John 3, verse 16, is a very important verse because it clearly and succinctly states the salvation message. This is often the first verse people memorize in Sunday school and church. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." We also read about Jesus' first miracle of turning water into wine.

I've always loved reading about Jesus healing people. Jesus came to bring spiritual salvation, but he also had compassion on human suffering. He healed many physical ailments, cast out demons from possessing people, and fed the hungry. Our earthly lives are meaningful to God.

Wasn't it great in Luke 3, reading the genealogy of Jesus all the way back to Adam? Until reading the Old Testament in full with you this year, I'd never found the genealogy lists of the Bible very interesting. Now that we know the various people mentioned, by their life stories, not just their names, the genealogies feel more meaningful. A separate note - we've been reading about John the Baptist. Keep in mind that there are two Johns: John the disciple who wrote the book of John, and John the Baptist who was born to Elizabeth and told people about Jesus' upcoming ministry.

Did you hear me say "Jeremy the prophet" in Matthew 2, verse 17? This is actually the prophet Jeremiah whose book we read in the Old Testament. The NT original texts were in Greek, not Hebrew and Aramaic like the OT, so some names translate differently. Similar to how today the name Matthew would be Matthieu in French.

Today's reading had lots of great recalls to our Old Testament readings. Familiar names were Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Rahab, Boaz, Ruth, David, Bathsheba (the wife of Uriah), Solomon, etc. There was mention of the Babylonian captivity, and Matthew also drew the connection to one of the Old Testament prophecies about Jesus (Isaiah 7:14). Luke 2 tells the birth story of Jesus. You'll often hear this chapter quoted at Christmas - both in church and in the "A Charlie Brown Christmas" special on TV 😉

There are a couple names in today's reading that you may remember from past readings. Asaph was a psalm writer and musician. His descendants were musical as well, and helped rebuild the walls. The Nethinims were a group of people set apart to serve in the temple, with the Levites, through physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, chopping wood, etc. It's inspiring to read of the descendants repairing what was broken, building towards their future.

Ezra and Nehemiah were contemporaries of each others. Ezra was focused on rebuilding the temple while Nehemiah was focused on rebuilding the walls. The events of Esther took place before the events of Nehemiah, however, they likely encountered each other in the Persian palace, Esther being an older woman at the time of Nehemiah. From what we can reasonably speculate, Esther may have been the queen mentioned in Nehemiah, as mother or step-mother of Nehemiah's king.

The book of Esther takes place about 100 years after the Babylonian exile. Esther was from Susa, a Jewish community in Persia, as not everyone had returned to Jerusalem after the captivity. Some had chosen to remain where they were.

If the name Zechariah sounds familiar, there's a good reason for that. Over 30 different men in the Old Testament are mentioned with that name. In the New Testament, there is a Zechariah who is the father of John the Baptist. Our current Zechariah is a prophet and priest who lived at the same time as Haggai, when the exiles had returned from Babylon. The name of Zechariah means "Yahweh has remembered".

"Daniel and the Lions' Den" is a popular Bible story. King Darius was coerced by Daniel's rivals to declare a law that outlawed prayer to anyone but Darius. They knew Daniel would only pray to God, so they thought this was a way to have Daniel killed. Their plan backfired.

We've spent quite a few readings on the lead-up to the Babylonian captivity. The book of Daniel gives us a first-hand view of life in Babylon for those who were captured. Daniel was one of the select captives who was chosen for his intelligence to serve in King Nebuchadnezzar's palace.
