Did I sleep on a classic Dungeon Crawler? | A Xanadu Next Review
I went into this game with expectations through the floor and walked away pleasantly surprised. Xanadu Next deserves better than it got. Sure it has problems. We all do. I buy too many doodads. But I'm trying my best. However, when I dug into this simple and to the point dungeon crawler, I was shocked to find out not only does excel at what it does best... it left a lasting impression.

Astlibra Revision Review | The game that took one person 15 years to make
Переглядів 7 тис.8 місяців тому
Sure it looks ugly at a glance... but there's something special under all those stock jpegs. If you spend 15 years making your game, are you making the choice to be old school or accidentally stumbling into it? Either way, Astlibra provides a classic action RPG fare that you don't see a lot any more... but is it fun? Spoiler: Yes. It is. Games in the intro: Zanki Zero: Last Beginning Eternal Ri...

I miss so many fun games here in the United States, but that's okay! because fan translators are out there being amazing. Inspired by a social media photo of a game I'd never seen before I set out on a quest to play something new. I bet if I was making videos in 2019 this would have been a fun, timely review, but I wasn't so we're doing it today for some reason. Does this port of a 16 year old PSP game hold up? I think still to this day my order for grandia games is 2,1,3. 2 is very very cheesy but it's genuine. I love every character by the end and even though I found all the characters kinda annoying in a way at the beginning (except mareg) I loved them all by the end, kinda like FF13. It's dark but it's memorable. 1 is just a blast, a genuine blast. 3 dropped in the story department since the OG directors and writers was gone, different company. It also has the best combat for sure but also is the most grindy since square was involved. It's not terrible but definitely no where near the same level is 1 or 2. It does have the best combat tho. You are in combat more but it's more fun with air combos, chains, learning or upgrading moves mid battle in a cool quick cutscene. It's nice but the story just feels tooo basic whereas 1 and 2 was basic but endearing and used it to deliver complex themes. Overall great video. Love the grandia series. Some things I will say, yes the remaster did kinda mess up the audio balancing I don't remember it being a problem when I played it as a kid. And yes, millennia is best girl, first video game crush.

I want to tell you how much I appreciate your insightful closing comment about making the best of our choices during this age of overwhelming abundance. First world problem, but it can be exhausting to pick what game (or book or show or movie) to engage with, and as we get older the burden of limited time is hard to escape. Anyway cool list and I will certainly grab a few of these.

One interesting note, songs like "Canção do Povo" and "A Deus" have lyrics in Portuguese. While the lyrics is correct and even use more complicated structure as you would see in religious songs instead of everyday language it still have a heavy Japanese accent. Due to the combination of Portuguese and Japanese accents I never realized the song was actually in Portuguese until I saw the lyrics.

Funny how you made a joke about possibly mispronouncing Nidr's name and causing pain while constantly mispronouncing Setsuna. Not a dig, I just found it funny. And yes, it hurts a bit every time 😅 You're not a Japanese speaker (I presume) so the error is fine.

Took me ages to actually get to watching this, but wanted to because Radiant Historia is my favorite game of all time. I acknowledge it's far from perfect with some notable issues, but it just really spoke to me with its puzzle-like combat, general story tone, and lack of missables thanks to the time travel. I honestly prefer how the original ended over the remaster, as I felt like the game had a good tone of just doing what you can in one lifetime, even if it doesn't magically fix everything, especially with certain sidequests that have endings that show there's hope to fix the desertification. The remaster I'd really consider a sidegrade, as it improved on certain aspects like having your back party be able to do things in battle as well as the extra facial expressions, even if I prefer the original art (and I love the bedroom eyes Sonja gets when she's ready to upgrade Rosch's Gauntlet). That said, the story pacing I feel suffered a bit in the end even in perfect mode, with finishing the original final boss just going into Teo telling you "Hey, could you do better to fix the problem?" It's also the first time I can ever say that a piece of fanservice DLC broke the balance of the game in various respects. The use of Mana Crystals to restore your health/SP at save points was completely broken by just going to dip in the springs fully healing you INCLUDING the Mana Gauge, so it was not really a matter of conserving resources as you were going through dungeons/field sections, as every save point was a free full heal. That said, I think it's my favorite iteration of a fanservice DLC I've ever seen, since Stocke is just THE BEST RPG PROTAG OF ALL TIME and the DLC plays it super well for him, staying professional. Not only does it give you some extra dialogue between Stocke and every character, it doesn't follow basically any anime tropes for hot springs scenes: No girls yelling at him for peeping and slapping him, no embarrassment and stumbling over words, NONE OF IT. It's just Stocke being super chill with whomever he's bathing with and having a nice conversation. Radiant Historia might not be a perfect game, but it still stands as my favorite game that I'm always happy to return to. I may prefer the overall tone of the original, but the remaster adds some nice extra worldbuilding and character interactions (even if some of it is sadly locked behind the extinct eShop). I have not yet seen an RPG protagonist that appeals to me like Stocke does; he and Aht are the best characters in the game. Radiant Historia is a recommendation I'd give to anyone, regardless of which version they'd play.

I think my favourite thing about this game is that all the felpoolians are cat people with different ranges of catness. Apparently they're discriminatory towards people who are more catlike than others??? But i just think it's neat to not have the "humans" be 1-1

This game is one of my favorite of all time. I will say though I think the bad jokes and adult jokes falling flat is on purpose as a play at typical japanese tropes. Your character reacts the same way as you do pretty much. they don't care about them, they don't find them funny, and their lack of reaction kind of makes it awkward for those making the jokes too. Even in the thick of tropes your character doesn't really care about them, which is pretty refreshing to be honest. Even the raunchy chapter has a reason for existing that isn't there to be fan service, but something more sinister all along instead. It feels like those jokes are set up just to tear down and make fun of.
