This might actually be working out.
Would you look at that! Hazelnuts are growing in Fermanagh despite the wind, and the rain, and summer (which has still yet to arrive).
I have started to build a drying area for the Hazelnuts. Isn't that exciting!

Johnson-Su Bioreactor - 900 Days Later | Is it worth the effort?

After a long two-and-a-half-year wait, I open up the Johnson Su bioreactor to see how well the chicken manure and woodchip had broken down. I then put the compost to the test by applying it around some hazelnut trees and in a garden bed. Four weeks after that I check in on the garden bed to see how well the plants have grown. Gubb Farm is producing food naturally without any pesticides, fungicides, insecticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers. This presents many challenges, with grass growth around trees being one of them. To create a good outcome, you...

Hi, we have an orchard too and are trying to work out the best way to control grass growing around trees and between trees down a row. Though my farm is in Australia and the trees are of a completely different species along with the grass being different too, the problems are very similar. Right now I’m considering buying a side shifting flail mower. My plan was to use it to drive my tractor down a row, extending the mower between each tree and retracting it when at a tree. My trees are four meters apart. However you say this takes a long time and you will get an under tree disc mower to mow round each tree. Are you still going to get the disc mower? This is another option I’m considering though it is more expensive. From an agronomist’s recommendation I spray a herbicide mix growing around the trees. It works. It’s not roundup. It is a mixture of five different chemicals that combine to kill grass. I’m not a huge fan of doing it but it works and needs to be done as the grass grows quickly and grows to over two meters tall.

Try to sell green hazelnuts as well, many Polish shops in the south would buy them, they are delicious, try Costless Shop in Dublin as well, if you do don't harvest so early, every now and then I come across green almond but the nut inside is hardly edible because it was harvested so early, same for broad beans

Hi, Thanks for the channel, I am truly learning a lot. I´m trying to do the same in my farm in DK (we have similar climate) but the coppice will be for firewood, I am thinking Willow, Alder, Hassel and Ash. I understand that fencing will help for roe deers and hares (we do not have rabbits here), but we do have many meadow voles. I see that you do not have tree guards for them, what is your intake about it? I am leaning towards not covering if I am planting 1000 trees and just accept the fact that some trees might die from trunk girdling in snowy/cold winters.

Deer are also a problem for me. I use a heavier gauge wire. They still eat down the new growth and even the young branches. They have been known to push the fencing into the trees to eat the sprouts. Never safe until they grow so tall that they cannot reach. But then also so tall, I cannot reach the fruit. My only solution has been a area perimeter fence, tall enough and bright enough to slow them down. Buffalo NY USA here.

When your trees need pruning with decent thickness of branches take the cut branches, chip them, dry the chips and you can sell them in baggies for barbequing and meat smokers. Hazel is a favorite wood used for smoking food as it produces a strong, fragrant smoke. Most alcohols have a high rate of evaporation which carries heat away from your hand.

I've been working on an orchard that has 2 adolescent HazelNut trees, which suckers had always been removed so they did not grow as a bush but rather a mix of central leader to goblet structure. I have been pruning it towards the latter formation. I read HazelNut trees need a lot of sun. However, one of them, which is more isolated from the other trees, has drier, almost burnt, leaves in the Summer. So I have 3 questions: 01 For a zone that gets freezing in the Winter but also too hot in the Summer: What is it better?: Goblet or Bush formation? 02 I was wondering if it'd be wise to let the suckers come up and surround the central plant in order to help with moisture… 03 Has anyone ever tried the brutting technique? I can't find any video about it…
