There is no doubt in many minds, including my mind, that Russia cannot be allowed to gain even one square foot of Ukraine's sovereign territory, as to the borders of Ukraine prior to the Russian illegal seizure of Crimea in 2014. Whether increased autonomy for Donbas can become part of an eventual peace agreement is an interesting question, but only if that autonomy is fully guaranteed, forbidding Russian annexation of the Donbas geopolitical region. Any agreement between nations, on the matter, thus needs to concentrate on providing the means to restoring full and unconditional sovereignty to Ukraine, a cessation of Russian hostilities and a complete withdrawal of all Russian military forces and military presence from all of Ukraine, inclusive of Crimea. I do not really believe that anything less would be, in any way, appropriate to the circumstances.

About the Western restrictions on the use of weapons by Ukraine. It was very unwise and far from prudent for the West to impose restrictions on Ukraine's use of weapons that come from Western sources. That is because Ukraine ought to be held solely responsible for how Ukraine uses the weapons that it has and can use. Who supplies the weapons should be considered irrelevant. That is because when you impose restrictions on the use of weapons, and then allow specific uses of weapons in contradiction to whatever the restrictions are, responsibility for that is shifted away from Ukraine and falls on those giving permission for specific use (such as against Russian territory in the Kharkiv area). Instead of controlling Ukraine's use of weapons, with specific restrictions, a broader restriction ought to be applied. That is simply the fact of international law that forbids the targeting of civilian targets and civilians by weapons of war. That law must be upheld and if a nation chooses to deliberattely target civilians and civilian targets that perpetrator ought to be appropriately punished. In the case of Ukraine that would mean curtailment of supply if the offense was intentional and repeated violations of international law. In the case of Russia the punishment ought to be more severe intercessions preventing Russia from obtainment of goods and materials destined to support the Russian military and its war in Ukraine. Much more could be done than is being done in terms of sanctions and the fullest possible enforcement of sanctions.
