The BIGGEST “WHAT IFS” in MLB Trade HISTORY? (Recent)

When you think of Mariano Rivera you think of the Yankees, and more importantly the yankees' dynasty of the late 1990s and early 2000s, but what if I told you that he was extremely close to being a Mariner in 1996. And what if I told you that Ken Griffey was 15 minutes from becoming a New York Met. These "what if" trade scenarios could have changed the landscape of the major leagues for decades...

I started watching Cardinals baseball in 1960 when I turned 7 so this was a little before my time but I think it was the comments of this game on one of his Topps baseball cards in my collection bought in the 1960s why I remember this so well. You are right his performance does not get remembered. Others have also lost games despite pitching a no hitter. Thanks for the video.

Smoking for those Generation's was nothing really regarded as being different. Or odd. Jack Lambert smoked on the sidelines during Steelers games, it's just how Men were back then.

Fun video but speaker needs to get Burdette's name right! I did ot know about the Bob Buhl comment, smoking by Haddix and about the reinterpretation of no-hitter. Not sure how that affects the perfect innings though. Maybe someone can explain.

  • @user-ki2ip6rf5h

Lew Berdette's name is pronounced BUR-DET. (rhymes with "bet"). Mispronouncing a person's name in a UA-cam video is disrespectful. Far too many UA-camrs mispronounce the name of athletes of yesteryear. For example, a UA-cam search of "Lew Burdette" produces MANY videos wherein Lew's name is pronounced correctly.

The greatest pitching performance in MLB history was done by Johnny Vander Meer. He pitched back to back no hitters, a record that will never be broken. To break his record a pitcher would have to pitcher 3 no hitters in a row.

Kerry wood....really???? Doesnt even make the 10 And what does his smoking have to with anything? It was a better habit than a tennis ball sized lump of mail pouch or beechnut chewing tobacco and spitting that tar all over the place. Besides, that was before they put all those nasty chemicals in and on the american cigarette tobacco so it was far less dangerous than todays toxic mixture of chemicals and tobacco. Like arsenic, a known carcinogenic, from the pesticides that was easily absorbed into the plant.

In 1963 Juan Marichal of the Giants beat Warren Spahn of the Braves in a 16 inning game. Both pitchers went the ENTIRE 16 innings with the Giants winning 1-0 on a Willie Mays homer in the 16th. Marichal allowed only 8 hits and Spahn 9. That to me is the greatest game ever pitched.

I listened on the radio in SF to Marichal's NL debut against the Phillies. He had a no-hitter going through to the ninth inning, when Clay Dalrymple legged out an infield hit. I was just a kid, but I'd have killed Dalrymple (kidding) if I could have.
