As a native English speaker I learned to speak Samoan in my early 20's and worked as a Samoan language instructor for three years. I've created this channel to support other English speakers who are interested in learning to speak Samoan whether it be to enrich their travel experiences or better communicate with close friends and family. My intent is to share the knowledge that I personally developed as someone who learned to speak Samoan in early adulthood as well as teaching it professionally to anyone who is interested and willing to learn.

Thank you for this series, Jacob. Since I have Samoan family, I have decided to learn Samoan. I have also purchased your book to begin this journey. Awesome!
This is a great resource for learning Samoan. But I should have paid more attention in English class at school, helpful to know the meaning of nouns, verbs adjectives etc
The way you teach languages is exactly how I need it broken down. Do you recommend any books or exercises to help learn? Why did you initially start learning Samoan?
I’m glad it’s helpful. I started learning when I was asked to serve as a missionary in Samoa. As far as books go, I don’t really know of any that are still in print. I’ve thought about trying to make one of my own but just haven’t had the time
Decided to start my Samoan speaking journey. Your videos have been awesome! Really learning a lot from them. O a'u o se afakasi - so wanting to learn before I go and get a pe'a done. Fa'afetai tele lava!
Best of luck!
Full samoan here. Somehow never got taught much samoan (parents prolly wanted me to be good at english!?). Grateful for videos like these👊🏽
Glad it’s helpful. Situation like yours is why I made them. Thanks for watching
Just found this … thank you so much. My girlfriend is Samoan and I’m trying to learn her language.
You can do it!

Best of luck to you. Let me know if you have any suggestions
Hi Jacob, I'm half Samoan and planning on going to Samoa end of the year and speak the language better. It's amazing how you picked it up so quickly. Good work fa'afetai lava!
I’m glad it sounds good now, it definitely didn’t start out that way 😝. I hope you have a great trip and that some of these videos will prove useful
My cousins speak Samoan when they don’t want me to understand

Thousands of people want to learn Samoan, so it's a shame to see this only has 219 views at the time of this comment.
You are a lifesaver. I hope to be able to speak to my extended family in samoan for the first time in my life soon
Malo le Soifua
Your lessons are great!!!
Glad you like them!
Samoan here trying to reconnect with the language. Thanks for this
My pleasure
That was really good .. 💓
Thanks
I am a native speaker and fluent in Samoan. I want to say faafetai uso. You have done a phenomenal job here breaking it down for those who really want to learn the language. My kids are half Samoan and this is a great resource for them to see the hows and whys things are the way they are. I cannot teach that part of the language. Maybe I can do a little bit of it but I would probably knock them on the head a few times before they get it, so it is best to stay off it. Please keep it up uso, malo lava faafetai.
Thanks for the encouragement, I’m glad it’s helpful
Hi how is “he smiles” / na te ‘ata? How is that a past tense?
Sorry I see it is a 3rd person, I thought “he” would be 2nd person?
Good question. “Na te” is a little funny because “na” isn’t the tense marker that sentence, “te” is. So for present tense you could say “na te ‘ata” but more often you’d probably hear “e ‘ata o ia” or even more often instead of a pronoun you’d probably hear “e ‘ata le tama/le teine” . To say “he smiled”, you could technically say “na na ‘ata” or “sa na ‘ata” but again, i think you’re more likely to heat “o ia” or just a less specific noun (le tama, le teine, le tamaloa, etc)
@@JacobSmith-ce8gn thank you for the quick reply and the explanation. Ah that makes sense too “e ‘ata o ia.” I’m glad you clarified that you could also use the present “na te ‘ata” too. Thank you for the videos, they’re very clear and I’m enjoying learning from them ☺️

Hello Jacob, this series has been extremely helpful and fun to watch. I think the videos you made were some of the language teaching videos I've ever seen. I was wondering if you could provide links to all your powerpoints that you used in this series. The first couple videos have them linked, but the rest don't. This would be a life saver!
Glad they’ve been helpful. Here’s a link to most of the slides I think, drive.google.com/drive/folders/1outuIEhM-dv5fMIb4h1ZEXWBlIBkfk5E. Let me know if there’s any that are missing that you’re particularly interested in
@@JacobSmith-ce8gn thank you so much for this. Would it be possible to have the adjectives, prepositions and conjunction slides too. I’m beyond grateful!
Been trying to learn Samoan from your channel and another channel… thank you for the help… I just have to learn more vocabulary words
Malo uso, long time!
Thank you for this! Really helpful
Glad it was helpful!
This is an amazing resource! Thanks so much!
You're very welcome!
Thank you for sharing, my grandmother was from Samoa.
Fa'afetai mo lou ata uce.
I am a lover of languages presently working on a scripture in Samoan for my UA-cam channel. Your videos have helped me greatly to understand how the accenting goes. Thanks and blessings!!!
Glad it was helpful
Definitely great videos, will have to share with the rest of the family. Many of us living in western lifestyles never picked up the language, a little embarrassing not speaking it or being more involved with our elder family members who only speak Samoan. Thank you very much going to all the effort putting all these together, much appreciated
So glad you found them useful, being palagi I was never shamed for not knowing something or for mispronouncing something but I know that’s not usually the case if you’ve got real Samoan roots. Keep working at it and please let me know if there are other topics you think would be worth covering. I haven’t posted in a long time but I’m still interested in putting something out there, I just ran out of ideas 😀
I love all your teaching methodologies, experiences and practical ways for us to learn. I agree with learning pronunciations and all the other fundamentals, structures etc, best way to learn.
Thanks for the feedback
Hi I’m pleased to say, just found your channel. I’m NZ born half caste. My Samoan is def 2 yr old level so I’m learning heaps from you. Thank you
So glad you’re finding it helpful
Love it. Perfect!! You are excellent and know your stuff! So proud and makes me happy as Samoan that you got this.
Thanks so much!!
Just found you jake at almost 2am, just wanted to thank you for all that you’ve done, I wish you knew how amazing this is, as a full blooded Samoan, thank you for leaving something that not only my ppl can learn and enjoy, but the world as well. You’ve done an incredible job. Thank you.
Thanks, I’m glad it’s been helpful. I haven’t put any new videos out in a long time (just got busy) but let me know if there’s things you’d like a video on or other questions. Just looking for ideas really on what to do next
