Bev and I flew our Twin Comanche from Wilmington, DE down to Kissimmee airport in Florida. We do this annually, and this year was almost identical in terms of weather avoidance. Oil, ADs, brakes, and a new nose tire. I'm taking another friend for a ride next week. William works at FlyAdvanced and fuels my airplane, so I promised a fun ride to exercise his new certificate. Nice video
A nice twin turboprop! 🤗
Hm...is that how this airplane should normally stand on the ground, with its nose dipped like this ?
@@vedymin1 nose down attitude normal. In this case, I was braking lightly on what might be a slight downhill grade as well.
What a beautiful ride.
A terrific airplane!
It really is! Very comfortable airplane to fly, and actually quite similar to my twin Comanche. Frank is enjoying himself…..
Nice one Frank! I'll be doing my commercial multi here soon in the PA30. Looking forward to it.
I love the twin Comanche, looks like yours is especially nice. Wish I was riding copilot with you! Happy flying!!

I didn’t even know you were on the ground until I saw the plane was already taxiing 🤯🤯
@@JustClips671 thank you. It’s so fun when you get it right now and again.
I’d like to hear more about the full motion sim. I’m back from Tampa doing recurrent training. Might try it up here too. Bev and I do Jekyll Island every year. Enjoy!!
Always fun watching you fly! I decided to do my IFR approaches for currency in the full motion sim tomorrow so I can shoot a few at St. Simons Island (KSSI) and my gas stop Kenansville (KDPL) . Heading south in a week and a half. Good to see you're out of annual and back in the air.
Thanks for the video and your time. I wish that I had come across it sooner. I’ve owned a PA31 for about 25 years with the Altimatic IIIB and don’t think I’ve ever understood it. Ours needs some TLC. Do you recommend anyone to work on it? I’m based in Allentown. Blue skies!
ABSOLUTELY. contact Jim Good at Lancaster Avionics (717) 569-1953. He understands my autopilot and keeps it going. I appreciate your comments and encouragement.
Really good catch on the runway. Good airmanship.
Frank, nice recovery. Good to have some altitude while making adjustments. I have a '60 Comanche 250 with Century III similar to your Altimatic, but with a different console faceplate. Guess I should check my trim pots as well. My amplifier had some blown caps and I replaced the 8 power transistors. Thanks.
Frank, I'm always looking for better, and still a work in progress. My biggest thing is running out of battery. No, my biggest thing is camera outside of plan and connecting to it w/ app to turn it on! So I turn it on, jump in plane, start plane....yes, filming take a lot. sigh....oh, I film in 4K and use that as a zoom tool, I export video in 1080, works well. Got a 360 that I'm workin into the vids, lovin it..fun.
Frank, Happy New Year to you and yours. Still enjoying your videos. I don't have any suggestions for improving you camera setup but I know you and I know you will figure out a way to make it better! Fly safe my friend!
Rick! Happy new year! I appreciate the kind words. One of my new friends up in Canada asked about my setup, so i figured the best way to explain it was to make a short video. I hope to run into you soon this year, and that you and your family have a fun and prosperous 2024. Frank
Happy Thanksgiving Frank. Enjoy the holiday and the venison. Lol

I happened to see that on FB and said how much I liked it. One of my kids, Raquel ,sent it to me. Nice surprise. I wore it to a gun show recently, and people were stopping me to read it. Then they’d bring their friends over. We all need to laugh at this stuff.
Yikes! Maybe use a plastic screw driver/tuning set. I used to use those for radio work. Glad to see you got it figured out.
That was my first thought - steel or magnetic screw driver was messing with those old analog cards until I saw the trim pot that fell apart. Good job staying safe Frank!
Nice recovery, very interesting, thanks
Looks like good progress, Frank, especially once you get the adjustments done.
I’m looking for a decent VFR day here in the northeast to do those adjustments, and looking forward to seeing how it works out. Probably Monday or Tuesday. Thanks!

I don't see it as being a jerk, only as adding a layer of stress for better training.
Thank you. Mike is a solid pilot, as you can see. He hadn’t flown as much recently, and I hadn’t seen him as much either. No reason to rush then, so I fired him back up slowly.
I love your videos, have been watching them for a while now. I have the aspen, same autopilot and a Garmin 530. I am a retired jet pilot, presently own a Piper PA23-250, Aztec.
Thank you for the feedback. Very much appreciate it. I’m very happy with my twin, but it does keep me on my toes. I just now got the confidence to start tweaking, and will do that when VFR gets here later this week. Planning a follow up video. Great video. I've really missed your updates. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Ted!! I’ve been busy doing a bunch of new hobbies, but I’m about to get back into the videos. I appreciate your encouragement very much.
Frank, great video - nice editing. I know that takes a lot of time. I got my commercial certificate 2 years ago when I retired and have spent the last 2 years flying my new boss and his family back and forth to FL. Afternoon buildups are almost always a challenge in FL during the summer and your video brought back some memories. I look forward to the next video. Let me know if you plan to stop at GED, I would love to catch up with you. Fly safe and keep up the great work!
Will do Rick. Great hearing from you my friend! I appreciate the encouragement.
Good to see you posting again. I've spent rhe summer on a biz trip on Germany. Home in just over a week and i hope mine is ready with new EI engines instruments, strobes and horner wingtips. I figured 2.5 months in Europe would be the perfect time for some upgrades
Perfect scheduling of downtime, plus you have new toys waiting when you get home. Love it!!
Love the Twinkie. Glad to see more videos.
Thank you Dennis. I’ll do another shortly. I’ve been retired but busy.
Really helpful. Thanks Frank. Mark ICS #15503
Thanks for posting. Very interested in watching your flights in the twin comanche. Will be getting my multi training this October in a PA-39.
You are welcome! Love getting the airplane going and using it to see friends.
Why do you pull the throttle back from full throttle to 25" shortly after takeoff? Is that an engine limitation? I ask because in the Advanced Pilot Seminars they are advising against pulling back from full throttle from an engine longevity perspective and even more from a safety perspective. Thanks for posting these videos, they are excellent.
I’ve been trained to do this for years. In my opinion, it spares the engines and props from prolonged high rpm operations. In summer, it definitely helps manage CHTs. Do what you’ve been trained to do, but keep questioning. Monitor CHTs. Some believe most power plant failures occur at first power reduction. I prepare for that but prefer my approach.
I just watched this and your other video arriving a KGKY. I know that final approach well. When I lived in the metroplex (before moving to San Antonio), my IA's shop was at Arlington. I kept 12Y at 52F, north of Fort Worth near TX Motor Speedway. I'd wait at Harrison's for wife to pick me up after flying it across town (took her a lot longer to drive in metro-mess traffic. Made that Right Base-to-Final many times. Those of us "familiar with the local area" get asked to report the Parks Mall on I-20 on the right base. Arlington has a lot of training traffic. Your comment about being dropped low so far out in the earlier video - everything yields to DFW, so GA traffic that can arrive VFR gets put low below their arrivals and departures, and where TRACON can drop you at their convenience. We get the privilege of bouncing across the God's Green North Texas Acre in the summer heat, while not running into those Cedar Hill towers. On the west side of the runway is Bell's XWORX R&D Flight Test facility. I spent some hours there while working for Bell.
It is such a small world. Those flights to Texas were a fantastic way to break in my new engines and the associated equipment. I very much appreciated FlightSafety letting me commute that way too. Go home days were a blast, with an early morning launch to beat the storms. I stopped for fuel at times in Kentucky and Tennessee. That led to return trips to show the same scenery to my wife. Severeville, TN was fabulous (Pigeon Forge, etc). Somerset, KY is on my list, at least the area.
That's nice. A lot of companies are funny about GA travel. Even as an independent consultant, I find customers are more understanding of the expense of an airline ticket than the costs of my plane.
Frank, I just found and subscribed to your channel. I had to stop myself from watching all your videos in 1 sitting last night. A friend has told me how cool my Twinco N8512Y sounds on approach. Now I know what he's talking about. Looks like we've tread some of the same ground. 30 years ago my long student cross country out of Reigel Airport, 58N about 50 miles NW of Wilmington on the other side of Lancaster, stopped in Ocean City, Salisbury, and Wilmington. I worked at Gulfstream in Savannah and Dallas as a structures engineer on the GIV, G150, and G200s. Mine goes in for annual in a couple of weeks. Having all the panels opened is the perfect time to start on my upgrade list (now that daughter's college tuition is behind me). First order of business is EI EGR-30Ps and a EGR-30C as primary replacements, new wingtips, strobes, and tail beacon.
Sounds so cool. I want to know more, but I’m in airplanes next two days. Stay in touch!! Thx for the feedback too!
Nice video thanks for share !!

@@PA30Pilot all of your videos area great. Eventually I may buy a PA-30, it makes things far more comfortable seeing everything in action.
nice video, thanks for sharing.
Frank, Just about touchdown at your home airport, you hear a short chirp or two on the video in the plane, background noise. I am guessing you do not have a stall horn but inserted a stall light like most TCs. What is that sound? I have occasionally heard it in my plane.
I was going to give you a response, but I’m not 100% sure how stall warning versus horn warnings are wired. I know i get an indication for both, but am not sure if the horn/light is dual operated. Great question. I’ll get back to you.
Ok - I feel better now. I reviewed the video and that sound is the stall warning horn. I found a close up of my panel, and the stall light is still there and distinct from the gear warning light. The stall horn is pathetic and weak sounding, but the gear horn by memory is louder. You'll hear the stall warning during slow flight (if you get that slow); in turbulence occasionally; and when I do a full stall type landing. You'll hear the gear warning in a low power condition when the gear isn't down. Great question - please let me know if you aren't convinced. I can capture it on video and test it out if need be.
Stall warning light is yellow / amber; gear warning is larger and red.
@@PA30Pilot Thanks, Frank. I appreciate your insight. I asked because I have heard that chirp a few times upon landing, but my TC only has a stall light. It was never wired for a horn so it has perplexed me... when I heard the same sound in your video, I had to ask! I am certain there has never been a stall horn in my plane. Slow flight, stalls, etc. No horns, only a light. 20 years of ownership. You are correct, the gear horn is much louder! Fly safe, keep the fun videos and Merry Christmas!
Frank, what are you using for the engine heating/pre-heating?
Goto Aircraftheaters.com. I may do a video on those soon. One for each engine that you slip into the cowl to keep our in the mid 50’s. Another hornet cube inside the cabin that keeps the avionics warm and dry, and actually keeps the closed cabin warm. Operating costs about 6$/month.
See www.airdorrin.com/?p=3372
@@PA30Pilot I agree. I use one most of the time in my SEL airplane. last night it got down to 8 degrees so I use two - one in each air intake for each bank of cylinders. This morning my engine CHT's were 55 degrees across all six cylinders. These heaters are simple and reliable. Great video and nice airplane.
Much appreciated!! Looking for a solution for my PA28-181. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas!
The music in the second half is fine. But you don't have an enclosed cabin. I agree music helps you relive the moments.

Frank your instruction is just fine. Very calm and precise. There is a lot going on when flying a Twinco on take off. It’s my favorite twin. Keep the videos coming. Thanks
Thank you very much.
Nice commentary Frank
Thank you sir! Amazing work. I have the same AutoPilot in my PA-23-250 and your videos definitely assist me with my Instrument approaches! God Bless.
Awesome. That’s what I’m trying to do. Thanks for the feedback.
Love your channel, but I have a question. Should you keep trimming right into slow flight? I was taught to stop trimming and take the back pressure so that recovery from stall/incipient spin back to a safe speed was easier.
Great question, and I appreciate your comment. There is merit to stopping the trim adjustments to allow the pilot to recover more easily to the airspeed he or she stopped trimming at. I recommend this process in the jets for stall recovery. In the case of slow flight, I look for the pilot to not only experience slow flight, but to stay there. Stable. That requires power and cooling management, significant division of attention, increased care when executing turns, and altitude control. Using trim to relieve pitch pressure is a real aid, and i expect to see that. You are balancing on the edge, you might say. You could argue that no one in their right mind would cruise around at 85 mph (Vmc is 90!) in a Twin Comanche. I accept that. Still, I am required to have a pilot demonstrate flight near an imminent stall condition for more than a brief encounter. For that, they need to fly with their fingers and not their arms, in my opinion. That’s just what I’m thinking at the moment, and I’m open to your ideas. Frank In the end, it’s just my opinion, but I like balanced controls and see no reason to bias trim for the recovery.
@@PA30Pilot Thank you for the explanation Frank, it makes sense. I love your channel because the twincom is my dream plane to own, a classic, however, running a twin in the UK is out of my budget. I love the IFD stuff as I do fly a TB21 with 540/440 installed. Trimming into low speed regime is important to learn, the B787 I fly at work and the TB21 with the KFC225 engaged both do this in their own ways. Hand flying at very low speeds is a skill worth learning, thanks for your channel.
Good to see Mike knocking off the rust. I flew many hours under his torture that made me a better pilot so don’t be easy on him. ;)
I’m being kind of a jerk. He’s good, so I’m pushing him
Good to see Mike getting back in the saddle. Look forward to the BFR and IPC videos.
Why are you at 10,500 westbound IFR? Did you pick up VFR on top?
No VFR. It’s been awhile since that flight, but I most likely asked for a block altitude to get around or through weather. I hardly ever fly VFR on long cross country flights. Almost never. Typically, I needed 11 or 13 to stay clear of clouds so I could see cells.
I did a quick scan and it looks like the autopilot was holding 10,075' the entire time. I didn't see 10,500 on that one. What time in the video did you see that?
@@PA30Pilot Ahh gotcha, meant to timestamp in my original comment 9:39

@@SorenHume Thank you very much for your interest and feedback. First - I see where you found 10,500 now. I'm thinking that 'might' be a displayed AGL versus baro altitude that I'm flying. I can't be sure exactly. Looking at the view, I seem to remember some build-ups off to my left I was working, so i might also have have been maneuvering.
