Ever wondered how to use the Gaggia Classic Pro to make a cappuccino or flat white at home? Here's my workflow when making a flat white at home with my Gaggia Classic Pro. Since a flat white and cappuccino or both 6oz drinks, I have decided to use them interchangeably for the sake of user visibility. Idk. I see this is 1k EUR, and the bianca is 2.4k EUR. I feel like if i'm going to sin, might as well sin 2.4k all the way and hope for the best. No?
You don't need a dual boiler to pull delicious shots. Like with music, enjoy the coffee not the machine!
You can also try flair 58+2 makes really nice espresso.
Is this better than a Bianca?
Being a thoughtfully constructed dual boiler with flow control... I'd say the Bianca has a couple of legs up on the Mara X. But for us, and our budget, the Mara X was a better fit!
Can you tell me about your grinder??
I want one!
Is the steam good on this machine? Looking for a good upgrade from our breville barista pro.
Hey! Yes, the steam pressure is good. I'm not a huge fan of the steam wand tip, but the steam pressure is solid. I've never used a Barista Pro, so I can't speak to the difference. If the Barista Pro is anything like the Bambino, the difference would be night and day haha.
I have always had trouble steaming milk on the Gaggia classic, I’ve had it for over a year. It’s been very frustrating due to the small boiler. I’m looking to upgrade to the Mara X. Does it consistently produce better milk? My Gaggia milk is always inconsistent. Thanks.
The Gaggia is a bit of a learning curve but it honestly can produce milk just as nice as milk from a La Marzocco, Slayer, etc. The key is to start steaming about 20 seconds after you hit the steam button (instead of steaming once the steam light is on). I think this hack came from Lance Hedrick's first video on the Gaggia. My friend, Justin, who competes in the Coffee Fest Latte Art Championships poured an absolute banger off milk I steamed with my Gaggia. But to answer your question, yes, the Mara X does produce more steam pressure and at a more consistent rate than the Gaggia. I'd say the learning curve has come much quicker but since my wife only drinks decaf and I drink mostly espresso, I honestly haven't poured many bangers with it... yet.
Awesome video and sick pour brotha!
why do you shake your milk? is it not homogenized
Good question haha, I think force of habit since we used to buy non homogenized milk!
I wanna sell my gaggia too for this 😍
I think the Gaggia's value has gone up recently due to all of the new potential mods, so it might be a decent time to do that if you want. I sold mine, along with my DF64 and a bunch of accessories, for $1k. That was almost enough to fully cover this purchase since it was at a discount.
@@nathanjhanna sounds like a good deal! Thanks for the reco. I got the 30th Anniv edition, i love it for the looks too! It has become a display for a while ngl 😅 got myself enjoying more of pour over, but yeah Mara X has always been what i want for a machine.
@@BlueberryouWhen Lelit had 20% sales last year. I immediately sold my Gaggia for Lelit Mara X. Worth it 😉
Insane home grinder but I recognize game
@@tabetic it’s so overkill haha. I just have it for the next couple of months.
Why is the EK bad for latte art? Low crema?
I'm being super picky tbh. If you watch one of my more recent shorts you can see a nice swan I pour within an EK43 decaf shot. But yes, less body in general, higher acidity, etc. It's just not as good as the Kinu, or the E65s or E80s that I use in cafe. I usually use an EK in a cafe setting for higher yielding and high clarity shots.
EK43 for home use? ;p
Just for the next month or two haha. It'll be going into a cafe I'm helping open :)
@ ahah I thought so. Btw I saw your other video from last year. Did you manage to launch the coffee cart?
@@SteashEdits I did! My best friend and I started it together. It’s @numacoffeebar on insta if you wanna check it out.
Beautiful machine!
It really is!! I love an open group head design.
Music is too Loud and distracting
Hello Nathan, I have the Kinu M47 simplicity and would like to know the course setting for a triple shot espresso. Thank you!
Great vid!!
Do you use 9 bar opv spring or its the default 12 bar?
How many grams of coffee do you use for one shoot or double shot?
Youre gonna make it big someday my man. I know it.
Nathan thanks for the video! I'm ordering one in about a week, I've been using a cheap Delonghi EC155 but my shots are horrible, bitter, sour, so I use them for Americanos. Truthfully I don't really know if I'll like espresso since I've never had a good one but I like americanos and cappuccinos. Thanks.
Nice vid, nice work flow. what scales are you using here and what's the black thing on top of the scales when using porta filter at 0:33. Cheers
What espresso machine did you go with for your cart if you don’t mind me asking?
Hello, where you get your coffee cup? Good video BTW
I've been having such a hard time doing latte art with the gaggia, how do you do it so well
I noticed you used the coffee pushed out through the bellows in your drink. Saw people say that was a bad idea but maybe I should give it a try as I hate to throw it away all the time, even if it is only half a gram!
Just bought the gaggia prestige model out of the box and I purchased the ranchilio Rocky grinder. I'm 62 I like simple and well built equipment. So far so good I'm retired love coffee. I was making my espresso with a delongi coffee espresso combo. It was time to grow. Hope I'm not disappointed. Good video young man. I hope there will be more on your ownership of the gaggia.
Get a funnel too when you get the stirrer
I did the low tray, and single port steam tip mod, and 9 bar mod on my Gaggia Classic Pro. I think the single port steam tip really helps with the low steam pressure.
Gracias Nathan, estoy apunto de comprar esta maquina, 1 pregunta: cuando ya esta listo el cafe en el vaso, el residuo (cafe) queda muy mojado o bien compactado? Gracias, pregunto porque Ud. Ya tiene una.
Nice workflow! I think Lance said to flip the steam switch for 5 seconds after the brew light comes on as well. Has this method been consistently good for you? No weird change in temperatures? Also, you said you were brewing with the 6 bar OPV. Why not the 9 bar OPV? Great video!
a lot of people say light-medium roast coffee extract better at 6 bar.
Nice drink
What grinder were talking about?
i love the cinematic wide shot here. and when you block the shot and we can't see what you're doing it adds so much mystery and really builds the excitement.
You should do more of those. So nice, very relaxing. Love the vibes!
Do you have any mods on your Gaggia or only use the tricks mentioned? You said 6 bars, so i assume you changed the spring to a 6 bar one? Thanks!
I have a 6 bar spring instead of the standard. That's the only mod besides an IMS precision screen and basket.
@@nathanjhanna Thanks!
every Italians shaking their head when they saw the milk being added. :) Nice WF
Very nice, thoughtful video. TY.
Thanks for the video, very useful! Could you elaborate a bit on how you do temperature surfing? Like when and for how long do you run the water?
At this point in time I wasn't doing anything trackable or repeatable. Now, I run water through the group head until the light turns off. I then get my portafilter locked in and as soon as the light turns back on, I pull my shot. This way, I know the temp is at a close range. I don't expect it to be perfect cause it's a cheap machine, but it's been working well for me so far.
@@nathanjhanna thanks! I recently got a gaggia classic and I'm still learning.
Thank you for repping local artisans!
Great.. I have same machine & grinder combination
What grinder setting are you using on the DF64? I just got one last week and anything below 20 is choking my bambino plus :(. I'm new to espresso machines
I usually am around 15-18 on the Turin. Of course, it might be calibrated slightly different than yours. What kind of recipes are you trying?
I am also in Seattle. Favorite places to get coffee lately have been U.R.L (try the apple prosciutto sandwhich) and the newer Anchorhead location (the biscuit they have is 🔥). Have you considered upgrading the machine with an Auber PID? I did that and switched to a single hole tip steam wand. Now the steam power is improved (as much as you can expect). I also wait ~2 mins after turning steam on for consistency which has helped. I don't really need dual boilers so I feel I will keep this thing for a long time.
URL is definitiely an underrated spot! I have considered it. I'm glad to hear it's working well for you. If you ever stop by Olympia in West Seattle let me know! It'd be fun to chat coffee sometime :)
@Matt, did you also consider the Shades of Coffee PID? I’m considering this upgrade and I’m curious about what the difference is between the Auber and Shades of Coffee products. Thanks! Jon
Hey just moved to Tacoma from the east coast because of coffee! Like the set up 🔥recently did a rudimentary work flow vid as well😅but would love to meet new people in the area!
Welcome to the PNW Nick! I'd be more than happy to chat with ya if you ever stop by West Seattle! I work at the Olympia Coffee on California Ave.
@@nathanjhanna Nice! Looking for Café jobs currently. Have not explored the city yet but you can bet ill be stopping in for a spro at some point! 😉👉🏻
@@error404BrainNotFound nice! Have you been to Olympia in Tacoma yet?
@@nathanjhanna I have not! Still getting settled but its actually closer than i anticipated! Y'all need any shifts filled? 👀
@@error404BrainNotFound definitely check them out! I know we're not hiring at the West Seattle cafe but Tacoma/Proctor might be.
Just got this setup myself. Still can't use the bottomless portafilter without spraying espresso everywhere. Thanks for the video!
What can also help is focusing on your basket amount. If you are using an 18 gram basket for example, up the grams to 18.5. It could clear the space between the shower screen and the puck. Causing more consistent pressure
Any ideas of why that might be happening?
Fantastic overview! Great vid!
I've owned this in black for two years. I've done the filter screen mod, the steam wand single hole mod, bottomless portafilter with wooden handle. I tried many tweaks, turning on the steam wand with the basket in to pre-infuse. I've also done the temperature surfing in the same way in your video. I've also restored a Gaggia MDF grinder with it. I took it apart replaced the burrs, and painted it black to match my Classic Pro. I set this to 3 or 4 depending on the beans. I use a lot of single origin and blends. I'm personally a fan of Onyx Southern and Tropical weather, also of Beane and bean. Pea berry from Tanzania is wonderful mild with many flavors. I alternate from 30-40 seconds for a shot depending if I'm pulling a double. I do appreciate your steam wand advice, I think I've read or used it before but forgot about it. Here are my issues with the Gaggia over time, about half the time I will get a wet or soupy puck if I'm using 18-18.5g, not if I'm using 20g. This could be because my portafilter basket might work best with that amount. The group head allen key screws underneath have come loose once, not a huge deal to retighten them and I did. I also added a little blue Loctite to hold in place. My only other issue is when using filtered water which is all I use to avoid scaling, you sometime will get some cloudy water in the water container if you do not use it frequently, so my routine is to empty it every two days or day. I want to say thank you the video quality of your videos is superb. Obviously you must have a background in videography. Well done. Great tips. Thanks you.
Best video I’ve watched on this machine.
