Cheap DIY garden table from stud timber
Lumber is very expensive at the moment, but outdoor furniture is even more expensive. After shopping around we could not find a decent set of outdoor table and chairs for less than £200. All the in budget ones we found were horribly cheap, not sturdy and/or quite unattractive visually. I wanted to make something that could comfortably sit six people and hopefully last several years.
Lumber itself is very expensive at the moment but CLS studs are mass-produced and used in construction. This means they are fairly cheap and you at least know what you're buying is planed straight and to a certain standard so I tried using them. Exterior pressure-treated wood would have been better but costs much more (at least where I was looking). Hopefully using a durable high quality stain, keeping it covered when not in use, and using feet to keep the wood away from the floor itself will make sure it lasts a long time.
Total cost around £170. Studs can be brought cheaper wholesale but I just went to the local hardware shop. I already had fixings and exterior paint. Prices of the stuff I bought in video.

How to: Cheap and Easy Outdoor Pull-up Bar with Scaffolding | DIY Pull-up Bar
Переглядів 32 тис.4 роки тому
How to build a DIY stable and tall free-standing pull-up bar using 33.7 mm scaffolding for less than £150. Height between 2.05 m and 2.35 m - no more squeezing into door frames with bent legs to do pull-ups from home.
How high is the pull up bar and do you have a list of all materials required? I'm 188cm and want something I can hang from without having my knees bent
Hiya, list is in the video. You can adjust the height from 205-235cm tall. I am 184cm myself and could hang with feet off floor (tip toes and scapula not engaged would touch floor) no problem, and bar was not set near maximum height
Sorry I completely skipped over that part. We're did you source the parts?
@@JamesNeal-c2g I got these from themetalstore.co.uk, 33mm diameter bars and associated clamps. Some of the clamps are also sold on amazon (they're popular for making external hand rails and holds, eg in elderly homes) so check there too for good prices
what was the added parts in the bottom corners that you mentioned you was adding for more side to side stability @@jameshowsam
@@JamesNeal-c2g same supplier, just shorter braces across the corners. A 20cm pipe with an Adjustable Tee (30-60 degrees) interclamp on each end.
Thanks for the video.
Great build, thanks for the inspiration, this is just what I have been looking for.
Is it foldable and adjustable? I was considering buying one that looks like this but it's adjustable however I can't really justify the price. If I can't find a way to build it soon I will definitely buy it anyway
It doesn't fold no, you have to unscrew it with a hex key to pack it away

How much roughly did it all cost in sterling? Very impressed, been thinking of building something myself and this looks like a good starting point
£150 all in, including the corner braces. Thus was mid lockdown mind so prices might have gone up a bit
I bought a kt stand from buy and sell for 70 Stirling yesterday. But I understand that making things for yourself is important on the journey of self reliance.
🧐🤔 I AM IMPRESSED 😳😱✅👌 I DID NOT THINK IT WOULD BE STURDY ENOUGH NOR TALL ENOUGH TO DO A MUSCLE-UP. IF IT CAN DO THAT THEN I AM SOLD! 😅 AWESOME 💪🏽
😁😁
Wow, thank you so much! I have been looking for something like this for ages now!! Couple of questions, where did you get the scaffold from? Does the A frame get in the way of certain exercises (like the windscreen wipers)? Do you think you could paint it green so it blends in to the garden?
Got the scaffolds bars from www.themetalstore.co.uk/ Doesn't get in the way when I do wipers because I like to curl my hips up for more tension, this puts my torso at an angle. but if you hung straight down with your torso perpendicular to the ground it would yeah. Could pait green for sure, just do a layer of primer first since it's bare metal.
@@leistus9624 Awesome, thanks!
Just make it wider if think legs might hit sides
did you ever end up adding those angles supports? and did it improve the stability? this is a really great video thanks for making it!
I did yeah and they completely stabilised it
@@jameshowsamcan you show video?
@electric45 afraid not sorry, I've sold the whole thing now I've moved to a house with a smaller garden
disagree with "ugly", nice work!!
Dude, this is great 👍
i worder it is strong enough to do muscle up?
Yes, I do some in the video and have done many since building it. More than strong enough especially after the extra reinforcements
Nice mi Homie
Good job mate, I made something similar using the regular 48.3mm tube but think you can even get reducing key clamps now to combine with the width you're using here. The sideways wobble did irritate me though so another idea or as well as corner supports you can tension up with either wire cable or heavy duty webbing to some form of ground anchors.
Where do u buy the joint?
Same website as the bars: themetalstore.co.uk was where I bought mine
How tall are you? I just wanted to know for perspective
6ft1
@@jameshowsam thanks!!
😂 thats unstable as fuck
Love the video bro but I thought this was cheap xD £131 definitely isn't. My bad
What were you expecting £20
Cheaper than the alternative. You can buy one with all the parts for around £300 that is adjustable. Maybe it's worth it to save hassle but maybe it isn't.
Thanks for this! Looks like scaffolding in North America is a bit different. Could you please post the link to where you got the parts?
www.themetalstore.co.uk/products/galvanised-tube-size-b-33-7-mm :)
@@jameshowsam thank you!
Igor, did you find North American parts? where?
My height is 5 feet n 8 inch is it possible to reach for the bar?
6 ft 8 inch is the lowest it will go. So as long as your arms are longer than a foot above your head you'll be fine
@@jameshowsam hahaha ;) yes they are!
Is it strong enough can we do 360s on this setup.? I weigh 60 kg how much load this can take if I want to do weighted pullups
I weighed 110kg at the time of filming then spent the rest of lockdown stuffing my face and it was still completely sturdy if that helps :)
@@jameshowsam thankyou sm sir for your kind reply. This has helped a lot❤️
Been thinking about doing something like this.... looks great!
This definitely looks better than those wooden ones. But will it support up to 200lbs of weight?
I was 210 at the time of filming and then kept on eating like a pig through the rest of lockdown so I'd say there's some good leeway there ;)
So, everybody is skipping past how easily he did windshield wipers???
Haha I love em. Best oblique exercise out there
hey do u know if i can substitue out the acute angle joints for another swivel joint
Hi Rory, yeah probably. Main reason I like this specific one though is that you can set the angle then 'fix' it for extra rigidity. I don't think there's much lateral stress on that particular joint if the angle is strongly acute but every little helps when you're trying to get it as strong as possible.
Do you think this can handle hanging gymnastics rings?
Haven't tried it, it's stable but maybe not stable enough for some of the jazzier stuff!
This looks great! Did you think about a way to make it foldable?
I didn't but that's a great idea. I guess if you swapped the acute angle at the top for a swivel joint then you could food it flat by just loosening two bolts at the crossbeams
This is great, looking at making this as well. Did you order from the metal store? and could you help me with what I need for the addition corner supports, please. Thanks.
Yeah I ordered 1m cut into 4x25cm along with 8 adjustable t clamps. Amazon sell the t clamps is metal store doesn't have them: www.amazon.co.uk/Key-Clamp-Adjustable-34mm-129-B34/dp/B00W3J1PA0
@@jameshowsam Thanks a lot, greatly appreciated. If you switch to the brand Q clamp on themetalstore they have the adjustable tee in stock, if anybody else is wanting to do this too. Convenient to get it all in one place.
Great video wanted to try and start doing muscle ups for ages. What I've done thou is used an old swing (child swing) put some timber around the base. I need to spray it thou as its pink lmfao
That was the first thing I tried, just looking to buy a cheap swing set but couldn't find one that looked sturdy enough without being way too expensive and couldn't find any used ones nearby
Hi mate, great video, how tall did it end being?
Thanks, 220 cm at the mo, perfect for me. Can go to just over 230
