Fantasy Worldbuilding and Maps - Drawing a Title Banner

In this video, I’m continuing to draw the fantasy map of the Oxgate region where our latest book Murder at the Old Wolf Inn is set. I’m also talking a little bit (well, quite a bit, actually) about our Dungeons and Dragons campaign world and how it all started 25 years ago. The autumn weather has been quite mild so far this year here in Oxford, so I took a long walk this weekend and brought my ...

      Hello and welcome, Serenity! I dug through my Chaos Drawer (it’s like a Bag of Holding, essentially) and found two of my oldest D&D maps: The second version of Northern Farraway that I recreated after we lost the original map, and the original (and incredibly messy!) map of Western and Eastern Farraway. It’s been ages since I had a proper look at them, and it brought back so many memories from all of the fun and crazy adventures that my D&D group and I’ve been on. I’ll show the maps in the next video and I’ll also talk a little bit about the history/lore of Eastern Farraway. I’ve filmed the video, but it still needs to be edited, so hopefully I’ll release it on Thursday. 😸 Cheers/ Tove P.S. Thanks for your comment and for subscribing! ❤️

      I completely agree with you, Todd. I’ve been using Photoshop and I’ve been drawing digital for ages, so in a way, this is going back to the beginning. 😺 When I started making hand-drawn illustrations in ink - I was terrified! Where is the CTRL + Z button? How do I erase that? And how do I flip the illustration? Where is the warp tool? …Not to mention, what happens if something goes h-o-r-r-i-b-l-y wrong? (Spoiler alert: Like 10 minutes ago, when I just drew my hand across the not-entirely-dry ink? Gaaaargh!) Having said that, I like the man-up/woman-up feeling. No safety net, just draw. There’s an immense freedom in that, which I realised that I’ve missed.

      That’s a nice idea, I’ll add that in a future video! 😺 All of our books and adventures are set in Eastern Farraway, a D&D campaign world that I created together with my D&D group. It all started with a simple hand-drawn map. We had a rotating DM system, and our group were heading towards Waterdeep (I think?), but somehow we never really got there. So I started drawing a map to keep track of how far we had come to keep track on our journey. The map eventually became like a bullet point list of places we had been and a record of our adventures. We spent years in Northern Farraway, until we lost the map during a move abroad. We later explored Western Farraway, and currently, we’re in Eastern Farraway. I talk a little bit about the campaign world in one of my earlier videos, if you want to know more: ua-cam.com/video/P294I6yPCRM/v-deo.html Thank you so much for your comment, it’s great to get feedback and a little bit of insight into what people want to know (and see) more about! @midnighttower4717 19 днів тому

      @@renflowergrapx I completely agree! I think it’s good to know the rules, and then you can happily decide if you want to stick to them, or break them. Especially when it comes to fantasy map-making: It’s an advantage to have a basic understanding of geology and say, for continent or mountain formation. And I like it when you can add a fantasy/magic explanation to something so that it makes sense to the worldbuilding. For example, I know that there is a desert in one of the D&D campaigns that has a desert, which is quite illogical from a geological perspective map (it might be Forgotten Realms, I don’t remember). However, the somewhat unnatural location of the desert is later explained by that once a golem was left there and ordered by its master to dig. The golem was abandoned, but since it’s a magical construct, it has never stopped digging. With time, this led to that an entire desert was created. When it comes to tutorials, I like it when it contains information for different levels. It makes it useful for hapless beginners (like me), but it can also contain useful information for the more advanced viewers. Sometimes even simple tools or tricks can be overlooked as you create your own solutions or workarounds. (I’ve been drawing digitally in Photoshop for years, and I still never uses masks and I happily ignore naming my layers, lol.) Coffee and fantasy maps for the win! 😺

      Hi Todd! Sorry for my tardy reply, I’ve been on holiday for a while. I use Langton watercolour paper, which I cut out from the sketchpad. Since I don’t use tape, I tend to put the paper in press under heavy books. At the moment, they’re stored willy-nilly with no direct system at all. I think you might use wax to seal the paint, but I haven’t tried it so far. Thanks for your comment! 😺

    I've done similar maps long ago when gaming with friends, player enjoy seeing overhead views or finding maps. Adding in ponds, abandoned fields and ruins from a cabin to a crumble tower can change a game from just going from point a to b. Keep mapping I just started my art on dragons and fairies a few day ago too and I'm 59, not too old to start. Good luck.

      I completely agree: I think maps, and especially maps for fantasy novels and roleplaying adventures, create something amazing: It makes an imaginary place real. (At least my brain tends to go: “Well, of course it’s real: Look: Someone made a map over this place.) Maps also spark the imagination, both readers and players tend to start asking questions and envision the area. My old D&D maps were made just so that I could keep track of places, but with time it became my strongest tool as a DM, and I still use them for worldbuilding and ideas for my books. Also: Drawing dragons and fairies at 59 years old: You just became my personal hero. Thank you for your comment and an awesome start to my day! 😺

      Go for it! I started drawing maps after I got inspired by other cartographers. I used to draw simple maps during our D&D adventures, to keep track of where we were, but with time it turned into a type of chronicles: The names of towns and inns along the road became landmarks over where we had had wonderful - or dangerous! - encounters. The first maps I made were very simple, and it wasn’t until last year I started experimenting with watercolours. It’s so much fun and I highly recommend it! Aww, thank you so much! 😸 I used to paint with gouache when I was younger, and I really liked the vibrant colours and consistency of the paint. Watercolours are an entirely different beast. I still haven’t completely figured out how the layering effects work and the different techniques, but it’s fun. - And terrifying! I’m so used to working with digital art, where everything can be erased or adjusted. I hope that you start painting maps for your campaign, it’s great fun and I’ve always felt that having a map on the table makes the fantasy world come alive. (It’s like: We got a map! @@midnighttower4717 they're very different paints despite being so similar! I've had to unlearn working from light to dark (though sometimes it's ok) and layering transparently, instead going thin to thick paint. But the vibrant colors are so nice, like you said! I agree about maps, and there's a charm to having them as well... Or perhaps I just like cartography 😁

    • @midnighttower4717
      @midnighttower4717 3 місяці тому

      @@NefariousHippie Huh, I’ve never thought about which order I work from (light to dark, or dark to light). I’m such a noob, lol. 😺 The layering aspect of watercolour is very similar from working with digital art, so that is familiar to me, but obviously, there is no delete or CTRL + Z button with real paintings. (Which freaked me out in the beginning.) Now, I’ve learned that mistakes are okay, it’s part of developing my art skills and nothing to be ashamed of. Maps are awesome, I’ve started drawing them last year and although I’m far from an expert, it’s so much fun! (I secretly hope to make maps for my books one day, if I can reach that level of skills.)
