Building the Wallace Branch in Trainz 2022, exploring asset creation for Trainz in Blender, and recounting the colorful railroading history of the Coeur d'Alenes in the late 1800s up to 1980, featuring the Northern Pacific, Union Pacific, Milwaukee, and OR&N.
Trainz - Wallace Branch - Ep 19 - Pinehurst Paper Mill
Time to add another industry to the route, this time near the western edge of the map: the Pinehurst Paper Mill. For a change of pace, this build will rely entirely on DLS assets! And there's even going to be time for a little bit of operating.
0:00 Introduction
0:10 Track layout
4:40 Fleshing out the town
6:46 Choosing the paper mill assets
11:00 Texturing
13:00 The Wye
14:40 Detailing the mill
23:37 Operating session
Another episode and another town basically done! Now, for the next episode, we'll be shifting to nearby Kellogg and starting a bigger series of projects, starting with the town, then moving on to the smelter and zinc plant. This is the beating industrial heart of the route. I hope you'll join me again here on the Wallace Branch!
** PS: In the video, I mention the topic of disappearing smoke. Yesterday, I found a way to at least make the smoke visible a bit longer so that the cutoff distance is far enough to be hardly noticeable in the case of Pinehurst's paper mill smokestack.

Time to move over to the western side of the map, this time tackling a couple of bite-sized projects near the town of Smelterville, Idaho. The first is the gravel pit, which will provide sand for cement and concrete to build the Interstate. The second is the actual county airport, a small but surprisingly busy little airstrip tucked into the valley between the river and the tracks. For the next...

Today we move on from Wallace and over to the eastern side of the route, near the beginning of the Wallace Branch, to Haugan and De Borgia, Montana. Here the Northern Pacific and Milwaukee Road shared track and no doubt there were some interesting operations to watch back in the day. In the intro, I reference a photo and journalistic website called the Weed Route. Here is a link: newwww.weedrou...

We continue with part 2 of our 5-part series on building Wallace's historic downtown, the backdrop and centerpiece of the Wallace Branch. If you've played Trainz, you probably know there aren't a lot of American-style motels on the DLS. And besides, Wallace happens to have a particularly iconic example of a 1960s era motel right near the railroad tracks: the Stardust Motel. Similarly, have you ...

The Center of the Universe may sound a bit odd as the title for a Trainz build. But in fact, visitors to Wallace (including those who recounted their trips on UA-cam) often remark on this particular street corner in town, a part of the historical district in downtown. The protection of Wallace's unique architecture helped save the town from being razed for the construction of I-90 in the 1970s ...

Don’t u need chemicals going to a paper mill? Tank cars
that’s a great idea, I think I’ll add that. I based the inputs and outputs on the paper mill of Kickstarter Co, but I do want to have some tank cars moving on this route!
Im curious - how did you get the google maps overlay on the terrain like that? I'd love that for my own projects. Great video by the way!
watch the first video in the series, about how to use TrandsDem. It’s a great program👍
@@WastedTris Oh, must've missed that. Thank you.
I rebuilt a '72 Challenger, I know all the blemishes. Don't let it bother you, we can't see the things you see that you have to fix before filming. At least I can't. lol Great video once again. More operating sessions please!
Another brilliant video - Thank you.
I have an idea. What if you build a small railroad museum area?
Unfortunately, this area didn't have any such railroad museum. The closest thing is the preservation of one of the important locomotives used on the route, the NP 1356, which is on permanent outdoor display in front of the Missoula depot. This locomotive was actually used in the rescue of civilian population during the immense fire of 1910. www.missoula1356.org/
however, let me add that I will be showing many different eras at work on the layout, included steam. I created 2 different 2-8-0s for it when I was starting out. And I hope later on to have the chance to make a 2-8-8-2 Class Z-3 for the route, since the Z-3 was the last major steam engine used on the line. However, I still need to work on my skill before starting that project, and, of course, I need to finish the route first!
Great work as always! Do you have an email or other contact info? I’d like to discuss more about the route if possible :)
Could you reach out via the Forums (I have a blog on the Wallace Branch). Or even better, you can find me on the Trainz Discord and DM me?
Wow - Another great video. Amazing work :)
Have to say i really enjoy watching you build this route. I will say im surprised your not in Approach mediums discord showing screen shots of the route. I will say he is a really cool guy. Anyway i look forward to the many videos to come on this Branch line.
Agree, he was the reason I took up Trainz in the first place! He was doing UA-cam a decade ago, hard to fathom. I’m a newbie, obviously. thanks for the encouragement!
Outstanding work again. Thank you for another great video :)
Thank you! The feedback means a lot!
Came for the Trainz advice and know how, stayed for the interesting facts and good music. My only request is turn the bluegrass up to 11. lol One question, this DLC will be for sale I'm hoping? I'd love to run some Milw on it. Thanks, enjoy your day, dude.
Noted about the music. (All are free on YT for download, of course!) I would love to release the route for free, when done. However, the obstacles to that are that it has a lot of dependencies, and also that HD routes may be too large for uploading or content packs. right now I’m slowly working through the first issue. As HD becomes more of a thing, perhaps a solution to issue 2 will emerge? good feedback for N3V.
@@WastedTris Yes sir, I already have "Tupelo Train" in a playlist of mine. That's very nice of you to release it to the public for free if you're ever able to. I wish more creators in flight sims were like that. lol Well, if you ever are able to figure it out, please let me know. Keep up the great work!
Really enjoy your commentary on your process. Gets me motivated to work on my own route. Looking forward to seeing more. Cheers.
Wow. *Every* building in downtown custom made: that is dedication. You are truly an inspiration.
What a holiday present!
yes, exactly! 😄🎄🎄🎄🎄 Merry Christmas!
Absolutely brilliant work. I loved watching you put everything together in this video :)
Thank you very much!
I wish your video gets millions of views because you have great content. Try running ads for your channel using some kind of system.
I'm just posting them in case people are interested, and so I can watch them again later. Trainz is a pretty small community, so I put them on Trainz Discord and the Forums. Beyond that, I'm not going to put a lot of effort at promotion and certainly won't buy ads! :)
These models look absolutely epic!
thank you!
@@WastedTris You're welcome!
Thank you for this mini-series, I enjoyed it a lot.
Stellar work as always!
Another great video. Thank you :)
Great video, but is this just turning into a blender series?
yes, I worried a lot about that. of course, I understood from the beginning that Trainz viewers might not be interested in Blender, even if asset creation is something that makes the route and series different. that’s why I’ve mentioned in the descriptions that this is a mini-series of five episodes on asset creation for Wallace. this is 4 out of 5. then it’s back to Trainz, and there are no other Blender-only episodes. promise! thanks for the comment and for asking!
Great video, my friend. Will there be different versions of the route from the different eras?
Thanks for the question! Yes, we are building up to a specific case where we will have a 1880s version of Wallace and a 1970s one. They can be toggled on and off by layers.buuuut, the 1970s one does have some anachronistic assets like the food truck and the center of the universe manhole cover. Also, there will be mine buildings form the early 1900s coexisting with those from the 1950s or 60s.
Thanks for the tutorial. It’s been a struggle to get Meshy to interpret a pose, even from an image, so rigging in Blender looks to be the way to go. Regarding the final product, my thinking is that the figures I create are supporting assets, like movie extras, and as long as the textures look okay from 6 meters away, that will suffice. Casey
Yes, I agree! My comments at the end are specific to uploading to the DLS. But even there, I don’t expect people will go overboard on detailing. For my own cast of characters, I think your comment is spot on. Doesn’t have to be viewed from up close to have a good visual impact on the overall scene.
Very nice explanation of how to use these new tool properly. Thanks!
Those shadows on the face could be due to your game settings. I've had unsightly artifacts like that before that went away at higher settings. No guarantee, especially since I don't know what your settings are, but upping the shadow setting might at least partially fix those issues.
Thanks! I thought so too. But I am at the highest shadow settings. Also tried shade smooth on the faces, but no difference there, either. Anyway, I'm not an expert, by any means. Will keep searching!
Downloaded some of the buildings off the DLS and must say, very nice work!
Thanks! That's very motivating me to post more of them!
1) This is dangerously close to making me start trying to make buildings for trainz. 2) If this was on the DLS I'd have it in every model rr route I make.
I believe it should be active on the DLS now!
bro is putting in more work to this one building than iv ever put into a route.
lol
Oh wow!
Thank you for the great video's, I'm enjoying them a lot. I really hope you can release this route when it's ready :)
God I cant wait to run on this route! Its looking great
thanks! much appreciated
Got something to watch when I get home! Hell yea
Have you tried using CDN assets on the DLS? I think it would look good on here.
I think there are quite a few, like switch-stands, but I may need to check. Did you specifically mean rolling stock or locos? In that case, maybe not. The Wallace Branch was a pretty exclusive (meaning, not very busy or profitable) affair. :-P
That was neat to watch in Blender. A skill I'd love to pickup sometime. Great work.
Great to hear! I had my doubts about making a Trainz build series that includes some Blender. Ultimately, I thought this way would be different from what's on YT so far, even though my asset creation is far from the greatest. Thanks for watching!
I'm from the UK so know nothing about what you were talking about, It was all very interesting and thought the video was good quality, Audio levels were perfect!
Thanks for watching! I’m from the US but live in Oxfordshire nowadays. Still, anything about UK rail history is a big mystery for me, so I know what you’re saying!
Will this route be released?
Rocky, thanks for the comment! I’m proceeding step by step. first step is to build the route. as I said in an earlier episode, I’m relatively new to Trainz, and this is my first route. when I started releasing these videos, I got a dose of comments on Discord about how difficult it is to release a route if it’s not carefully planned in advance, to avoid missing kuids or pay ware content. also ,this is an HD route with 600 baseboards. I am working on it, it we shall have to wait and see. today I released my very first DLS asset. that is a start towards releasing the route. but it also depends on interest. I have no intention to sell anything or make this more than a hobby. if there are only 2-3 people who want this route, it may be tough. I’m willing to work to make it available. but what I have heard is that even for existing routes available for free on the DLS there are endless complaints about missing kuids or making it backwards compatible, seasonal, or other things I’ve never dealt with. I wonder about how feasible it is. but I will try. again, thanks for your interest, I appreciate it, and I realize it may seem frustrating not to have a clear answer. again,I am a Trainz beginner relatively speaking, compared to those experienced creators.
Wow 600 baseboards? I wish you good luck on the route.
@@RockyisjustRocky well, of course most of those are background mountains :-P
It´s interesting to see your little measurement tool for track distances. I have been playing this game for almost 20 years and by now I have mastered the "eyeball spacing" separation method, using the vertex circles of Surveyor classic. There are plenty more separation assets available online. I have recently obtained one for junction radius, to have an easier time making turnouts for different max speeds and distances. Also from the scheduling paper of yours, the siding being able to hold X amount of boxcars is 40ft. What coems into question is how they measured it. Did they measure junction to junction? Signal to signal? That´s the one thing that sometimes changes on paper.
haha, yep, the measuring tool is just something I did when I moved from S1 to S2. previously, I relied on the big white spline circles. for the NP timetable, who knows? but probably based on how many cars had full clearance.
Don’t know why this channel doesn’t have more subscribers, your very talented. Super great videos!
Will the route be seasonal in it's finished state?
Good question. I’m taking it step by step and never tried my hand at that. But TUME’s route is famous for its winter look. Very tempting. But a steep learning curve, I wonder.
Very nice. Loving this.
When using the scrapbook, it works like a brush. You can hold LMB and drag it across the terrain to spawn that scrapbook on repeat.
that’s true. but I don’t know what part you are watching, but a lot of time on HD I don’t hold down the button because it gets laggy and the frame rate drops
@@WastedTris Ah I see. I was at the point where you were adding some larger trees to the area.
Cant wait for the next video! Wonderful progress especially the water tower which i liked how the textures turned out. (The weathering)
thanks very much, it’s great to have that feedback!
Surveyor 2.0 has an effect layer named "colour". This can be used to change the colour of ground textures. You can use it to make different shades of green for the grass you mentioned.
That’s very true. However, the color layer is not HD, which means that it functions mainly for large areas of scenery. for grass next to roads or paths, it doesn’t work very well, in my view. I’ll use it in this route for sure, though. thanks for watching!
The audio was fine. I appreciate that you speak at a comfortable pace and not too fast. Also appreciated all of the railroad history that you covered.
Nice work!
Hey, it was lovely having you on the stream yesterday. Great progress!
What shrub assets and ground textures were you using at 8:50?
There are quite a lot, but these probably are the main ones seen on screen: - JVC TRACKSIDE spline 3 mix grass narrow (which I edited) - Plant Shrub 05 - Plant Sagebrush 01 - Plant Snakeweed 01 - Bush American Boxwood 2 - Seasonal - Tree Hazel 01 - SAP_Creosote_Bush_2_PBR The last 3, I mainly used only in this experiment, and used them sparingly otherwise. And several different st_rmm_kust assets, including - st_rmm_8_496_3m, - st_rmm_9_676_5m, - st_rmm_71_2004_7m, - st_rmm_80_1608_4m. There are also a couple of "Grass 5a" through "Grass 9o" assets which I have started to get away from.
@@WastedTris Great, thank you so much, I hope to see more of your route soon, it looks beautiful!
Thanks! I promise, it only gets better from here! :-P
This is shaping up pretty nicely. Keep up the good work :D
Thank you so much!
Wonderful progress
Thanks! Great to hear
Nice :)
Since this is my first video post, I would appreciate some feedback. Especially with the audio, which may not be satisfactory. (Other feedback also welcome!)
I found the video to be well edited, and the voice-over easy to understand. I liked you showing reference material and not rotating the camera too fast in trainz. Also, good job not making the music too loud. :) Looking forward to seeing where this project goes in the future.
