My uncle died last night, 55 years young. A life of pain & suffering since a kid & beyond. He became a statistic & wasn’t strong enough to fight it. Resorting to drugs & violence, self sabotaging every step of the way. Last night was his final moments of life & I feel broken. I spoke to him a week ago & now he is gone. Please don’t take any moments for granted, we are here for moments in time until we aren’t any longer. I love you Brian, you were one of the sweetest humans I ever knew. I am sorry I have to write this now - but at least you are forever in peace & no longer in pain. Now you are back with your sweet mama who died when you were 14 years old. I love you - please guide me, I need some extra strength 🥺

Basically, what I think what the ending of Donnie Darko means is that either Donnie actually ended up going back in time to October 2nd, or it never happened. It could’ve been a illusion, since he has schizophrenia. And at some point in the movie, Gretchen asked him “If you could travel back in time and get rid of all those hours of pain, would you?” That makes me think that Donnie decided to let himself get killed so all that pain and death never happened. And the reason he was laughing was because all his life, he was trying to figure out the answer of time travel, and the answer was right in front of him all alone, and he found it hilarious how simple it was. He let himself die so the girl wouldn’t. He let himself die so he wouldn’t have to go through the pain and sorrow of the world ending. He let himself die so he wouldn’t have to kill Frank in the end.
