$800 beater Civic. I wouldn’t have bought this 5 years ago but EFs are an endangered species these days. What should I do with it? Get it through emissions and flip it or swap it and keep it? Should I do a Chris Fix bondo job on the rust spots? Why not? Either way it has been saved from the scrap yard.

@@mattfoley6082 it’s a common modification, I kinda explain it in the video. You need to block off that oil port if you’re doing b20vtec or lsvtec because the vtec head has a port that doesn’t match anything in the non vtec block. If you put a vtec head on a non vtec block you need to block the port in the head and run an external oil feed from a sandwich plate installed at the oil filter and run up to the cylinder head.

It's one of the best looking EFs I've seen in a long time! It's a '91 DX Sedan, right? It looks like you swapped out the instrument panel (for one with a tach). I'm curious about the steering wheel, too. The '91 DX Sedan had a 4-spoke wheel, but you have a 2-spoke from either a pre-'90 model or '91 Base or DX 3-door. I used to have a '91 DX 3-door so I remember it well. I miss it!

It’s not unusual. These cars / transmissions actually have space for a 6th gear. It’s currently held in with a spacer instead. I guess the lockout mechanism wearing or the spacer has wore out some giving you some movement into the “void” where you weren’t suppose to be

If you use a vtec cylinder head on a non-vtec block, you plug that oil passageway because it doesn’t match up with anything from the head to the block. You use an external oil line to feed oil pressure to vtec. Since I had both a vtec head and a vtec block I didn’t need it plugged and it was preventing vtec from working.

Very curious and unusual transmission damage. Sounds like the technician doing the work was a real "Goomba". How is it possible to crack the casing around the inboard countershaft bearing like that? Even blowing up the clutch or having the input shaft bearing drop a retainer ring (I have had to repair both) won't cause that to happen. I can only assume that he had the countershaft outboard bearing jammed against the locking ring when replacing the transmission case and tried to hammer it back in with excessive force. Should just have to keep the ring open and the case will drop down fully then the ring will lock in. As far as the bolt is concerned, that locks the shift selector in place preventing over rotation so maybe they lost it on disassembly. Hopefully they didn't lose any of the detent balls.

The only thing I will say is I gotta have fancy ratchets lol. Cheap ratchets are my enemy busted a few knuckles with them haha. Same with screwdrivers I’ve screwed up more than a few screws haha but I always tell people get what works for them. I sure do miss that place. I travelled some last summer to visit some and man they were disappointing. I am not too familiar with HF of that generation. @@gsrturbo3786 it would be a good idea to check for those pins. At this point our motors are 20-30 years old and have probably had at least 5 or 10 owners. You never know what kind of pieces are missing by the time it gets to you. The block on this build had an oil pan on it when I bought it. Luckily I took it off to inspect because the oil pick up was missing.
