When making the decision remember that I/O technology has come a long way too. The newer Mercruiser 4.5 and 6.2 are built specifically to be marine engines. Older I/Os were marinized automobile engines and not made to stand up to a wet environment. Also the bellows and other materials sealing the transom are much better as well.

You have to see different ranges, from 2.5-95 HP both brands are good, 100-200 HP Yamaha are all 4 cylinders, the 150-200 you will get also with electric shifting,… the Mercury range between 100-200 is different, 100-150 HP are 4 cylinder engines, and only with mechanical shifting, the 175-200 HP are 6 cylinder and have electric shifting,… 250-500 HP Range here Yamaha have a 250-350 HP Engine but is a 6 Cylinder Engine you will get this engines with electric shift, normal hydraulic steering or with the new electric-hydraulic steering system and Joystick. The Mercury engines are V8 engines with electric shifting and electro-hydraulic steering system,… and this from 250-450 HP and also with JPO System… and there is also the 350-400 as V10 Engine! and the strongest engine from Mercury is a V12 with 600 HP this is the strongest engine in the market, this engine is special for heavy Center Consol Yachts! for me is the Yamaha Range from 2.5-150 the better Range, from 175-200 is for me the Mercury V6 the better engine, and also the V8 from 250-300 HP is the V8 from Mercury my favorite ! Moor cylinders are great!! and the V10 engine from Mercury is a special engine,… the Yamaha XTO 400-450 is to heavy and to complicated engine,… then you have to change spark plugs you have to demount the half engine…this is to complex,… so on, the engines up from 250 HP I think the better engine is the Mercury… and on faster center consoles you will finde almost Mercury….☺️🇺🇸😃

Here's a viewpoint. I've got an 880lb 16ft hull with a 340lb 115 hp Yamaha V-4 2-stroke. My only option to retain the balance and power of the boat is the 360lb Mercury 115, whether XS-Pro CT or not isn't very interesting. Boat has 396lb outboard weight limit and simultaneously 115hp are permitted. So, there's that.

Skeeter whole boat package is better priced . Phoenix boats just don't have the same package deal and their overall cost on the boat is higher as well. Skeeter for the win.

Let me make a comment on this. With years of experience in maintenance and repairs of both brands, and using outboard motors in the range of 10HP to 150HP I can assure you that Yamaha engines have a little (very little) more performance in acceleration from the hole shot... but Mercury blocks do not corrode, nor do they get pitted after 200 hours with Japanese engines (this also affects Suzuki). That is to say, for hard work and capital amortization, I far prefer Mercury. Regards.

The winner is . . .The closest maintenance shop! Don't do any good if you have to take your motor 300 miles to get something fixed! There are many motors to include Suzuki, Tohatsu, Honda etc. also. They are mechanical and they will break!

I own both. The I/O does a lot better job of getting on plane with a boat ful of people, it has more torque. It's also very quiet, and the prop is safely under a swim platform. With the outboard, I like being able to look back and see the steering angle of the motor, which helps if you get distracted and don't remember which way the prop is facing. I think if your on a buget, and not buying something 2015ish or newer, an I/O is the way to go. Yes there are bellows to deal with but they last a long time, and the engine isn't much different from one in a truck. I did a bunch of research before buying an I/O and I had nearly talked myself out of it, thinking it wouldn't survie salt water. However, I'm running the original risors and manifolds from 2005. I always flush the motor with salt away after use.
