RELOAD - Painting Russian KV-2 Tank for Axis & Allies
This is a "reload" of a previously uploaded video to help grow my channel. I did make a few edits though to make it a tad shorter and have different music. Enjoy....
In this video I will show you the steps I took to paint a Russian KV-2 tank for Axis and Allies. I love how it looks with my Axis and Allies setup. I am certainly not an expert but I am learning new tricks as I continue to paint my pieces. Hoping to inspire others by getting involved in this hobby. Let me know what you think.

Miniature painting for the game Axis and Allies involves the meticulous art of bringing small-scale military figurines to life with vibrant colors and intricate details. In this strategic board game, players command iconic World War II forces, and enhancing the gaming experience through painted miniatures adds a visually immersive dimension.
Enthusiasts of miniature painting for Axis and Allies often focus on historical accuracy, striving to recreate the uniforms, equipment, and insignia of the various nations represented in the game. Attention to detail is crucial, as painters aim to capture the essence of each unit, from infantry and tanks to aircraft and naval vessels.
The process typically involves priming the miniatures, followed by layering and shading to achieve realistic tones and highlights. Fine brushes and steady hands are essential for intricate tasks such as highlighting facial features, replicating camouflage patterns, and adding weathering effects to simulate battle-worn authenticity.
While some painters adhere closely to historical accuracy, others (like myself) may take creative liberties, introducing personalized color schemes or thematic elements to distinguish their forces on the gaming board. The end result is not only a visually striking array of miniatures but also a unique expression of the player's artistic interpretation of the game's historical context.
Ultimately, miniature painting for my Axis and Allies game play and setup serves as a labor of love, enhancing the overall gaming experience by transforming ordinary game pieces into captivating, three-dimensional representations of the pivotal events of World War II.

I wanted to give an update to an old video I had shown a long time ago (shown below) where I showed how to magnetize your chips. The stickers would not "stick" to the poker chip causing the sticker and magnet to be pulled away. This would force me to re-glue and re-st...

Hey how small magnets are you using (european size please)? do you have a metal sheet under your game?
Hi Thornbergz... I purchased all of my magnets from this site (www.apexmagnets.com). To be honest, I am not sure of what sizes i used for all of my pieces as that was so many months/years ago. I can tell you that they are very small (2mm - 3mm in diameter depending on the unit or item). And yes... I do have a very large piece of sheetmetal that i had cut specifically to fit on my table which is underneath the map. It provides for a very nice gaming experience.
Lt. Dan. Your map, where did you get it? Is it a standard size of 1940 Axis & Allies Global?
Hello patrik…. I had a printer printed it that would size it according to my table size. The size of the map is roughly 85” x 39”. I do offer this map through combatminiatures.org. You will have to ask rich (owner of the site) as to what sizes he offers and if he will do custom sizes
Jean
Hello NZLAR... Thank you for your compliment. Yes, you can buy the Axis and Allies G40 version of the map on combatminiatures.org. I am coming out with another version in the next month or so with all new artwork. I hope this translation works for you on your end. Cheers
Hey Lt. Dan, these are great looking tanks. For many years I have been buying GHQ tanks made from tin. They are even more detailed than the ones from HBG, but it is a bit pricey, to say the least. I started painting all of my units many years ago, and also use decals. But while some stick pretty good by applying them onto a flat surface, others don't. Especially if the surface is bent or not flat. Now I am going to use your technique to get a better result. So thanks a lot for sharing how to get the job properly done. I know it takes a lot of patience, but once you played with painted pieces, you never want to get back to the unpainted stuff OOB. Btw: Do you remember when Adalwolf and I shared our comments under one of your videos a few years ago and found out, the we both live not too far away from each other and share the interest in playing Axis & Allies? By now it has turned into a good friendship and we meet regularly in Munich to have some games. Right now Axis & Allies D-Day is our favorite, but we also play Guadalcanal, Anniversary Edition and HBGs Battle of Midway, which is an awesome game. Just a few weeks ago I finally got a copy of Battle of the Bulge and Renegade Games is about to publish a North Africa campaign game with two scenarios (Rommels advance towards El Alamein and Operation Torch). So this brand is still alive and kicking.
Hey Christoph! Yes I do rem! Ha so glad you could you meet up with Adalwolf. That is really great news that you have shared. You are so right about OOB pieces vs. painted up pieces. It is a great hobby to immerse yourself into. Thanks so much for touching base. Glad to hear all is good on your end

Oh and yes I would love to play those other games but of course there is no one around me that has them lol. Maybe if I come to Munich I can indeed play!!
Nice video. The tank at the beginning is a KV5. Going to attempt some decals for the first time. This was helpful!
Hey Krogg…. Thanks for subscribing and your comment. Yes you are probably correct on the “reference” image I used for inspiration before painting up the sculpt. The actual sculpt is a KV-2 per HBGs site. You will love the decals. Just adds one more level of detail that makes any sculpt come alive! Good luck and have fun
Why do you need a secondary Primer when those Rust-Oleum Paints have Primer in them already? Thank you.
Hey Hogg… that is a great question. I have asked this to myself at one point as well. I think it helps to ensure full coverage of paint on the sculpt. I have found it easier to see “grey” poking through after you have sprayed the first coat of your primary color. Some pieces are hard to get full coverage because of the fine details of the sculpt and can be overlooked. I suppose you could skip that step all together.
Ok. Thank you. I prefer Rust-Oleum (Satins) as well. It is tough enough for outside furniture, so gaming pieces is a breeze for it to cover and protect. In the future, I plan to spay it in small glass bottles like Testors does so I can have an infinite variety of Custom Colors & Shades to mix for my own . . . . all pre- Primed an ready to go, as it were!!
@@HoggRidduhsounds interesting. Spray it in bottles? Please explain a tad more please
Yes, I purchased these Spray Paint accessories . . . . *_1)_* Uprok 2 finger wing adapters convert male spray paint cans to female from male. *_2)_* Needle Caps Graffiti Art Spray paint tips Bombing Trains Walls NYC. So, I can spray my Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover Paint into 20ml glass bottles. I also plan on making most of the Colors look Metallic like you did with that very nice Metallic Matte Evening Navy Blue. @@HoggRidduhwow! Ok mmmm I am going to have to look into this! Sounds ver interesting and thanks for sharing this info with me!
This is BY FAR the best Axis and Allies G40 map ever! I've bought it and I can STRONGLY recommend this to anyone! Not only does it look GORGEOUS, with all the colors and details, but it is also more space-efficient, and you can easily fit all your dudes in the most important territories that are often cluttered in the standard map. Thank you very much sir for your dedication and efforts, I can't tell how how much I appreciate this map. It's AWESOME!
OOooooo Man! Thank you so much for your review. Warms my heart to know that your next game play will be quite memorable. Have fun and enjoy!
@@Lt.Dan.. You're welcome! I showed some pictures of the board to my friends and they are digging the map too! It makes playing much more fun and engaging!
Where did you get the stands for your planes? What are they?
Hey bennickell…. I made them. Here is a video I created many moons ago describing what I did. I still use them today. I really like them. ua-cam.com/video/RotzkE7M-kA/v-deo.htmlsi=fOfcR_Xpo23dO0mC
Thanks Lt. Dan! I always love seeing a video like this from you - looking great! If you wanted to add 1 more color, I'd add a flesh color for the face and any other skin👍
MMMmmm... that might be a good call since I am NOT making my units look 100% since I am keeping the base colors as set by Sired to be able to identify the armies easily while playing. I will do that to my next units I am giving a face lift too... Japan. Will see how that looks then start implementing that for all. Thanks MT! Saw one of your last vids a few days ago... your pieces look amazing. I am sure they are inspiring others.
@@Lt.Dan.. Thanks Lt. Dan! It's interesting how we all inspire one another😉. I'm inspired by you - and the first inspiration came from Dtroy's wonderful videos from years ago👍
Unbelievably great job! I've just started dabbling in the world of miniatures painting and I really appreciate skill you demonstrate. Loved the animation at the end as well 😁
Hey Corporal Clegg! Glad to hear from you. Yes I am still learning for sure but I have come a long ways. This KV2 is one of my favorites on the table. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Cheers!

Hey that’s a great idea…. Will have to pick up some when o go there next time. Thanks for the tip MT!

Hey guys... I am back with another miniature painting video. This video is from the past BUT is a good one. Thought I would reload it to help gain a greater exposure to this hobby I have immersed myself into. Hoping to inspire others to to join in. Let me know what you think by adding a comment. if there is a particular unit you would like to see painted up just let me know. Thanks for stopping by...
This map is beautiful. Fantastic Job, mate. Very nice. Personally, I've always wanted India broken up into a few more territories to be a little more historical. I'd also love to see the UK broken up into England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Island. Oh well, better make my own map. Again, this is a work of art. Great Job!
Thank you sir. Well the territories are specific to the game…. By adding more territories would definitely effect gameplay for sure. I just added some visual historical stimulation to the game. Wanted to give an immersive feeling when playing. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers!
Welcome back. Great work as always!
Hey Smoke! Thanks and thanks. Good to hear from ya
The colors really stand out on the game map! Nice work. Glad to see you back 👍🏻
Thanks PC! thanks for stopping by and is always great to hear from you as well.
paint customization def enhances the enjoyment of the game! nothing like seeing Japan with its zero's and kates's and england with spitfires in camo pattern green!
I am with you Jose! Certainly enhances gameplay. That is my goal for this year is to touch units that do not have much going for them other than a base coat. Want to bring a subtle realism to each fighting force.
I really like the style of having a prominent color to identify the nation's forces quickly, and mixing in the detail of the boots, gun, helmet, etc. Great work!
Hey Cobra.... yes. I am with you. Although I have seen other's painted pieces and they were very nicely done (realistic) I found it very hard to identify who was who on the map. I have just chosen to work with the base color of each faction and then add a little bit of realism to each piece without going overboard on "perfection".
Just a tip... I first clean all of my units in warm water (1 drop of soap ) then I remove each unit while wearing rubber gloves and then drop them in a solution of isopropyl alcohol to remove any remaining hand grease/dirt. I then remove them from the alcohol wearing gloves and then drop them again into distilled water to remove the any alcohol ( wearing gloves ) then I let them air dry over night. ( prior to all of this cleaning each unit is magnatized ). I then use a light gray primer and do 2 light coats and then begin painting. When I am done painting the I use my air brush to apply a light layer of poly sealer so I can do a wash without having the wash ruin the paint. Then each unit is sealed with a satin poly clear coat twice. Your paint will stick much better on the units and not flake off you follow this process.
Hey Charles.... I have heard of doing what you do but have not seen the steps that you have provided. I will keep this in mind the next time I start from scratch. I have not had any issues though thus far with chipping of paint and so on. I can see how removing things you cannot see with the eye would help though. thanks for the tips
Hey guys... I am back with another miniature painting video. I am currently giving select pieces a face lift. I have really enjoyed immersing myself in this game with all the hobbies I have learned over the years and wish to inspire others to to join in. Let me know with a comment if there is a particular unit you would like to see painted up. Thanks for stopping by...
what is the difference between bbv and bbr?
Hi….. BBR (Bloodbath Rules) is the rule set or name of the variant that Siredblood created and BBV is the 5th version of the game. I just removed the R and replaced with the Roman numeral, “V”.
Also…. This variant is based off of Axis and Allies G40
@@Lt.Dan.. interesting just now hearing of these home rules. Looking at the forum I see a post referencing 5 game and went and is on 6.x or something already. I also cannot for the life of me find a full ruleset, do you happen to have links? Thanks!!!
yah it is great stuff. If you know G40 then there are a layer of rules on top of the ones you already know. Siredblood is in process in moving all of the download stuff to a discord community. Go to discord and look for the "Bloodbath" community. I am new to discord so do not know all the "ends and outs". Once you get into this group... there is a channel called "Bloodbath Essentials" and in there is an to download things. I hope this helps.
Out of box figures are the nicest. A surprise, actually! 😮
Thanks Z! Appreciate the comment. I am slowly upgrading all my forces as we speak. Will have more videos in the future but more step by step and less talking. I enjoy that
Awesome job! Definitely inspired to paint my miniatures now, thank you!!!
Thanks Chris! Glad you like and love it that I have inspired you. I enjoyed the quiet time painting and thinking. I have a whole bunch more that I need to paint now that I have my core set done. Just got done renovating my bunker. Need to make a video of that next!
Awesome work! I also am looking to purchase the digital file without the swastika and rising sun overlays as they seem to make it hard on our old eyes to see all of the territory borders. I have never purchased a map from Sired or you before so I can't send any kind of proof. Can I still buy it? Thank you! - John
Thank you for your compliment. Today I dont offer this without the swastika or rising sun. The only options I have are listed in the description. Combat miniatures does a one stop buy and print service. Is the best way to go instead of worrying about who and how to pay and print.
noted there were 3 different types to buy , confused as to witch one I want, maybe I just get all 3 !
Those kv have turned out incredible. As insurmountable as those the Germans encountered in June 41. There is some story of some immobilized KV2 that the Germans could not finish with for hours.
Thank you Alberto…. They are a few favorites I enjoy having on my table
Very good!! I was testing several black markers to outline the edge of the wooden tokens that I use for various uses... and I chose the same among Staedtler, Edding... the Sharpie, for the resounding black, and the versatile tip of the marker. The finish with paint and varnish... is already totally professional
Yes… I like them a lot!
The love at work for this game is incredible. Thanks for sharing. I already have the BB6 rules!
Thank you my friend…. Stay tuned I have more to share. Have been working 1.5 years on my bunker
I love the map and I bought it through Etsy. I live in Spain and I hope I won't have any problems receiving it or with customs. the problem is that i can't get the BBR rules of the game. I have seen many videos but the registration of the download web should not work. Congratulations on a fantastic job!!
Hello Alberto…. Thank you. You can download all of the BBR information from the DOWNLOADS section on the BBR site located at Siredblood.com/community. You will have to register to gain access. It is free to do so. Please note that I do not control that site. Thank you again for your support and kind words
@@Lt.Dan.. Thanks for the feedback. Today I received the shipping notice for the mat. Yes, I am registered but I have been waiting for several days for the web admin to register my profile. I think there are several users who sometimes have this problem. It will be time to wait, although it is surprising that they are not accessible elsewhere. I think it's a great customization job at all levels. All the best
@@JUKspn I am sorry to hear. I am currently away BUT this coming weekend I can make things available to you through my gdrive.
@@Lt.Dan.. Would be great! Thank you so much!
@@JUKspn Good morning... please send me your GMAIL email address and I will hook it up to my gdrive with all the downloads for BBR. Send to "thedano1965 AT GMAIL DOT COM"
An amazing job. I just commissioned one of your designs for the BBR version. I'll keep the info on the round token counters from another of your videos to apply it. I love seeing how people dedicate love and effort to doing a job that they enjoy and share with others. In my case I have prepared small wooden blocks with stickers of the units to replace all the figures. I can't access new units and with the blocks I can design anything. New cavalry units, paratroopers, marines... it's a lot of work but I enjoy it too. How can I get the rules of the BBR version (and the game aids) there is no way for the siredblood web admin to activate the profiles. Thanks again for sharing
Thank you Alberto
Dan, this map looks incredible. I'm a graphic designer myself, and I can appreciate the countless hours you have invested in this project. I hope one day to have a table that will fit this map, lol! I do have a question-love the propaganda poster imagery, but is not the artwork of Lord Kitchener on the right hand from a WW1 propaganda poster? Wouldn't you want all WW2 images?
Hey cam… thank you so much for your appreciation. I hope to inspire all, especially you ,to create knowing that I started from an idea in my head. And yes I wanted to keep all propaganda wwii themed. Are you speaking of the one German soldier in the collage of characters in the Indian Ocean? Great eye if that is the case! I just loved that one and had to include it. Thanks so much for calling it out. You are the first!
Hello all! Can someone tell me, if I can use this map with the Renegade Studios 1942 version? Thanks
Not sure what the board looks like for that a version BUT this one is specifically for G40 but you could look to see what that board looks like compared to G40
I'm on my way to play!! So amazing!! I'll need a room!😂🤣😂🏆🎯
Haha…. Thanks. You should see what I have done since that last video! I will have to make another video soon
@@Lt.Dan.. I'm a wood worker and you have done magic for your first try very impressive. Going to start my table, thanks for inspiring me!👋🎯🏆
@@Lt.Dan.. and I think you still have all your fingers so woodworking is your art obviously.
@@Happyfsscist33 wow thanks for that compliment. It’s amazing what you can learn on YT when you have a vision or a desire to accomplish something
@@Happyfsscist33 ha yah there were you few close calls and lessons learned on “note to self…. Do not do that again” 😅
Totally awesome!!!
Thanks!
Is there any wrong about Siam? At the start, I remember Imperial Japan controls Siam.
Not sure I understand. Japan has their rising sun roundel in Siam
Hey @lt. Dan I think I'm playing against you online right now. I just sacked Tokyo but you took Moscow
Ahhhh nuts! This could never happened 😂😅
@@Lt.Dan.. well if it is you, we'll played sir!
@@thenedley0913 haha no it isn’t me but funny that you thought of me. Good luck!
Ended up going 22 rounds and the Germans were too powerful. I resigned instead of drawing it out further.
Aztec eagles 🦅 battles on your map ?
Hey Cesar… Show me where I should place some and I will consider for the next release
Awesome. Well the the squadron flew 96 combat missions. They helped bomb Luzon in the Philippines and Formosa .they supported the U.S 25th infantry division fifty three times. Also a dive bombing giant the port of Karenko. Totaling putting 30,000 Japanese troops out of action
Good to see you're still at it!
Always adding more! Next release will be most likely mid 2024 since sired has stopped all changes. My next release will be a biggie is all I can say 😍
How strong are the magnets? Strong enough to work through whatever map material plus a sheet of plexiglass?
Hey Andy …. Well depends on the thickness of your plexiglass. You might have to UP your sizes because of the plexi. I use APEX magnets and they will tell you the pull force for the magnets. Also when I was designing my table I researched various gauges of metal and what pull force of magnets I needed to make it all work. Don’t have that website since that was a long time ago but you can do a little research and make a good estimate and buy a small quantity to test things. That’s what I did to get dip my toes into it
@@Lt.Dan.. thanks for the info! What is your map printed on? I’m mainly worried about not scratching it but the main purpose is I’m planning on making a classic map with magnetized pieces and framing it for my dad to hang in his man cave so really, scratching shouldn’t be that big of an issue and I may not need the plexiglass over that map.
@@andybates2966 u bet! The material I print on now is super smooth 15oz vinyl. I no longer have to spray a polyurethane coating over this material which is awesome. BUT…. I have sanded ALL the bottoms of my pieces to ensure there are no “gotchas”. As a side note ORIGINALLY I too was going to hang my map on the wall and frame it but I challenged myself with building the table. Still want to have my map on the wall framed…. Would be cool
@@Lt.Dan.. thanks for the info! I’m hoping to do this for my dads 60th birthday in July and if I manage to pull it off I’ll post it on siredbloods site!
@@andybates2966 awesome can’t wait to see!
I was wondering how do I purchase a download or a map from you? I live in Canada thanks
Hi qumonk…. All the info is in the description. Thanks for stopping by
Music and map are fire! Like always!
Thanks brother. Appreciate you stopping by and Happy Holidays!
This map is amazing. I have built a custom table for the YG global 1940 map but I have to try this new map on my custom table. I will order it through the combat miniatures..One question concerning the BBR rules. Where can I get them? Thank you.
Hey Juan… thanks for dropping by. You can download everything you need including the rulebook at Siredblood.com/community (then go to the downloads section) OR you can purchase a lot of things at Combat miniatures too including the rulebook.
Finally I received this map today! Great quality from Combat Miniatures. One thing that it seems I missed when ordered this map is that is not fully compatible with BBR V.. That’s on me but my question is what do I need to add to make it BBR V compatible? Thanks for your help
@@Navarone_1943 oh man that’s too bad. There are many things added or changed. Would be too many to cover. See if you can send your map back to combat miniatures and then pay the shipping for combat miniatures to have the BBR map sent to you. Worth a try I guess.
Perfecto!! Ive not been interested in bloodbath, but now I have to get the G40 map. Nice work Lt. Dan. I'll be ordering through combat miniatures.
Great news PC. Has been quite awhile since I have heard from you. Glad to see you are still at it. Thanks for the interest
@@Lt.Dan.. Yeah, its been an eventful and busy year for me. Plan to get back into my channel. I just purchased your G40 w/o color map. I will have to do an open box or unrolled map video!
