Para-Phernalia Emergency Parachutes | Wedge Softie
today, we’re taking a closer look at Para-Phernalia’s Wedge Softie parachute. If you're a pilot or aviation enthusiast, you know the importance of having reliable safety gear. The Wedge Softie is an excellent option for comfort and safety during flight, whether you're in a sailplane, glider, or small aircraft.
The Wedge Softie is a wedge-shaped parachute, a variation of the popular Mini and Micro Softie. It’s packed heavier at the bottom, providing added support for your lower back. This parachute is perfect for pilots using upright seats or those with seats that push your shoulders forward. Available in two weight options - one for pilots weighing up to 180 lbs and another for those up to 240 lbs - the Wedge Softie ensures a comfortable, secure fit for a range of body types.
The Wedge Softie offers two harness options: the standard harness and the aerobatic harness. The standard harness, featured in this video, is designed for general comfort during regular flights. For aerobatic pilots or those engaging in high-G maneuvers, the aerobatic harness takes the pressure off your legs, relieving any discomfort caused by the harness digging in during intense maneuvers. Both harness types are easy to adjust and designed for optimal fit and comfort.
The Wedge Softie features standard B-12 buckles with a thread-through chest strap, ensuring a secure closure. However, if you need a faster release, Para-Phernalia also offers a quick ejector system, which allows for quick emergency deployment. Whether you're flying a sailplane, or a small aircraft, having an easy-to-use release system is essential in case of emergency.
One of the best features of the Wedge Softie is its customization options. You can choose from a wide range of fabric colors, including classic options like black, grey, and red, as well as more vibrant colors like orange, gold, and green. You can even customize the trim and harness webbing to match your style. The parachute featured here is customized in orange and royal blue, but you can pick whatever combination suits you best.
To explore the full color selection, check the website link below!
This parachute comes with several accessories that can be tailored to your needs. The first is the carry bag, which is available in stock colors like navy blue and black or can be specially ordered in custom colors, like the royal blue one featured here.
You can also add a personalized monogram to your parachute. You can fully customize this feature with your name, call sign, or any other text you choose.
Another great accessory is the detachable sweat pad. This piece helps protect your parachute from sweat and is removable for easy washing. It’s a simple yet effective way to keep your gear in top condition.
The Wedge Softie parachute is an excellent choice for pilots and aviation enthusiasts who prioritize both safety and comfort. If you’re interested in learning more about the Wedge Softie, check out the link below.

I took every class George Moffat taught at Pingry 1971-4. One of the best teachers there. George Died June 22, 2024 age 97. Larger than life. RIP George and thank you.
At 23, I was a competitor in the 1994 15-meter nationals. George was there too. One day we both left the start gate at the same time. We climbed up in the first thermal together on course. I decided to try and get ahead of him by taking a different course line, just to meet up 15 miles later in the same thermal, same altitude again. It went on like this the entire task until finishing at the same time. After landing I told my crew that I tried everything possible to get ahead of George but nothing worked. He was really good. At that moment Suzanne Moffat walked up to us and said, I need to tell you this because George won't. George said he flew with you most of the day today, tried everything he knew to get ahead, but nothing worked. He said, damn that kid is good. That was the best compliment anyone could get in soaring. Sean Franke
If your goal is to minimise the number of instruments on the panel, why not eliminate the ACD 57 and use the internal radio/transponder selection feature of the LxNav 9000 with both the com and transponder LxNav bridge(s)?
Hi, good question. The ACD57 is a certified instrument designed to integrate and display the transceiver and transponder. The primary function of the LX 9000 is navigation.
I did the same. Didn't pour water in the glider though 😂
Don't do this in just any glider. The water goes right out through the bottom.
@@wingswheels oh yeah I did mine in a Grob 103. The water would be less up the carpet and everything lol
Im going to my first contest this weekend
Nice, enjoy!
Would love to have one if i had the money
Around how much did it cost
A complete refinish runs about $30,000 to $35,000. Does not include new instruments.

Hi great video! How many labor hours took sanding sand gel coat removal?
Good question! Check out the last video in the series. Danny answers that question. ua-cam.com/video/xOXi2Y3060w/v-deo.html
Installed this on the fwd canopy gap on my LS3. Eliminated a very annoying whistle. My canopy cap has a drawstring and I just put it on loose. Works fine. On my third season with the original seal. Best regards.
Nice! Thanks for sharing.
Wow, that is absolutely gorgeous!!!
Danny did outstanding work. It's even more impressive when seeing it in front of you.
Putting seals on the wing is easy if prepared with knowledge and manual dexterity. Removing seals and seal adhesive residue is really difficult and very time consuming. Any advice regarding this task would be greatly appreciated
Watch our Plastic Razor Blade video. The video mentions Acetone. Rubbing alcohol can be used as a an alternative.
Hi Gents. A glider is not a car. You are not allowed to apply thick layers of Bondo on it. It is easy to apply new thin glasslayers and make it smooth but the empty mass of the glider increases, and the center of gravity goes backward. If you ask to do such a job assuring zero mass-increase NO sailplane refinisher will EVER give you a quote or touch your plane. If you get a quote with assured 2 kg's limited mass increase you have the best sailplane finisher in the world.
Bondo was not used or thick layers of any filler. A little weight was gained in the end, but not much. As we all do when getting older ;)
This was how i replaced my rudder combi tapes. The glue was 25 years gooped onto the vertical stabilizer. It simply wouldnt "come off" and the plastic razor (and loads of acetone) got the job done. I used the scraper to "roll" the rubberized adhesive to itself as it came off the surface.
Exactly!
so cost of doing this considering you say 900 hours at $120/hour plus instruments, paint, etc, maybe $150,000? For a 56 year old glider?
Inflation is high, but not $120/hr for a refinish...yet. It's like a new glider now at a cost of less than a 1/4 of a new 15/18 meter glider with almost 90% of the performance. However, being in the family for three generations of glider pilots, it's priceless.
Wow that turned out great!
Thank you for putting this series together, Sean. An awesome glider with a finish that can compliment its great history!
Thank you Danny for the outstanding results!
Wow, nice work there Danny!
Thank you!
Beautiful work. A friend had his AS-W20 refinished by Danny during the winter with the same results.
Why this background noise it is not necessary.
Dear Gods, i hope my eyes deceive me. Please tell me that you are not spraying isocyanate 2k paint without an externally air fed mask? Charcoal filters are simply not adequate. If your lungs get sensitised then you can kiss goodbye to lung function. I've personally treated a man who only spent two weeks as a paint sprayer and ended up on a lung transplant waiting list. This is really REALLY toxic stuff.
What's the price of this glider?. ... Love from India🇮🇳
That glider is not for sale but find a large list of glider classifieds here wingsandwheels.com/classifieds.html?cat=251%2C252&marketplace_status=published
Everything of theirs is very well thought out. My only thing I'd do differently (maybe it's an option?) is the power rigger should probably be powered by a LifePO4 so it doesn't drain much when resting. Otherwise it's a great setup.
Hello Sean, thank you for this video, but I do not agree with your way taping mylar. We tape the teflon only on the upper side, but on the wing and the rudder, for stopping the air. Mylar and the thin tape is 90% optic (we use it as well). On the bottom side we use only mylar. Gerhard, Germany
Hello Garhard, The sealing in this video was performed on a DG808C. Manufacturers instruction were followed, with the exception of Acetone. Many, including me believe Acetone is appropriate for limited use on sailplanes. We have two other examples of other types of sailplane sealing on our website ( wingsandwheels.com/mylar-gap-seal.html ) taken from other maintenance manuals. While the end goal is the same, installation methods vary depending on the glider make and model as specified by the manufacturer. Best regards, Wings & Wheels.
Encrivel muito complexo
Nice video Sean!
Im amazed all of that hardware for the electronics could fit behind the panel, my LS1f panel is jam packed on the back side with just a flarm, s80, radio, and mechanical altimeter, vario, and airspeed indicator
Hey, I know this glider when I flew out of Ionia, MI. I flew #98 (Kestrel 19M). Cool to see this restoration!
❤
Air Avionik stellt unausgegorene Geräte her, die dann nicht funktionieren, ich habe eines gekauft und war enttäuscht. Viele Versprechungen und dann funktioniert nichts. Seien Sie vorsichtig
So the panel is now worth as much as the glider?😁
You might think also: it costs money to fly latest instruments and then different money to fly latest glider. Luckily, you can fly latest instruments without money for latest glider, if you want. It is actually pretty enjoyable after getting over the mental hurdle that old glider must have crap instruments.
The LS3a is now like a new glider at a fraction of the price of a new sailplane. Yes, the performance is maybe 90% of a new sailplane, but 25% of the cost after all the improvements.
@@wingswheels I don't disagree with that. On the one hand, new gliders are ferociously expensive and, on the other, most of us aren't capable of getting the best out of what we already have. Our Ventus cT is more than good enough for me.
Good looking panel. Personally I'm down to just the one vario with HAWK. It has a backup vario on it with the TE probe. But if I loose power to the LX9050 then I have no vario at all. But the chances of that are pretty slim!
I bought an lxnav vario from Wings and Wheels. Could you kindly create a video on how to connect the vario to a cellphone a[[ like xcsoar. I setup the lxNav with the bluetooth, but my cell phone was not showing the bluetooth signal from the lxnav vario. Is there somethine I am doing wrong?
Great suggestion. We will work on that video!
Quite an improvement over the MK III.
How do you ensure that the profile on the wingtip stays the same?
I'm thinking that an elastic style canopy cover will mess it up. Will it??
Yes, do not use a canopy cap ( wingsandwheels.com/canopy-cap.html ) with a canopy V-Seal.
A truly labor intensive process, especially with a 6" block. I'm sure the results will be fantastic.
I wonder if he is finished yet ;)
Yes, it's finally done...the last video is from the test flight, out soon.
Gonna be the nicest LS3 in the USA lol
But no care in uploading a longer video showing it. 🤦♂️
Awesome to see successful pilots
Wow! That runway is almost as bumpy as TCSC! 😂
Just adds to the adventure 😉
