CSX Mance Fall Spectacular 2024 - Farewell to the Amtrak Capitol Limited
CSX Mance Fall Spectacular 2024 - Farewell to the Amtrak Capitol Limited
This production is concentrated for the most part on just a very few miles at or near Mance, Pennsylvania... and limited to filming in just 2 months: September & October 2024 with a few "webcam" shots included from November 11 & 12, 2024 for historical purposes.
The idea behind this production was two-fold. 1. To document the change of the season... from late summer lush green, to the brilliant yellows, oranges, reds & maroons that overtake the high elevation at Mance for colors that are just not seen elsewhere so early in the fall color season. ... and 2. To document the very last runs of the Amtrak Capitol Limited passenger train which was replaced on November 12, 2024 with the "Floridian". While this may be temporary and the Capitol Limited will hopefully return, it could be quite some time before that occurs. The "superliner" equipment shown in this video dates from the early 1990's and has served for over 30 years so the "viewliner" replacements from the "Floridian" train set are very different indeed.
Almost all shots of the Capitol Limited where shot from milepost 204 to 210.. a distance of just 6 miles, but these are a very special 6 miles with unique and stunningly beautiful landscapes not found anywhere else on CSX, and indeed anywhere else in the world.
The Horseshoe Curve at Mance was constructed to gain elevation for the train in as short a distance as possible. This results in a very tight curve that in person can be "deafening" in terms of wheel flange squealing. The 'squealing' is included in this production at times to be accurate to what the trains actually sound like.
The Old Mance Post Office is in the process of being refurbished so that it can be preserved for future generations. The location is unique on the CSX being at near the apex of the Horseshoe curve at Mance.
For generations this location has been a highpoint of the Sand Patch Grade, going back to the steam era when Bill Price & his companions would hike around the curves capturing classic B&O EM1 Steam locomotives and B&O produced wagon top cabooses working this important railroad line.
From the very early 1990's when we began photographing on this line, the historic Old Mance Post Office was always a key element in capturing the magic of Sand Patch Grade. The building is structurally sound, but will require completely new wood (Eastern Hemlock) boards to redo the entire exposed areas of the building. The building's construction date is not certain, but it did serve as a United States Post Office from 1892 to 1927. Mail would have been "bagged" & "dropped" from the trains passing by and "hooped" to be picked up. We are researching the early history of the building to make it as historically accurate as possible for its long term preservation.
A note on the audio: All railroad/train audio is 100% recorded at the time of filming, and at the locations shown.
The night photo session are held every autumn utilizing the lights installed at the Mance Post Office by David Snyder.
Thank you so much for looking!

What drone is this filmed on???
dJI. Various models. Recommend the mavic 3
Ken Burns mastery cannot hold a candle to this work. But, you had the most pristine "God created" area to capture.
Thank you so much!!! Yes this is such a special area of the planet!!!
By the way??? What model or make is the drone you are using?
We use DJI drones! Highly recommend !
Love the beautiful scenery
Thanks. Yes such a beautiful area!
This is another great video. Beautiful autumn colors. You got so much spectacular views in this small area. The drone shots are very cool also. Good stuff 👍🏻
Thank you very much!!!!!
Will there be a video for the transcon across Texas and California.
Someday but will be a while. Thanks !!!
Hi John, I'm sure glad you are back on UA-cam after a seemingly long break. Your creativity is the best in the industry, I hope somewhere, somehow you win some kind of video photography awards! Would you be able to give your fans a writeup on the music? Such as, are you also a musician? What are the main instruments used, besides what sound like a piano? Can your music be purchased on your UA-cam channel on CD's for when we are in a vehicle driving? Thanks again for another incredible video!!! Marc in Mesa, AZ
Thanks!!! The music we use is a royal pain in the wazoo to use. It’s why we keep disappearing from UA-cam. We have paid all the appropriate license fees but UA-cam every few weeks demonetizes our videos as the company we license from has bots that scan the web and every few weeks we have to resubmit all the licenses. So. Going forward for new productions will be using other music and really do not recommend who we use.
Your viewpoints following the trains also show off them lovely autumn colors (I'm in England, hence autumn) ... and its fabulous
Many thanks!!!! Yes this one was mostly about the fall colors. Next in this area will be snow !
Absolutely stunning videography. Love it❤
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much!
Very phenomenal! Good work
Thank you! Cheers!
25:53 There’s something about a distant train horn echoing through the hills that seems so.. tranquil ❤
Agreed. Can’t wait to record this winter when the hills are covered in ice for hopefully incredible audoo’
Absolutely gorgeous!!!!!!
Thank you so much!!
amazing
Thank you!
From one railroad enthusiast to another... Absolutely incredible. Thank you for all your hard work and effort. It is truly appreciated.
Glad you enjoy it!!!! A labor of love!!
Amazing views. Thank you !!!
Glad you enjoyed!!
Another amazing video from ACME. You never disappoint! Best rail videos on YT by far. Love the deer running across the field at 1:40...how'd you manage to choreograph that!! 🙂
Thanks. lol. The deer are there every morning !!
So, can rail videos be emotional? I say yes!, because when I watch your videos with the Precision filming and beautiful music it reminds me of my dad running trains in eastern North Carolina back when we were little kids and my mom working at CSX corporate here in Jacksonville they both retired in 1986 and the memories are pure treasure, and one more thing- GO CSX!!! Tthank you brother!
You are so welcome and THANK YOU!!!
Superb video, Thank you for the peaceful veiws.
Glad you enjoyed it!!!! Can’t wait to do a snow video on this area this coming winter !
Another masterpiece...thank you
Many thanks!!!!!
Incredible
Thank you !!!!
Thank you for another beautiful video of the trains passing through the Allegheny Mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania! When I retire in 8-9 years I want to restore a house in Meyersdale (the CSX tracks pass right through the town). I was not aware that the Capitol Limited was going to be shut down. It is a shame that there is not a train to bring visitors from Pittsburgh to Ohiopyle as there was a century ago If anyone watching this has a chance to go and visit, do it. It's all within two hours of Pittsburgh and not hard to get to.
The capitol limited may come back. It’s a temporary thing while a tunnel is being rebuilt out east apparently however one never knows!!!
And be sure to stop by the Mance Post Office !
How, how, how do you do it??!! Always spectacular scenery and cinematography! Wonderful!! Thanks for sharing ... and I did catch the little twin bonus at 3:00! [Greetings from Tucson!]
thank you!!!! yes..those deer love sharing that pasture with the horses!!!!!!! Glad you saw those... loved seeing them skip across the field!
always stunning cinematography.
thank you so much!!!!!!!
Wow great vid man, keep it up!!
thanks so much Zac!!!!
Fantastic video, Catches and scenery. Enjoyed watching and have a wonderful upcoming weekend.(Steve)
thanks.. u as well!!!!!!!
Sooo beautiful and relaxing. After looking at Mance on Google Earth-what a remarkable location. Thank you for another video blessing!
thank you so much!!!! Yes.. Mance is a unique spot... sort of time forgotten yet still very busy with trains!!!... with spectacular scenery!
Love your videos! What's the story behind the lone SD40 trailing the freight around the 56 minute mark?
that was a unit for a rail train... for the past few weeks they have been replacing ties and rail on both track 1 and 2 around the Horseshoe Curve! They just ripped out the road crossing from the post office in fact once again this week, but just got it back reopened!
Your videos always make me want to go to these places, build a house and never leave because nowhere could be more perfect ❤️😄
LOL... WELL.. sorta what we did here with that old Post Office!!!! It is an amazing place!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Such a cut above any other rail videos. Love the use of music which is very good and the sounds of the trains. Glad your videos are back on to you tube.
thanks! this was a difficult one to do as there is so much 'squeal' on almost all trains that pass thru (SOMETIMES a very light train without too much weight, when the rail is wet, may make it by without squealing too much but that is ultra rare)
Another masterpiece from ACME. Thank you for sharing your treasure with us all!
you are so welcome!!!!!!
💯👍👍👍
100% thank you!!!!
Fantastic footage! I’ve watched this video probably 10 times! This channel is ambiance in my train room.
Glad you enjoy it!!!! Doing a minor update to this one probably in January. In process of splitting it into 2 to make it watchable. The first part has already been posted : white river valley. Taking that section out of this one and adding more east of Seymour !
If I was searching for beautiful scenery with a train then this would be what I was looking for
Thanks!
Does anybody know where I can learn about the tehachapi pass ...what it looks like from an engineering standpoint and what they needed to do to accomplish what they accomplished...
Not sure !
👍
👍
Great to watch, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Hi! New subscriber. UA-cam put this gloriously spectacular scenic railfanning video presentation in my mix today. I've driven around most of this area for going on four decades knowing how beautifully scenic it is. By watching this stunning masterpiece, I'm floored by how majestically beautiful this passage through Maryland and Pennsylvania is. Bravo! Bravo!
Welcome aboard! And thanks ! Doing a special fall video just on Mance that will be up in a week or so!!
Stunning video - made better with the added footage
Thanks!!! Agreed. The tunnel is a fascinating area!!!
I'm not a bnsf fan but I'm a Santa Fe Fan pre merger though this video is not bad.
Thanks?😂
Wow, such a great video for an iconic RR area. My first experience was back in 2011 when I camped along the tracks in the Mance area, I was hooked for life with the beauty of the area and railfanning in general. I truly appreciated the time, energy, and dedication it took to put this together. Thank you for sharing this for all to enjoy.
Glad you enjoyed it!!!!
You’re very confusing between your trains this one and that one in the CSX is you got one Loco in front another time you have two Locos in front just stop and play the video much better
Ok!
The drone shots make all the difference. 😅
Yup!
Can’t image how many times you had to set up for drone shots Amazing!!! 😮
A lot!!! 😂😂😂
The filming is really great! Excellent work, and I bet it was a lot of work, considering the distance. Thanks for the effort expended. Really enjoyed it 😊. What talent!
Thank you very much!
@ 4:37 , that lighting! If I had zero interest in trains I’d still be captivated by this video! I’ve watched it like 10 times. Incredible sir , thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!!! Early morning sunrise light is well with the effort!!!!
And please check out our other videos !
@@AcmeCinematography I’ve watched ALL! More than few multiple times.
Amazing video everything about it is breathtaking, especially the music. My father and I would drive as many of the mountain roads along the subdivision from Cumberland past Connellsville to chase trains when I was growing up. I think the craziest was an autorack that we got to see leave Cumberland that we chased into Sand patch, Meyersdale, Rockwood, Markleton, Casselman, and into Confluence in the same day - the signals must've been on our side that day. Seeing so many of those places from the drone point of view was mind boggling and brought me to tears a few times. Thanks for this masterpiece!!
So awesome. Thank you so much for that wonderful memory with your dad!!!!!
their videos are so relaxing. you need to show these to young folk so they can see a horizon without windmills. see the world like we did.
Thank you so much!! lol. Yes. Burn coal!
Thats an outstanding video of Techechapi Loop video of UP and BNSF Trains that move thru there
Thank you so much!!!
I love this Techacpi Loop area its the best train watching spot in the whole world there is nothing can beat it I just wished it was all just Southern Pacific and Santa Fe Railroads and it was those two Railroads put Tehchapi Loop on the World Map its the best place in the World hands down there is nothing that can beat it when we lost both Southern Pacific and Santa Fe Railroads I just since its going to be Differnt World to me its just not the same without S P and A T S F Railroads but this place is still Good to watch the trains but in their places now is UP and BNSF railroads but I like in this places past with SP and ATSF
Yup!!!
