HOW TO DRAW THE FUNKY PHANTOM
IN THIS EPISODE: The Funky Phantom was a character created back in 1971 to make another show of young people solving mysteries with a helper, in this case, a ghost or phantom with a pet cat. I don’t know how many seasons it was on Saturday mornings. But a lot of people remember the show. To draw this guy, break the head down into the basic shapes, and copy what you see. Give it a try yourself!

Thanks for conjuring him up and making him reappear. (And I'd love to add those awesome character sheets to my library! 😁)

    Hullo, I am curious about “back in the day” as I have never met an Artist or Writer who has used both pencils. I am 62 and while I purchased the introduction set of Blackwing pencils just released, I have no comparison to go on. So I have heard Orsen Wells was a fan of Blackwings, is that your time frame? I found the pencils in the set I got, good pencils, nothing to write home about, to use a phrase popular “back in the day”! I suppose if you got the money why not waste it on a set of pencils?

    I’m interested in learning more about directing animation. I’ve heard that some directors prefer to use a stopwatch to count the beats in animation while others use a metronome. What do you recommend best, and if so what kind of stopwatch or metronome?

    • @swintonscott3166
      @swintonscott3166 16 днів тому

      I think a lot, a few people used to use stopwatches, maybe some still do, I'm not as connected as I used to be to the rest of the industry. One of my friends gave me a very small electronic metronome, which he used a lot. And we still have a stop watch around here somewhere. I usually go by feeling when I slug a story board. There used to be animation stop watches out there, not sure if there still are. Since Cartoon Color supply house went away I don't know where people get animation stuff like that. Like cel paint, who sells that now? Or animation cels? Maybe an Amazon or Google search..... There may be an app for your phone or tablet device that measures film time, or video time which are two different timings, film is 24 frames a second, and video is 30 frames a second. Give both a try and see which one you like. The timing I did in this demo was very rough. Watching old animation and stepping through it frame by frame is a way to analyze and break down animation moves. Metronomes are certainly great for timing actions to music. And stopwatches are what to use to time general actions.

I thought I had lost my Scooby models, so I had to print some out. A few were very low quality, small file size. But I finally found the actual model packs in the boxes of stuff in my studio.

    The guidelines on this one looked like the head of a snake lol. I don't know why my brain is relating the guidelines to other things today. Scooby looks great and that expression is a tough one to draw, but you nailed it. Would you say it's ok to trace Scooby for a while? Would that help me with proportions?

    • @swintonscott3166
      @swintonscott3166 21 день тому

      Whether you trace or copy, the important part is make the drawing of the character become almost second nature, as drawing a square or a circle. When I was working for Fred Crippen, he told me that if really wanted a job at H-B, I should get a model pack of a show, and just trace the characters. Learn what the character designs are all about of the show. Tracing and copying are two ways to go. If you can print out a model sheet of Scooby and trace it over and over, you will get muscle memory in you hand to eye moves of the shapes that make Scooby what he is. We base of our drawings on circles because they are easy shapes to draw. If you can draw circles with ease, that are pretty close to being very round, you're on the way. I start with circles just so I can imagine where the rest of the character is going to be on the page. I'll demo a couple more techniques for drawing in upcoming videos.

    • @ScoobyAddicts
      @ScoobyAddicts 21 день тому

      @@swintonscott3166 thank you for the info. Maybe I’ll start tracing the full body model sheets so I can gain some muscle memory and hopefully get better at staying in proportion.

  • @ScoobyAddicts
    @ScoobyAddicts 24 дні тому

    I love how the guide lines you drew made it look kind of like a robot dog and then you transformed that into Scooby! Great drawing! This is a difficult angle to draw Scooby at for me and I can never get his proportions right, so I try to stay away from drawing full body.

I really like pencils with smooth control. Not too rough but not too slippery. I tried out some Japanese mechanical pencils. They are alright. It's a tad more slippery but not as bad as say doing digital art. Only downside is you cant use the sides of the pencils to draw. This video officially sold me in getting one. Good day Scott... Had a question for you, hoping you can answer this.. All these years I've been into drawing cartoons ive noticed Charicature artists seem to always copy other Artists cartoons... Im sure there is a reason for it, im just not 100% sure why they do that. My experience with most of those types of artists is they are able to draw from their imagination, though a few of them usually copy, in addition to drawing characters of live models.. Hoping my inquiry makes sense. P.s. you do amazing work yourself. 😊

    • @swintonscott3166

      If you mean caricature artists, that draw funny portraits on the beach or at amusement parks, usually they are kind of young and just starting out. Is that who you are referring to? As far as copying other artists is concerned, we all learn how to draw by copying artists we like. I started out copying TV cartoons, newspaper comic strips, and comic books, in addition to a few of the old masters in art history books. We all copy. Drawing from the imagination is a skill in itself. But usually one needs some kind of reference materials to make the drawing/paintings believable. Not sure if I am answering your question, if not, you can clarify your question, I'll try to answer you as best I can.... Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment, as well as the compliment.

      Awesome. I will probably get myself a copy off of Amazon or Ebay to study and practice drawing other characters by Fleischer. And thank you for answering my questions, I highly appreciate it.

    I did not know you worked on the Little Nemo movie, that is my favorite animated film.. Which characters did you design?

      I just took the designs from the strip and made them into animation ready turn arounds, pretty sure I did Flip, and a tall clown, a professor, and some others. And did some vehicles, like the rabbits pulling an egg shaped carriage, and a ship with a big smoke stack, and a caliope pulled by horses? It was a fun project to work on....

      Thank you for answering my question Mr. Scott, that is so cool. I love Flip, The Professor and the ship with the giant smoke stack. I know you probably didn't work on this character, but the Nightmare King is up there with Chernabog from Fantasia as my favorite animated movie villains.

    I found your channel through your interview with ScoobyAddicts, and as an artist and budding animator following along with these videos and the books you’ve recommended, I have to thank you for these! It’s great to learn from professionals who’ve worked on some of our childhood favorites! I love these tutorials featuring the Scooby Doo characters. If there’s a chance, do you think you do some featuring some monsters from the franchise or some of the side characters like Scrappy?

      Glad you liked the video! Thanks for watching, and for commenting. As for other characters, I'll look through my research materials/model sheets for things like the monsters. I may have some in the magic box.

    Such a great Scooby drawing demonstration. It was so much fun to watch you draw him. There is something very satisfying about watching a character come to life on paper. Thank you so so much for the shout out. Wendy and I very much enjoyed talking to you and we appreciate your time. I’m sorry it took me so long to watch this. I was on vacation and then I had to catch up from being on vacation. Thank you for the work you put into this channel to help us all understand more about animation. I’m excited that you are almost at 1,000 subscribers. 😊

      Many years ago there was a bookstore here in Los Angeles that sold books from France, I don't think the bookstore is there anymore.
