Does this method also apply to the fluegalhorn?
Absolutely!
A few of these studies have been picked for my all region tryouts this year, so excited to learn these, they sound absolutley amazing
Thanks so much! I’m glad this is helpful!
I love you
I love you, too.
Hi Chris ! Could you make a video about tonguing for play Baroque Music ? Thanks
lol I could not get it but I am also a beginner 😊
any chance i could get a tutorial for this on tuba?
lol!
Thank you so much, this helps a ton 🙏
So glad to hear, and thanks for watching!!
This helped so much!
I’m glad! Thanks for watching!!
life saver for my upcoming band assignment
So glad to hear. Thanks for watching!!
Trumpet players can also consider volunteering for first responder funerals. My old boss was a Navy veteran and played the trumpet. A good friend of his was a police officer who died. He played taps at his funeral. You would be surprised by how many police departments would be happy to have your help.
So good to know. Thanks for this!!
SFX
This study sounds very beautiful... a peaceful melody. And you play beautifully!
Thanks so much. That means a lot!
Great video and fantastic playing! Thank you for posting this one and I look forward to checking out all of your others.
Thank you so much for watching!
Thanks so much for all your videos, Chris! I'd like to know what that very short piece of leadpipe your buzzing on at around 2:55 is - is this something you had made or something off the shelf? I think it could be really useful for me. Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching! Wiff Rudd has a book call Collaborative Practice Concepts that has some leadpipe exercises in it, among lots of other stuff. It's excellent and I recommend it!
There has been much told about the chipped note at the JFK ceremony with statements like "A Bugler's Tear." In some interview, he said he didn't even have a recollection of it. A good player will correct quickly. But I've always wondered if he really didn't recall that hiccup.
Interesting! When I chip, I always remember!! :)
VERY nice sounding of it. I'm a member of Bugles Across America and appreciate when the correct score is shown, and it is played correctly. Mainly this means playing notes 7,8 and 10,11 and 13,14 as straight eighth notes instead of as a dotted eighth and a sixteenth. (Marines and Marine veterans - but not in all cases - playing the dotted eighth and sixteenth.) For some reason, almost every time you hear it in a TV show or movie it is done incorrectly. Even in shows like NCIS and others who have military advisors and should know better. A subjective comment is how long to hold the final note. I hold it just a little less long. I think if too long it distracts from the body of the call and starts to take on a life of its own.
Thanks so much for watching and reaching out! I think that there are certain standards for taps like you mentioned, but there is also room for a little personal touch. I'm a member of Bugles Across America as well! Great organization!
@@ChrisWilsonTrumpet True. On the other hand, Frank Sinatra counseled you should do the music as written. But that's a big reason orchestras have conductors. They put THEIR personal touch to the score. For example, in playing Gershwin's American in Paris, there is lively solo hat picks up at bar 57 and one conductor might want you to play in a "can can" style and another in a "jazz" style. It is the extremes that I think are wrong and if I trot out singing the National Anthem at ball games, I'm sure you have heard it absolutely murdered (by somebody making the song about them and not the object of the song). There used to be an example at the BAA site (can't find it now, but the fellow was wearing a uniform with a beret) where he held the last note for over 10 seconds. Starting to get to the point where you might need circular breathing. Just ridiculous and I couldn't believe it was on the BAA site. Just fine until that last absurd long note.
I'm getting a trumpet in the mail in a few days and have been practicing this for a couple days. I can't wait to play. I've always wanted to learn the trumpet and now I'm finally doing so.
Awesome! You're going to love it!
Hey I have that book and there's a ton of great stuff in there
Absolutely!! Thanks for watching!
If playing for a funeral of a Marine, do you use the Marines' dotted rhythm in the middle section?
That's a great question!! I would. Best wishes to you!
Tysm
Absolutely! 🙏 for watching!
I find it helpful to use fingers 2, 3 and 4 instead of 1, 2, and 3 on some exercises. This'll also develop the pinky finger for piccolo stuff
Nice!
It’s not working I’m trying and it not working does it matter if I have big lips??
No problem….I have big lips too. 😊
Your mastery of the trumpet is truly inspiring. Its trumpet players like you that keep me playing.
That’s so nice! Keep working and good things will happen. Thanks again for watching my videos!
Brush tongue?
Brush Tongue = light articulation.... This works well when trying to build the articulaton around the sound when you first integrate articulation. In other words--not letting the articulation get in the way so the sound production.
Love the high quality edition of the video. It´s really enjoyable!!!
Thanks 🙏 so much!!
What is the tempo you are playing
Somewhere around 8th note=72-80
I'm having trouble at 1:44. I have to play this part for MS all state auditions but it's too fast for me. By any chance, do you have any tips or suggestions?
Thanks so much for reaching out.... Slow practice here is important. Too many times we get ahead of ourselves and good old fashioned metronome practice significantly under tempo is key. Once you master at a painfully slow tempo, bump it up 4-8 clicks until you get it to tempo.
@@ChrisWilsonTrumpeti'll try practicing in slow tempo's. Thank you for the advice!
i’m in 9th grade and my band instructor expects me (the only first trumpet) to play this note casually (i’m normally a 2nd or 3rd trumpet)
Oh wow! For jazz band? What is your normal range that you feel comfortable with?
I just started learning how to play the trumpet. I practice and practice and practice Taps. I noticed that if the embecure is not on point, the sound won't sound smooth. To me, it sounds crunchy if the embecure isn't right. My trumpet teacher was impressed. Anyway, thank you for your video and your tips on how to play Taps. Your video brought tears to my eyes. I am so grateful to all those who serve this great country. God bless the USA.
Thanks so much for watching! I'm wishing you the absolute best on your trumpet adventure. If there is ever help that you need, don't hesitate to reach out. And thinks for your kind works about service.
My bad

Fantastic!
Thanks so much!!
Great interview Chris, I’ve never met Wiff but I have read side by side and even though I’m not a “teacher” at the moment it has influenced how I think about leading the section in the brass. A great book for anyone out there.
@michaelbrest Thanks so much!!
Hey Mike....Thanks so much for watching! Wiff is wonderful and Side by Side is amazing. I hope you get a chance to meet him someday. Wishing you all the best!
To buzz or not to buzz this is the question !!!
I’m a buzzer! Particularly the day after a lot of playing. I use a mp buzz to loosen things up a little bit. Just a few minutes of buzzing.
Wow! Beautiful sound!
Thank you, Max!
I’ve always’d wondered the fingering for pedal tones in a Bb Trumpet
It doesn’t really matter what the fingering is down there. I just like to be consistent with the fingering up an octave.
3:56 bd audition start
What would be your approach to maintaining good tone while practicing, while being nervous before a performance, or just having tired chops?
Good question. I would say that being able to maintain a soft and relaxed sound in every scenario will build your consistency in sound. Also, having a strong concept of what you want to sound like and chasing the sound that is in your ear. Being over prepared for your performance brings confidence and endurance.
@@ChrisWilsonTrumpet 🙌🙌🙌🙏🙏🙏
Thanks Chris great advice
Thank you!!
I play military bugle so this is also great for me. Thanks for sharing. ❤
Great! So glad to hear!!!
Thank you for watching!
Which f did you start on? First space? I noticed you never used the 4th valve, so was it the higher F? which leadpipe did you use? B flat of A? thanks.
I start with the F one octave higher than 1&4 F. I mostly play on the A side. Hope this helps!
So basically imitate buzz lightyear
Yessss!
Awesome video. I recently ran across a couple of titles from Chris Gekker's including 15 studies for Piccolo Trumpet and Endurance Drills for performance skills. I was not aware of this routine, but I will be incorporating it into my summer work outs now. I have been working through the Reinhardt Routines and I have been seeing some progress in my tone and range but I think this will add a more technically challenging layer. I hope I can remain consistent and work through this routine for the rest of the summer into September. Looking forward to your update.
Great!! Keep me updated how it’s going! Wishing you the absolute best!!
I didn't know that the Marines play a dotted rhythm in the middle section. These are great tips Thank you.
Thanks so much for watching!
Yes. That's the exception. And also, how it is almost always played on TV and in movies.
THANK U
Thank you so much for watching!
Beautiful as always!!!!!
Thank you! 😊
