Travelling Turtle
United Kingdom
Приєднався 12 вер 2021
Hi, I'm Jo. I occasionally do silly travelling adventures across the UK and Europe, chronicle them on Twitter, and then turn them into videos.
Sometimes, the adventures go a bit viral www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-58297172.
The Daily Mail once called me 'Twitter's answer to Phileas Fogg.' www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-10679051/Man-embarks-epic-j.html
I didn't know Twitter needed an answer to Phileas Fogg.
You can see a map of all the journeys on this channel here: u.osmfr.org/m/1070764/

How far WEST can I get from the Prime Meridian by PUBLIC TRANSPORT in 24 hours?
Last year we went east from the Greenwich Meridian...so the obvious follow up - how far WEST can we get, by surface public transport, in 24 hours?
Join Mrs Turtle and I as we head out into the August murk on an epic adventure to the edge of Europe.

I tried to get to the END OF EUROPE in 24 hours...by PUBLIC TRANSPORT #Atlantic24
Переглядів 21 тис.3 місяці тому
Cabo da Roca is the most westerly point in mainland Europe. On a handful of days of the year, train, coach and bus timetables line up well enough to theoretically mean you can get there from London St Pancras in 24 hours. Join Mrs Turtle and myself as we head off to find out if the timetables are correct...or if the public transport gods have different plans for us.

Can Mrs Turtle and I string together buses and trains to get from Ireland's most southerly bus stop at Baltimore to the most northerly at Malin Head in 24 hours? Will we get blown away by Storm Kathleen? And will Ireland get a new Taoiseach before we reach the end of the journey? Errata: Ulster does of course have 9 counties, not 7 as confidently stated at 28:45. Music listing: 06:25 JS Bach - ...

If you could start anywhere, anytime, what's the highest number of English counties you can visit by bus in 24 hours? I reckon it's 14. Join Mrs Turtle and I as we head off into the freezing February night on an awful lot of buses to try to prove the theory right. There's a route map of this and all my other challenges at www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1qpGQYhknIpAk7BVp01lUdQjDBH12e_k&usp=shari...

Where would you get to if you started from Greenwich’s Prime Meridian and went east by ground-level public transport for 24 hours? In theory: almost to Ukraine. Join Mrs Turtle and myself as we test out the practice. Want to know how much this adventure cost? There’s a breakdown at 40:00!
Can I cross Wales BY BUS in a day? #Cymru24

Wales is a country the size of Wales, so this makes it ideal for a quick public transport challenge. Can Uncle Turtle and I travel from the country's most southerly bus stop to the most northerly one before the buses run out for the night?
Can I cross Germany in a day for €3.27? #Germany24

Germany has launched the €49 Deutschlandticket to let you travel anywhere by public transport for a month. The catch - you can only use it on local trains and buses. Can I travel over 1,000km from Germany's most southerly public transport stop, in an idyllic Alpine valley, all the way to the most northerly, on the North Sea, in 24 hours using the Deutschlandticket? Paris is worth a bus... You can travel by train from London to Paris in a couple of hours, but where's the fun in that? Join me and Mrs Turtle as we set off on a stormy spring day to see if you can travel from Charing Cross to Notre Dame entirely by local bus (and a ferry, obviously) in 24 hours.

In the difficult second album after #bus24, comes the obvious follow-up, #train24. Starting from London St Pancras, I'm trying to find the furthest you can get, as the crow flies, by train, before the 24 hours is up. (The links below contain spoilers about where I got to, obviously, in case you want to watch the video first!) Route map: www.arcgis.com/apps/instant/imageryviewer/index.html?appid...

Just how far can you get from central London by local bus in 24 hours? Join me as, for some reason, I leave Charing Cross at 3am to find out. #bus24
Was not expecting _The Wire_ from a Turtle video. Good show.
Thank you!
Great to see you both back! Another interesting adventure, great commentary, interesting context and some stunning visuals. Thank you.
Thanks so much! Delighted you enjoyed it.
Another fine video my friend 👍Good to see your use of Betjeman too. I so miss him as Poet Laureate! 😃
Thank you so much! Glad to have a fellow Betjeman fan.
I'm thinking of doing the cheapest way challange. What's the cheapest way to get from London - Brighton. SL6, 64, 409, 270. Total = £7.50
I didn't see any Dutch buses on the ferry, I did see a Belgian bus (De Zigeuner is indeed in Dutch, but it's a famous Belgian company with a slightly politically incorrect name, these days), and an Austrian bus (Herburger is Austrian, but to be fair, I had to look it up as well). And of course you are Swifties ;)
Isn't Neustadt where the Great Escapers gathered?
Top notch stuff, as usual.
Thank you so much!
I used to work 5 miles away from my house here on Anglesey. If I wanted to be at work at 6pm at almost £6 return, I'd need to get the 3.30pm bus at the latest as the busses didn't turn up and there was no way of finding out when it would turn up as the live map was fake. The late bus usually didn't turn up. If you rang the bus station in Bangor, you got verbally abused. I used to regularly get picked up by the police as the A5 was an incredibly dangerous place to walk due to the lack of footpath. They eventually threatened to arrest me if I kept walking on the road. So thanks to arriva and their absolutely overpriced shit services, I had to quit my job. It's a shame as there's very few opportunities on Anglesey for work. I honestly don't know where the idea of a great transport system in north Wales comes from. The people who live here definitely disagree.
Sorry to hear all that! My experience of buses on Anglesey (including on a break there last weekend) has been pretty good - barring the late bus in this video, but I appreciate the experience of an occasional visitor is not as representative as a regular user!
Embarassed to say I didn't know the most western part of Ireland is west of Portugal 🙈
You aren’t alone!
Interesting idea to make comparisons from a book written during the reign of the mustachioed art-school reject!
7:07 🎵 “Watford Gap! The ketchup- covered jewel of Northamptonshire…!” 🎵 ❤
Celebrate in the English fashion, fish, chips, 10 pints and a fight in the car park 😂😂😂
Another feast for the eyes and ears. Thanks!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
As a person from Netherlands inreally like your historical insights.
Thank you!
Oh joy. A turtle expedition.
11:30 three cars???!? I can't tell you how jealous I am, I'm always packed in like a sardine with two cars.
Sorry you always loose at the Transport for Wales multiple unit roulette wheel.
These trips are great but I implore you to invest in a better microphone. The audio is so muffled which does a disservice to your narration.
Excellent use of the Italian Concerto. Thank you.
Thank you!
Interesting & amazing! Im into these challenges of adventures by bus going as far as possible across the country & even beyond.
Thanks so much!
Peig Sayers, a name that drove fear through any school pupil in Ireland.
Yet another fine video my friend. Nicely reminded of my first trip to Ireland, way back in the late 80s now. Caught the ever so rough Swansea to Cork ferry (now defunct?) to Ringaskiddy and by a combination of train, bus and hitch made it to all points further west. End of May this way, so got soaked every day! Highlight was a must-have-been 45 minute hitched ride with a local. We had a fine conversation but I didn't get a single word he was saying...!
Thank you so much! I mourn the loss of the Swansea-Cork ferry…
ah, but Québec is very very French.! Enjoyable video.
Thank you!
Excellent ❤ loving your body of work so far .....please continue with your superlative journeys😊😊😊😊
great script
Thank you!
There's always one isnt there! That rancidly impatient Mini driver getting in the way of the bus manouver around 14 minutes.
Whenever i see Retford, i say it in Jim Laker's dulcet tones so it comes out as Rettt foott.
On the x22, express is more of a future promise! 😂😂
The head on the print was a little too big, it should be above the harp
Fair. Was still a decent pint!
The supposedly 'intelligent' algorithms YT utilises are a falsehood, imagine my delight today finding this 'new' production, a year late. Your unique ability to select independent travel arrangements would once upon a time have made Thomas Cook's agents very wealthy but as we see today, what's a travel agent? Your encyclopedic knowledge is exemplary but please enrol on a short course of Yorkshire Dialects, we never put an aitch at the front of the Bronte town!
Thank you so much! Delighted you enjoyed it. As a Leeds born-and-bred person, my inability to pronounce Yorkshire towns appropriately is alarming really…
@@travelling_turtle not a bit of it, there definitely is a trait in what used to be called 'classes' of persons, to annunciate differently. How else would Shaw have entertained the World so royally but for the antics/accents of Eliza. Anyways, being an ex chorister has its downsides, like being picky about anything aural sadly! Keep up the superb productions using public transport, something so obviously a Yorkshire trait!
Continuing my feast of bus journeys Westward is fascinating 😊😊😊😊 Part one excellent Part two I'm sure will be epic 😅😅😅
A repeat viewing today! Like a fine wine, it improves with age.
Cheers! 🍷
Well done for getting to Dunmore Head in good time, even though you couldn't get that last boat. 10:56 17:02 Summat wrong with some of your longitudes there. There are only 60' in a degree and 60" in 1'.
Thank you! You are correct, there is an error there, sorry!
Thank you. I can't improve on @Forcefield23's words below. More, please.
The VDL SB200s are solid buses and 257 is lovely to drive on the T12.
A narrated bus tour of England? Doesnt sound promising does it? Au contraire, absolutely brilliant.
Ha! I'm from the county only there for cricket!
Middlesex will rise again! Perhaps.
@@travelling_turtle yeah we just need a new Brearley, Gatting, Radley, Daniel, Emburey, Edmonds, etc.
Another masterpiece. The fact you didn't make, to me, is neither here nor there!
Thank you so much!
6:33 - speaking (or typing) as a native of Carlisle's sister borough in Pennsylvania, it's fun to get a glimpse of the original. The cathedral and the big stone prison in the center of town are more than a little reminiscent, respectively, of our First Lutheran Church and old county prison, which I've heard were modeled after the Carlisle UK buildings, and, ironically, are caddy-corner from each other in our town. Hope to visit in person sometime! Enjoyable journey as always, despite the loss of your traveling companion.
Fascinating that there are ‘replica’ buildings in Carlisle, PA! It’s a nice little town, Carlisle, Cumbria, and definitely worth a visit. A bit off the usual tourist trail but near to some very lovely scenery.
@@travelling_turtle The Carlisle PA prison DEFINITELY was modeled after the Carlisle Cumbria building. i.pinimg.com/originals/43/1f/2e/431f2e5ef1b672fbcaef2f63885ebb94.jpg The Carlisle PA Lutheran church probably was only inspired by the Cumbria cathedral, but given that it's made of the same material, it has more than a passing resemblance. sah-archipedia.org/sites/default/files/pictures/full/PA-02-CU8-002.jpg
@@travelling_turtle The prison definitely was modeled after the Cumbria prison; the church, less so, although it's made of the same material as the Cumbria cathedral, which might not sound like much to go on, but most of the older buildings (especially churches) in Carlisle PA are made from the same grey limestone, so a sandstone brick church stands out. Looks SIMILAR but less ornate and rococo than "theirs."
Would love to see a London to The Scillies as fast as possible.
As the Irish Armed Forces have a base on the Curragh you'd think they'd be best placed to find the missing WW2 german bomb.
Failed so far! Need to bring in the Bundeswehr - they find hundreds of unexploded WW2 bombs every year…
@@travelling_turtle not sure they find them on their own, most are dug up during construction of a new building or something. Same in Belgium, 100s of pieces of ammo are found by farmers yearly, just during ploughing. Most are just left on the side of the road for the army specialists to collect them...
21:05 if you’re curious, the airport bus routes in Montreal and Edmonton also carry the route number 747, and those are just the ones I know of.
Glad it is not just a British flight of whimsy!
00:40 Western Greenland is another contender. I'm not sure about Pitcairn Island. And of course, going South, rather than West, we have British Antarctic Territory, which does have a British base from which you can cast a vote.
Subscribed after finding this video. 🙂👍 Iceland is further West in Europe, and Greenland is administratively Europe. And there is French Guiana which is classed as a french department, though definitely not Europe. For these journeys, you could have flown. Aircraft are forms of public transport. Going East, you could reach Australia, and going West you could reach the Pacific Ocean. But airline travel is nowhere close to being as interesting as your chosen modes of transport! Thanks for these videos.
Thank you for the subscription! Very, very hard to define Europe for these purposes. Parts of Iceland could be considered geologically North America. And if you go on to administrative Europe, it is a very big scope indeed!
Can you imagine how imposing Conwy Castle once was, with its white walls?
Yes! I rather wish they would decide to return one Welsh castle to its whitewashed state.
Ireland is beautiful, a shame the globalists are determined to destroy it by importing hundreds of thousands of violent people
Jo....Thankyou so much for your 24 hour bus series they have saved me from the wee small hours of boredom as I fight off the pain of a frozen shoulder...😢😢But truly I am your number 1 fan of local bus journeys, this episode being especially interesting as you passed through my home County of Derbyshire - which I boast a great knowledge of bus services - since receiving my bus pass !!!! Please continue this wonderful series 😊😊😊😊😊..Btw I love the historic and funny anecdotes.....Derbyshire dumpling included !😂😂
Thank you so much - glad you enjoyed, and hope the shoulder improves soon!
I reckon you enjoy planning and completing these journeys as much as we do watching them. You present such a positive view of the simple task of taking public transport. Thank you.
Ha, busted - yes I do! Thank you!
Wow, I just looked up East Midlands Airport on Flight24, you weren't joking about freight. Had no idea.
In 1968, I travelled with my car on the night ferry from Dún Laoghaire to Holyhead. It wasn't a ro-ro ferry but one where your vehicle was craned from quayside to ship and vice-versa. The ship arrived in Holyhead just after midnight but you couldn't get your car back till the next morning. So I had a peaceful night tied up alongside in a wonderful old-fashioned cabin. All polished wood and brass.
Swings and roundabouts: easier to get your car on, less polished wood…
