    I am LIVID that this feature is only in the Pro version! If any of you are like me and you're using Artist or Elements, better cough up the money to Steinberg! This should be a basic feature in any DAW, GUESS NOT FOR THIS ONE!

    • @FromZeroToStudio
      @FromZeroToStudio 2 місяці тому

      It looks like this feature is available for Cubase Artist and Cubase Pro, but may not be available for Cubase Elements. A workaround for this would be to save a project template and import your tracks into that new project using the template. Not always ideal, but hope it helps! -Justin

    hello! how's it going? I wanted to ask you, because when I open a template, and import a midi drum kit, the Cubase tempo is out of sync, it's strange because normally the midi is coupled to the tempo of the project, greetings!

      Hey there! Go into your Cubase preferences and down to MIDI. Look for the option “Ignore Master Track Events On Merge”. Make sure this is selected and it should import your MIDI track synced to the project tempo. Hope this helps! -Justin

    I did this same thing recently, a friend owns a Line 6 Uber Metal distortion pedal (has a bad rep btw) and said that he feels really happy with the tone. No doubt, plugging it and playing on an amp, the pedal has its own charm. But come recording on the DAW, showed him both raw guitar tracks (+Amp Sim) and the same riff recorded directly with his Uber Metal pedal. I had both tracks plugged in to a Libra Cab Sim. My friend did not realize this at first but I eventually have him listen several times and have him realize for himself that the raw guitar tracks with Cab Sim sounds a lot cleaner and more professional. And yeah, the wave forms are SO MUCH EASIER to work with when you can see the transients clearly.

    • @FromZeroToStudio
      @FromZeroToStudio 2 місяці тому

      Many times, guitar tones may sound great on their own, but in the context of the full, finished mix, a better tone suits the song. It can be a hard pitch, especially if a guitarist has spent a lot of time crafting their sound, but you should do what’s best for the song. Sometimes that takes a side by side comparison to hear the difference and make a decision. Glad you had a good experience with it! -Justin

      Awesome! They are definitely a great tool to have on hand. If you pick up a pair, many people have recommend that you listen to about 2 hours of music to get used to the emulations. It may help to be sitting in front of your studio monitors to help trick the brain that you’re “not listening to headphones”. For me, I got lucky and it kind of just “clicked” the first time I tried them. No wizardry needed haha!

    The easiest way to achieve this is by using the inspector to raise and lower the offset delay by a few milliseconds and pitch by a few cents. Thus making one track higher and earlier, and the other lower and later. It takes seconds to do it this way.

      Oh for sure, and thanks for mentioning that! With every DAW being different, I wanted to make sure the general concept was accessible to everyone regardless of their setup. I personally Like to use the Waves Doubler plugin if I’m unable to create a second track from repeating parts. -Justin

    Bounce the selected audio tracks to a new track (keep the originals grouped and minimized if something needs changing at some point). Am not a fan of chopping audio which the producer deliberately left there, it interacts with each other, you're changing the outcome this way.

    • @FromZeroToStudio
      @FromZeroToStudio 3 місяці тому

      Valid point! In many cases, overlaps may be a creative production element that should be left alone. In this instance, the piano part was recorded in chunks and was meant to sound like one continuous part. Leaving the overlaps would have caused unwanted dissonance in the chord changes. The overall message behind this video is to set yourself up with manageable mixing projects. Oftentimes, a project may come in with 5 lead vocal tracks where sections were recorded separately and there are no overlapping parts. By condensing these down to one track as if it were performed in a single take, it makes for a better overall mixing experience! Great add on the option to “bounce the selected tracks to a new track”! It’s nice to have a backup at the ready if needed. -Justin

      100%! The others are great to get a quick “feel” of what it sounds like with a double. With remote mixing projects, there have been cases where I’m unable to get another track from the artist for whatever reason. In that case, I will use the third option as much as I can. However, there are sometimes certain notes or phrases that don’t repeat in the song and I’ll typically reach for a doubler plug-in only for those phrases. They are usually pretty quick parts and the false double can be unnoticeable if you adjust the settings just right.

    Would you bother adding a bit of humanize on the velocity and now position? I'm talking random changes of 0-10 ticks of random ness?

    • @FromZeroToStudio
      @FromZeroToStudio 3 місяці тому

      Great question! It honestly depends on which drum sampler you’re using. If it has “round robin” samples (multiple samples for each velocity and plays a different sample each time), then it will already sound like a different hit from the previous, and adjusting the velocity is not necessarily needed. If it doesn’t have “round robin” or is just one-shot samples, then I would adjust the velocities a small amount to make the volumes slightly different. Just be careful not to adjust too extreme of an amount, or you could start triggering the next tier of softer/harder samples and they might sound out of place. In that case, I would experiment with dragging the velocity up and down to find where those sample groupings change, and then you’ll know which velocity range you have to stay within. This of course is all in the context of those straightforward drum hits that aren’t really different, like a snare on 2 & 4. If there is a distinctively softer note, or a build on the toms, etc, then always adjust those velocities as needed. Which drum sampler are you using? -Justin

    Hi Justin, probably the "Drum Editor" gives a more informative view, because of the named instruments along with the key naming. As well as the coloured gems shows the applied velocity (if you set it on the "event colours). In addition with the "Pitch visibility" you can easily filter the view to "show drum sounds with events" which gives you a even more efficient overview to your applied drum hits. Regards

    • @FromZeroToStudio
      @FromZeroToStudio 5 місяців тому

      Thank you for sharing this Cubase tip! The Drum Editor is very similar to the generic MIDI Key Editor as it shows the colors of applied velocity and the ability to show drum sounds with events (labeled “show pitches with events” in the Key Editor). However, being able to see the instrument or drum name in place of the piano roll is definitely helpful for drum programming! For me, it’s become muscle memory at this point where each drum note is on the piano roll with Steven Slate Drums specifically, but having a visual reference is still invaluable, especially when switching to different drum instruments. Not sure why I haven’t really used it before?! I suppose if you have a system that works efficiently, stick to it… until someone comes along and shows you how to make it even more efficient haha! The only immediate issue I noticed in the Drum Editor is that the MIDI mapping and names of each instrument may not line up correctly with the virtual instrument you are using. For instance, the hihat was listed as a Conga. This can be easily fixed by changing the names as needed and saving a new mapping for that instrument. With a few minutes of setup time that specific virtual instrument will be properly mapped and ready to use for future projects! Great insight on the Cubase Drum Editor! Thanks again for sharing! -Justin

      Thank you! That really means so much to hear! Maybe one day the algorithms will just "click" haha. Either way, I enjoy making these videos and I'm happy that others are finding them helpful. I appreciate you! -Justin
