Really helpful. I teach wet felting and have tried using a variety of balls to mixed success, your info made me see why sometimes investing in better quality works. :-)
Fantastic video. You make it sound simple!
Thank you! It is simple really once you get going so I hope you’re inspired to have a go at felting on a ball!
Fab!
Thank you!
I am trying to find out what kind of felt do I buy for a purse. I am buying your book but since it doesn’t come out till December I need my supplies before because for Christmas my granddaughters and I are going to make a wet felting purse.
Hi, I’m assuming you’re in the US. My first book ‘Wet Felting’ is available now on Amazon, my new book ‘3D Wet Felting’ is available from my UK shop now (the link is in the description below the video). I also have 4 online classes where you can learn wet felting on a ball, again the links are below the description. Hope that helps, thanks for your interest!
@@NatashaSmartTextiles will your first book tell me how to wetfelt a purse on a ball and make the outside strings colorful?
Yes, it’s a simple bag without a flap. You should be able to see a preview on Amazon!
Ihave been really interested in making a wet felt bowl on a ball and bought your book ( I waited awhile for it as it was sold out at first!) I followe dyour instructions but I am afraid I didn't do well . I guess I should have purchased the course instead. Once I 'recover" from my disappointment, perhaps I will try again. You make wonderful objects.
Very beautiful design, i don't have much roving, mostly wool yarn, but I do have alpaca fleece to play with!
Thank you for watching and commenting! And yes you can definitely use alpaca too!
Bellissima , grazie ❤❤❤❤
Thank you ever so much! Excellent!
Thank you for watching and your lovely comments!
I have your book and read from cover to cover. I loved it! It was recommended by my welt Felt Class Instructor.
Thank you for your lovely comments, I’m so pleased to hear you enjoyed my book (and that it was recommended to you too)! You might like to know that my new book is about to be published in the UK any day now, so I hope you’ll enjoy that one too!🤞
please fix your audio volume, I have everything on my end as loud as it will go and I can Barely hear you, and that is with my hearing aids on!
Sorry you’ve had trouble with the volume, this was one of my first videos so I didn’t even have a microphone then! But I hope you’ll be pleased to hear I use a microphone for the later and more recent videos, so I hope you’ll give me another try! Thanks for watching and getting in touch!
I subscribed and thank you! I have been wanting to learn this! 😊👍❤️
Thank you for your lovely comments, I’m so pleased you enjoyed it! Ps You might also like my book Wet Felting which has more content like this (you can see a preview on Amazon)! Happy Felting!
Traducir al castellano, please!!!
Hi, I’m sorry this is only in English!
Have studied lots of tutorials before starting my wet felting journey and found your tutorial by far the clearest and most informative. Thank you, can't wait to get started.
Thanks so much for commenting, that’s great to hear! You might also like my book Wet Felting which is full of information and tips for getting great results, you’ll find it on Amazon. Enjoy your ongoing wet felting journey!
Brilliant teacher - went on basket on a ball course with Natasha. Highly recommend
Thank you so much for watching Lynne and your lovely comments!
The rolling diagonally to bring corners and edges in was new to me and I’d never thought of making a resist with several layers stuck together so thank you for that. Very informative with lots of little tips along the way. Fab!
Thanks so much for watching and commenting, I’m glad you found it useful!
Thanks
I’ve got your first book and the Big Bertha ball. The ball is pumped up to a circumference of 32 inches at the moment, can I really get it to 37 inches? And will that be big enough for a cat cave? Now I can see I need to get your new book after easter 🐰
Hi, thanks for watching and buying my book! Yes you should be able to get the Big Bertha ball up to 37”. I’m not sure that size will make a great cat cave though, it will probably still be a bit small (remember your shrinkage is going to be around 25%). I’ve got a cat cave design coming in my new book and for that I used a much larger exercise ball (the yellow one in this video). So yes you might want to wait until book 2! And in the meantime maybe try out your Big Bertha on a large bag, bowl or basket?
@@NatashaSmartTextiles Thank you for your reply, I’ll have a go making something else then & will hang fire for the book & a new ball.
You are a great teacher, thank you so much for this tutorial!❤️
Thank you so much for watching (and taking the time to comment), I’m so pleased you enjoyed it!
I like that you have books and on line courses. I was wondering if you can use coarse fibers from sheep that have been raised for food. We don't have many mills in Quebec, Canada and farmers often throw away the woollen fleece, because there is no value for them in trying to use the fleece which is not very soft.
Hi, thanks for watching! I think the honest answer is that you would need to try out the sheep’s wool and see how it felts. Fibres from different sheep breeds are all different, so it’s only by doing a test that you’d know. So you could try felting a small flat piece of felt with the fibre and see what happens! Good luck!
@@NatashaSmartTextiles Thanks for this honest answer. A try is a good idea !
Check for spinning/weaving guilds in your area. They will know where to source felting supplies, including sheeps wool. I am in Ontario, and I am finding supplies much more abundant than when I started 25 years ago.
Very interesting! Well done on your fresh new upload!! Anja x
Thank you for watching, I hope you enjoyed learning all about felting balls (I’ll be testing you when I next see you!)😅
Hello Natasha, I want to do your hat and cowl class, but the link above is taking me to 'Living Felt' tutorials, and the pricing is in USD. Is this correct? And just to clarify, once I join, and pay for the class, there is no time limit on it? Thank you.
Hi Natasha, I managed to sort it out 😊. Thanks.
Hi Marie, I’m glad you managed to sort it out! Yes it’s all in dollars but it will convert to pounds, and the course gives you forever access in your own account area so you can watch and rewatch the videos as much as you like! You might also like to know that I’m working on some kits to go with the course, so do watch my social media or sign up to my newsletter for that. Thanks so much for joining the course, I hope you enjoy it and look forward to seeing you in the class chat!
Sorry, it’s speeded up so much I can’t watch it.
Apologies, it’s just meant to give you a flavour of making a felt heart dangler. If you’d like to make one yourself there’s a detailed tutorial @livingfelt.🩷
I got the gist of it! But I’d love a tutorial where we could really learn. I’ve made some wet felted items. Yours is spectacular….
@@debishaw9355 Hi, you’re in luck, just visit @LivingFelt for a full tutorial (search for the heart dangler)!
I bought your tutorial yesterday and simply cannot rave enough!!!! Your explanation, sharing your thought process, beginning to end detail, and of course your creativity leaves me speechless! I have many decades of handwork….. crochet, knitting, quilting, embroidery and most recently needle and wet felting. I bought your book as well and am so excited to get started! Congratulations on a VERY well done tutorial!!! Anyone wondering if they will get their money’s worth….. ABSOLUTELY 💯!!!
Hi Jessica, thank you for signing up to the course and for your lovely feedback, I’m so pleased you’ve enjoyed it! Now it’s over to you to make your first bag, do tag me in when you share any photos as I’d love to see!🥰 ps hope to see you in the private Facebook group if you’d like to join!
Exquisite!
Hi Christy, thank you for watching and for your lovely feedback, I’m so glad you enjoyed it (and, most importantly, it’s enabled you to make a successful piece of felt!). I have a private Facebook group for anyone who has joined one of my online classes, so if you’d like to join it (hopefully for more inspiration and ideas) just search ‘Felt Bag on a Ball’ on Facebook! Love this tutorial! I made my first piece of flat felt today following your tutorial and it turned out great! I also bought your book and your class on the Living Felt website. You are so good at what you do and I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge
Lovely, excellent quality video and instructor! i am very grateful to you dear lady! Cheerio
Thanks you for watching and commenting, I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Question: Is it necessary to keep changing the soapy water to be very hot? Thanks!
Hi Linda, I generally use warm/lukewarm water to start and keep the same water throughout the main felting stage, til prefelt stage at least once I know all the fibres and embellishments are bonded together. There’s a risk if you introduce hot water too early that the main fibre will just felt to itself before the curly locks and yarns have had a chance to bond with it. So stick to lukewarm water. Once you’re at prefelt stage and have cut out the purse flap and given it a rub, and all the fibres and locks are staying in place, then you’re into the fulling/shrinking stage. If your project is being slow to thicken/shrink, then is the time to maybe refresh the project with hand hot soapy water as the heat will help the shrinkage. You can also do alternate hot and cold rinses at the end to help shrink the felt. I hope that helps! And if you’d like more info and tips you might like my book Wet Felting, it’s available on Amazon!
@@NatashaSmartTextiles Thanks so much! Your tips are a giant help. 💜
Thank you so much Natasha. I am now wet felting a purse according to your instructions; kept jumping back and forth to this video and the project came out beautiful. So appreciative!!! 🥰
Hi Linda, thank you for watching and for your lovely feedback, it’s great to hear that you enjoyed the tutorial as well as making your purse! Happy felting!
Lovely tutorial thank you. I found it interesting that you say to put the bubble wrap ‘bubbles down’ which seems to contradict instructions I have found elsewhere. Is there any reason for your choice, please?
Hi, thank you for watching! I genuinely don’t think it makes any difference which way up you put the bubble wrap! Some felters I think prefer the project next to the bubbles as the bubbles hold extra water next to the project. I prefer the smooth side next to the project on the basis that it disrupts the project less. But I honestly don’t think it matters!
@@NatashaSmartTextiles Thank you for your prompt reply and explanation. To be honest and as a total beginner to wet felting, it concerned me when I saw all the dimples on the felt when they form the butter on the felt sandwich! I shall follow your method because it’s the one that really seems sensible to me. Thank you again. 🥰
@@maryblencoweYou’re welcome! If you’re looking for more info you might like my book Wet Felting which has loads of detail, tips and projects. If you’re a beginner I think you’ll find it particularly helpful to get you felting successfully! It’s on Amazon!😁

I am a beginner I would love to learn this.
Thanks Jeneen! You can find out more or sign up via the link in the description below the video. Or you can also find instructions for a basic bag on a ball in my book Wet Felting, available on Amazon!
what size rubbing tool are you using?
Apologies for not spotting your question sooner! I'm using a palm washboard rubbing tool from HeartFelt Silks in the US, I hope that helps!
@@NatashaSmartTextiles what size?
I think I used the jumbo size, 7” in diameter!

New sub. Beginner wet felter. You explain everything so well.. can you add decorations after you’ve wet felted one piece and let it dry?
Hi, thank you for watching, and for your kind feedback, so glad you enjoyed it! So in terms of adding decoration afterwards, I’m assuming you don’t mean adding more by wet felting (as that won’t really work as the wool fibres will now all be felted together). But you could definitely use other techniques on top, such as needle felting, stitching etc. In fact I always think that it’s the layering of different techniques and materials which makes pieces even more interesting! Ps If you’re new to wet felting you might enjoy my book which covers all aspects of wet felting and materials. It’s called Wet Felting and you’ll find it on Amazon or in my Folksy shop!
Thank you. I have fallen into the felting rabbit hole and appreciate your tutorial on embellishing. I've been looking for some new design ideas. ~ Karen
