situation where the motor immediately dies when it starts sometimes. This has happens from time to time when cold and it usually starts after 2 or 3 tries. This morning it was more like 4 or 5 and I had to use the battery combiner and keep it cranking. It runs very rough for a couple of seconds and then seems fine. I know that you have direct experience with this setup and trust you know what you are talking about. Any idea if this is a critical issue? I do not want to have a no start situation in Mexico this winter! Any ideas appreciated. I plan to start it every morning for a bit to see how it goes. It does always start but I just worry that one day it won't..... Thanks. MIke.

  • @ramsaymike

    Mark, still looking for a place to change the top fuel filter and - maybe - the dummy plugs+. The local Ford dealer said it was no problem on the standard E450 if you just take the doghouse off. He thought that the motorhome could be different somehow so couldn't say? He also they could change the dummy plugs without lowering the motor. I know you have done both so wonder if you could comment. I don't really think these guys know... Any idea of a good shops? Thanks for your help.

    • @markgraves7972
      @markgraves7972 2 роки тому

      ford should be able to do the top fuel filter no problem, lol I can do in like 2 hours taking my time. The dummy plugs and stand pipesare a different beast, the drivers side valve cover will come off no problem from the back once you take the dog house off. I also took out the seats just to give more working room :) the passenger side valve cover is another story, the motor mount on the drivers side must be removed so the engine can tilt that way to give the extra few millimeters of clearance to get the passenger valve cover off. As for shops, you need to be on the look out for 6.0L trucks and then chat with the owners to see where they get work done and interview the mechanic to see if they know what they are talking about. In my town I talked with a couple shops and decided that they would do more harm then good and had to do the work myself :( sorry bud, keep me posted on your progress :)

    • @ramsaymike
      @ramsaymike 2 роки тому

      @@markgraves7972 Thanks for the input. I think I can manage the fuel filter - your video helps no doubt - but the dummy plugs are too much for me. It seems OK for now and we will be heading back to Mexico so I sure hope so. The crank time when cold hasn't really increased in 20k which seems like a good sign and driveability is good. And I agree that it is not easy to find knowledgeable mechanics. I have not found any that I would trust in our little town. I'll let you know how it goes.....Mike

    Just ran into your channel searching for some info on how to change the top fuel filter on an E450 RV. We have a 2007 Coachmen Concord DS275 with 6.0 diesel motor which we bought in 2020 to take to Mexico for a 3 month caravan trip which thanks to covid was delayed until Jan 22. It was a great trip - 17000 km all told. We are from Bobcaygeon Ontario. Before we left the US we went to A Ford dealer in Texas to get an oil and fuel filter change. They did not know how to get the top filter off! They just gave up after 3 guys worked on it for an hour!!! Anyway, the old Ford ran just fine the whole way. It does have a long crank (~5-6 seconds) when cold which I understand is a probably standpipe or dummy plug O-ring issue but due to the cost to fix I think I can live with it. Thanks for the tip on the fuel filter.

    • @markgraves7972
      @markgraves7972 2 роки тому

      Very cool trip!!! thank you for watching :) I did the standpipe and dummy plug job on mine, only like $100 for the parts, but lots of work to replace :( Diesel tech Ron, on youtube has tons of great infor for you to check out. I would do the upgrade on the standpipe and dummy plugs, as mine got worse and worse to the point where I had to wait an hour for the oil to cool down enough to be thick enough to build enough pressure to open the injectors. once I changed them and inspected the oring was almost split in half and ready to clog something or take out the IPR valve. Once I started to learn more about the fail points of this engine I had to sell :( we did 25000km in 3 years and countless repairs, sadly I had enough

      @@markgraves7972 I was aware of the long list of issues with the 6.0 but the unit was such a good fit that I decided to take a chance. It really hasn't changed in 20k so I'll probably just hold off - and it sure isn't something I would attempt on my own. Keeping the batteries fully charged keeps cranking speed up which helps some. But I suspect that it really is only a matter of time... Diesel tech Ron was a great asset and left some great stuff no doubt. Good luck on your latest project.

    My upper filter is leaking after a new alternator install. I wonder if the two are related or if the fuel filter was just a coincidence and just needed replaced at the same time. Great video! I read that fuel filter bowl drain valve "O" rings and/or drain valve can sometimes leak. Or maybe the cap isn't snug/tight enough. My 1999 E450 leaks about 1/2 cup after I turn off engine. Maybe dirty filter increases pressure so fuel finds a way to leak from weak point. I think filters need to be changed every 5000 or 10,000 miles (someone said after 2 oil change), depending on situation. Did you ever fix your leak?

    Did you have to move the oil filler neck? Mine is directly above the fuel filter cap, I could probably get it off but I doubt there is enough room to remove the old filter and get the new one in

      what year is yours? I did not have to remove the oil filler neck, only time I had to do that was to change an injector and also when I did stand pipes and dummy plugs :)

    Hi Mark I have a 2004 FG, looks exactly same, that will likely need this work. Could you PM me the parts list? I'm collecting, I won't be starting on the truck till this spring/summer and build the box next fall/winter. I'm in central Ontario.

    Bought a new one in 1993. Never have had a problem. Sure beat all the other trucks that I have owned as often they had down time and spent time in the shop. But not this one. Just routine LOF's. Best truck in my opinion. I did replace 2 backup lamps for .70 cents. I'm sure the truck will outlive me. I must be one of the lucky ones that got a good one. It's been loaded down with construction tools since the beginning and also has pulled the Bobcat/hoe attachment/buckets. Recently I added some over the spring helper springs (front), 2 on each side, as the camber has flattened due to age. Now the front frame rides 1 inch above the front axle and rides better. Cost:$64.00 USD. When the warranty was up back in 96, a mechanic installed a Mitchell overdrive so I could split my gears (in 2wd only) or in 4wd low if the hubs are turned out. Top speed went from 72mph to 82mph. Best mileage: 17.9 miles to the gallon (10,500lbs truck/bed/tools). Top speed in low range, 5th gear, in overdrive is about 40mph. Great little investment in a truck that has 135hp/250lbs torque. I know the newer trucks have somewhere around 160/360. Best truck that I have owned. Have had 8 PU's of different makes. Gas, diesels. But the only one that ever came close was my 93 Cummins. But engine only. Have a great time rejuvenating your new rig!

      @@markgraves7972 In case you are interested, here are a couple of links. This company has the replacement wheels and replacement front springs for those building an Earth Cruiser. Good folks. I almost got new front springs from them, as I mentioned the camber had gone out of mine. Instead, I did the 2 pairs of over the leaf helpers. I had to grind a little angle on a couple of them to get them to fit perfect. One spring in front of the axle and one behind the axle. Ride is much much better. But obviously the replacement springs are superior but 70 bucks vs. 1300 bucks is a big difference. As I am now retired, I only use the truck for hauling firewood, hay and occasional lumber for a home building project. www.fusooffroad.com/fuso-leaf-spring-suspension-systems/ www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/rideeffex/accessories/truck--towing---jeep/trailer---towing/trailer-accessories/spring-helpers---shock-extenders/b3ec48504439/superior-rideeffex-leaf-spring-helper/spr4/111035 On a side note, when I was down in Australia, they have the Fuso's with a 6 cylinder. I would like to have had one of those when I was pulling the machinery around! Have fun!

      Hi @vernonpeterson4021 I have recently purchased a 95 FUSO Canter FG. It’s a JDM vehicle brought into the states in 2022. You mention a Mitchell overdrive you had installed on your truck. Looking them up, the company I found manufactures overdrives for antique ford vehicles. Is this the outfit you used for the OD in your truck? It sounds like you have gotten very good usage out of your FG. It gives me hope that mine with 7k (800 hours) will serve me well. Thanks

      I would not import, there is north American models from the factory, they are rare but are here. You just have to wait for one to go up for sale. Insurance company is saying mine is imported and charging me a small fortune for insurance. I am in the middle of contacting Mitsubishi to prove its not an import :(
