Difference between Cultivated Plum and Wild Plum
Wild Plums have been eaten by humans since the Neolithic age (10,000 years ago). Cultivated Plums have been developed for the last 2,000 years.
There’s a Wild Plum tree that fits YOUR yard, patio, etc. They grow in hot and cold climates, are highly adaptable, more disease resistant and more drought tolerant than cultivated varieties. Wild Plum trees are our native American treasures.

    I have a large patch in WV..The tres are different size with tallest being about 20 feet. There are about 30 trees but no fruit. I did not check them in the spring to see if they bloomed. I did not know they were there until now. There is not fruit.. Any recommendations for this coming spring.?

    • @heppylifestyle
      @heppylifestyle 4 дні тому

      @christophertaylor1575 great question. at 20' tall and in WV (y'all got Pawpaw so pollination likely not an issue), i'm guessing it's too much shade. the stand is plenty mature if the tallest is 20'. i have seen solid fruiting in trees in shade (like, along the C&O Canal trail). but typically, Pawpaw don't fruit well if there's too much shade. possibility #2 is that it's a 'turd' patch -- a colony of poor fruiting trees. YES, look for flowers in early early spring (sorta, late winter). there's is a rare bug that eats the fleshy part of the flower (Pawpaw Peduncle Borer). www.petersonpawpaws.com/diseases-pests-butterflys/ overall, I'm guessing it's sunlight. i just passed through Wardensville, Moorefield & Petersburg. GREAT territory!

    After failing to transplant some free, young paw paws I received, I just opted for the free fruit the following year. I threw some of the fruit that became too old outside for the animals, and now have a paw paw tree that sprouted just under my back deck. I'm keeping it there, too! We may have to cut some of the deck out... haha Next fall I'll be purchasing another variety, but where to plant it? I've read/heard they should be fairly close, but this isn't where I intended them to go... how far apart can they be, in your experience?

    • @heppylifestyle
      @heppylifestyle 10 днів тому

      @karenholt9744 I also noticed that throwing them into the ground lead to many seedlings but didn't have the same success in a pot :/ just toss 'em in the ground -- if the germinate, then great. when you transplant (season), to where they are transplanted (sun/shade; in the ground or in pot), and overcaring (too much water) are factors. plant Pawpaw about 12-15' apart. 10' apart is tight; more than 15' is ok but you're loosing space for more fruit trees ;)

    • @karenholt9744
      @karenholt9744 10 днів тому

      @@heppylifestyle I'm interested in the maximum distance they should be planted apart. I only want 2 paw paws. I have plenty of room for fruit trees; the only other bigger tree will be a Meader persimmon I've planted; all the rest will be dwarf. I have plenty of sun/partial shade options, but the one under my deck took the only moist place. 😂 So, I guess I have 2 questions: what's the maximum distance they can be apart and still cross pollinate (or will I have to get out the brush anyway) and will i have to water the paw paw more than nature provides after its first year (I'm in zone 7A, Maryland with clay soil and plenty of worms)? Thanks!

    • @heppylifestyle
      @heppylifestyle 10 днів тому

      @@karenholt9744 I'm in Maryland, but must be south of you (7b). plant Pawpaw about 12-15' apart. 15' max. watering? tricky question (amount of sunlight & soil are factors). But you WILL have to water after 1 year; for their first 3 years, they need shade in July-Aug (if in full sun) and water. I provide a simple Maint. & Care section here, heppy.org/pawpaw-asimina-triloba/#how_to_grow_Pawpaw_trees The authority is KSU but there too, they don't provide a clear watering schedule because of the factors mentioned above (how much sun exposure, and how well-draining is soil). kysu.edu/academics/college-ahnr/school-of-anr/pawpaw/pawpaw-planting-guide.php Finally, you're in luck. there are many Festivals and Events this month in/around MD, heppy.org/paw-paw-festival/ I recommend you visit and ask away. Pick Pawpaw by twisting the fruit off or cut if off. 4. DON’T pick Pawpaw when it’s hard. Unripe fruit will not ripen on the kitchen counter like other types of fruit. You have to pick Pawpaw when the fruit is soft on the tree. *** Typically, the skin on UNripe fruit is green and skin on ripe fruit have hues of yellow with blackish splotches.

    I am in Wash DC what is best month to prune my peach tree which is 2 years old?

      @CesarPerez-nb7pd winter-time is best. however, there are other factors like a over-fruiting tree and, i do a light prune in summer to remove unwanted growth. heavy prune is best in winter; light/management pruning in summer to maintain shape. please subscribe!, and thanks for stopping by.

    Time to look for North America's largest NATIVE fruit! It's the size of a mango, the fruit’s texture is like custard, and the fruit flavor is tropical. Look for them in the wild or visit a Pawpaw Festival, heppy.org/pawpawfest

    Hey there. Great video, thank you . Do you have any follow up shots to see these plants fruiting after the pruning? Best D

      @Earth_Systems hi. 2023 was a productive year (no pics) and 2024 wasn't (i think it was the heat and i don't water much; historically, not watered). here's my 2024 vid: ua-cam.com/video/2qsoMgS5KmM/v-deo.html the organic farmer i mentioned in vid had a bumper crop; a viewer in PNW has a low-yield yr. is it fert or water or off yr. 2024 was my first off year and my young 10 did great. please subscribe and that's for stopping by!
