Travelling Turtle
United Kingdom
Приєднався 12 вер 2021
Hi, I'm Jo. I occasionally do silly travelling adventures across the UK and Europe, chronicle them on Twitter, and then turn them into videos.
Sometimes, the adventures go a bit viral www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-58297172.
The Daily Mail once called me 'Twitter's answer to Phileas Fogg.' www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-10679051/Man-embarks-epic-j.html
I didn't know Twitter needed an answer to Phileas Fogg.
You can see a map of all the journeys on this channel here: u.osmfr.org/m/1070764/

I tried to get to the END OF EUROPE in 24 hours...by PUBLIC TRANSPORT #Atlantic24
Cabo da Roca is the most westerly point in mainland Europe. On a handful of days of the year, train, coach and bus timetables line up well enough to theoretically mean you can get there from London St Pancras in 24 hours.
Join Mrs Turtle and myself as we head off to find out if the timetables are correct...or if the public transport gods have different plans for us.

Can Mrs Turtle and I string together buses and trains to get from Ireland's most southerly bus stop at Baltimore to the most northerly at Malin Head in 24 hours? Will we get blown away by Storm Kathleen? And will Ireland get a new Taoiseach before we reach the end of the journey? Errata: Ulster does of course have 9 counties, not 7 as confidently stated at 28:45. Music listing: 06:25 JS Bach - ...

If you could start anywhere, anytime, what's the highest number of English counties you can visit by bus in 24 hours? I reckon it's 14. Join Mrs Turtle and I as we head off into the freezing February night on an awful lot of buses to try to prove the theory right. There's a route map of this and all my other challenges at www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1qpGQYhknIpAk7BVp01lUdQjDBH12e_k&usp=shari...

Germany has launched the €49 Deutschlandticket to let you travel anywhere by public transport for a month. The catch - you can only use it on local trains and buses. Can I travel over 1,000km from Germany's most southerly public transport stop, in an idyllic Alpine valley, all the way to the most northerly, on the North Sea, in 24 hours using the Deutschlandticket? Paris is worth a bus... You can travel by train from London to Paris in a couple of hours, but where's the fun in that? Join me and Mrs Turtle as we set off on a stormy spring day to see if you can travel from Charing Cross to Notre Dame entirely by local bus (and a ferry, obviously) in 24 hours.

In the difficult second album after #bus24, comes the obvious follow-up, #train24. Starting from London St Pancras, I'm trying to find the furthest you can get, as the crow flies, by train, before the 24 hours is up. (The links below contain spoilers about where I got to, obviously, in case you want to watch the video first!) Route map: www.arcgis.com/apps/instant/imageryviewer/index.html?appid...

Fantastic video. Thank you.
Thank you!
Lovely video as always.
Thank you!
Again one of your videos has helped me with a related trip. 4 days walking from YHA Ambleside entirely using public transport. Used thee 555 every day, 599 for essential gingerbread shopping and X6 today get to Grange-over-Sands for the stunning view from Hampsfell.
Wonderful! I love that Youth Hostel. And the gingerbread!
Thank you for the inspiration, I watched this and decided to do my own trip with the new £2 cap. What a great day out it was! ua-cam.com/video/FbaUeSGlM7g/v-deo.htmlsi=4Oa2nhery19Jkt-w
I loved seeing the pantiles on here! I worked as an actor promoting the revitalised spring and the mineral water when it opened last year! nice to finally they've finally got the vending machine installed!
Ah, shame you weren’t still there! Love the Pantiles.
Really enjoying these, my daughter and I watched two back to back this evening even thought we're 100 miles apart. Armchair travel is a lot less fraught than the real thing. May I ask what app you use to follow the progress of the trains? Is it the DB one?
Delighted to be providing family entertainment! Yes, the DB app when in Germany is pretty good for real time progress. There’s a PKP app that I was using to track the train to Warsaw - it’s a bit basic, but does the job.
Another good one. We were at Viller-sur-Mer in Normandy last week and were surprised to see a sign for the Greenwich Meridian - there's even a Rue du Meridien! Surprised because EVERYBODY knows - well the French at least - that the Prime Meridian should go through Paris. 😄 As you pass under the Greenwich Meridian at Stratford International spare a thought for the missing Time Spiral clock. It used to stand on the Greenwich Meridian outside of Stratford Station and on a good night you would have seen the green laser light that shines out from the Observatory pass overhead. Sadly it was moved in order to make way for the entrance to Westfield shopping mall - I had the dubious responsibility for having it taken down when I worked at Newham BC. After a while languishing in a council depot it was found a new home outside Maryland tube station at 0° 0'23.08"E or thereabouts.
Thank you! I am amazed that the French acknowledge Greenwich… I must go and pay a visit to the sculpture in Maryland…
Very enjoyable - my daughter introduced me to this channel after an unfortunate experience we had with Deutsche Bahn . . . What is it they say? “If your life always goes according to plan, you rarely take Deutsche Bahn! “Läuft dein Leben stets nach Plan, fährst du selten Deutsche Bahn!”
Thank you! You just need patience and understanding when taking DB….
Absolutely fantastic content, thank you so much! I came across it while researching on what the maximum number of European countries was, to visit in a single day.
Thank you so much - glad I could help with your research!
Magnificent fun and. Intersting journey. I loved.the music choices too 😊😊😊😊😊
Magnificent well done 😊😊😊
Thank you!
Love your videos and great for watching multiple times 🙂 However..and this is very pedantic, so sorry. Northern Ireland isn't in Britain, so the bus you used your leap card on at 32:50 didn't leave Britain, it left the UK. Sorry again, why couldn't I just leave it! 😒😉😊
Thanks so much! And you are quite right re the distinction, sorry…
Love the 'helvetic version of Crewe' !
No one from Olten has sued for defamation. Yet.
Some corrections The people taken by Barbary Pirates were not locals . They were English settlers , part of the Elizabethan plantation of Munster . The locals actually aided and abetted the pirates in this venture. Malin Head is , as you said, in Donegal . Donegal is not in " Northern Ireland " . It is in the Republic of Ireland . Nice video, though. Thank you .
Thanks very much re the pirates! I definitely know Donegal is in the Republic and I don’t *think* I ever placed it in Northern Ireland… I hope! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Antother wonderful video of a beautiful Country ww aee really spoilt for epic scenery 😊
Wonderfully well thought out interesting journey. The history was fabulous. Having been born in Cardiff i was one of a couple of Barclay's Bank's first intrepid Relief cashier's in the swinging sixties. I travelled all over South and Mid Wales in my trusty VW 1300 ..What a fab time I had.Visiting branches where the Banking hall was warned by a coal fire lit every morning by the caretaker ! Now a still ardent traveller but without my driving licence - i love travelling by public transport both buses and trains.... This journey has wetted my appetite to make a similar more leisurely journey this autumn. Autumn being my favourite season for travelling .....Many thanks Jo for helping me with my route 😘
What wonderful memories of your time in Wales! Hope you enjoy your return there.
@travelling_turtle I'm sure I will ...particularly looking firward to the Beecon Beacons. ..the Black Mountains and a trip to Beddgelert
What an epic challange for you snd Ms Turtle! I can certainly relate to the feeling of cosches randomly disappearing and not turning up, it's happened to me many times. Looking forward to you two's next adventure :)
Thank you! If only information for coach passengers was a little better…
Ireland is such an amazing place! Thank you for taking us on this journey. Recently I took the bus from Clifden to Westport, which was already beautiful, but those first and last sections on your journey are just stunning.
It is so wonderful, and as you say, the southerly and northerly bits in particular - gorgeous!
1 word nagnifique....❤
Merci beaucoup!
Thank you for an inspirational video found whilst searching for ideas on how far I could get with my bus pass. Hoping to do something similar. Good idea + good video and edit = really interesting video. WELL DONE
Delighted you enjoyed it! Happy bus travels…!
Another amazing video, thank you. I love your intricate narrative sections, but please mind that people might 'get our of sync' rather quickly as you speak rather fast and the text is quite technical. It is this I love, but implementing some small pauzes every now and then gives the listener actually time to think/process what he just heard. Otherwise it requires alot of rewinding (me) but I see others just quitting. Thanks again!
Delighted you enjoyed it and thanks for the feedback - it is a constant battle between squeezing stuff in and not making the videos even longer, but I will take that on board.
Fascinating stuff! I used all the routes that radiated out of Welshpool in the four years that I lived there until the summer of 2023 and loved the variety of places that it was possible to visit by bus. Mostly they ran every two hours and not evenings or Sundays but they gave a good alternative when the railways were often disrupted for all kinds of reasons. A particular gem was Montgomery (very easily reached on the T12) and Rhayader, taking the X75 to Llangurig and changing there onto the X47 before walking along an old construction railway trackbed to the dams of the Elan Valley. I could tolerate and even enjoy the T4 route from Newtown as far as Brecon but never ventured further. Now I live near Preston in Lancashire which has services to seemingly all points of the compass from its 39 stands in its iconic city centre bus station. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! And well done for such extensive use of the mid Wales buses…
great video! you should do a challenge where you visit every london airport by plane within 24 hours, i had this idea on my mind for a long time now and im not even sure if its possible
I was in Lisbon and Madrid in nov 2019
I LOVE these videos, I love how calm and scenic and lo-fi they are. It's almost like I'm in the trains and busses myself. Coincidently, I love traveling through Europe by public transport so they also act as a great source of inspiration for my own adventures. I would happily pay for these. Do you have a Patreon or maybe an Amazon wishlist or something like that?
Thank you, delighted you enjoy them! No Patreon at the moment, but maybe as things expand. For now, please just enjoy them!
These videos, aside from being highly entertaining, are a glorious celebration of Europe and Europeanness. Really fine work indeed.
Thank you!
19:14 SBB schedules international trains such that they replace domestic trains scheduled at the timeslot. The reason they do this is that their network is at capacity, they can't squeeze in more trains. The upside is you can take a TGV with a Swiss domestic ticket and without a reservation, and that more Swiss cities have international connections. The downside is that the Swiss railway system is very precise, and if your international train is late, domestic travellers may miss a tight connection later. So they have mostly stopped doing this with German trains since DB is too unreliable, so now most ICEs end in Basel SBB.
Google does give a route with fewer coaches. There are trains from Hendaye to Salamanca, then coach to pick up Portuguese train. Not 24 hrs though.
I did look at doing something like that after the Bayonne disaster - alas, the trains were full!
Just came back from France, so it's a great time to watch a travel video.
I believe I've seen you filming this at St Pancras in late April? I didn't even recognise you initially, but you looked oddly familiar and everything clicked as soon as I watched this video
Could well have been - it was 26 April that I left London!
Learn how how to pronounce the welsh places correctly.
My apologies for any errors.
I think possibly you got your beaches wrong .. The Canadians targeted a beach further east towards Criel sur mer which had intense concrete gun emplacements which effectively blew them out if the water . The Canadians were billeted in Tilgate forest near Crawley at the the time in Nissan huts... The grapes at Peas pottage was where they went to drink but it was not big enough for those rowdy Canucks so they built an extension to the pub .. If you had walked over the swing bridge in Newhaven you could have visited the Canadian war memorial .....
Not impossible I did get the wrong beach, but there are certainly several memorials to Canadian troops on the main beach in Dieppe town.
I thought you lost the Turtle in Wales?
You may spot slight differences to the Turtle 😉
Thank you for another great video superb as usual
Thank you!
Going to Sylt on the 49€ ticket has become a bit of a meme in Germany in recent years, since Sylt is otherwise known as the island of the rich and powerful. It now features a punk camp. I did that journey last year and it's fun to see so many familiar places. Not sure if you did, but dipping into the sea next to the Northernmost Point Sign is quite nice
I went for a paddle! Really love Sylt, but oof the prices.
@@travelling_turtle The campground is cheap (read: normal prices), as is the REWE supermarket nearby. But yeah, we stayed away from everything else 😅
> Our Iberian friends seem a bit allergic to running trains across national borders This is so sad. I wanted to go to Lisbon by train last year, and you just can't. I ended up flying instead because unfortunately they don't pay you to spend two days on busses.
Yes, really annoying. Hopefully will change in the next few years.
Will we see a spin off video about the Belsize Dog Walking Group? 😊
I would need to infiltrate. Probably need to buy a dog.
I see you have a Navigo Easy card, which definitely helps speeding up the entrance to the metro station, if you had to get a ticket from the ticket machine during rush hour, you might well have missed your connection. And I have a feeling that less and less Eurostars sell RATP tickets... Totally agree with the bunker remarkts and especially the lacking connectivity at Montparnasse, however, if you ever find yourself again in Montparnasse, there's a fairly fun rooftop garden on top of the station, a haven for the weary commuters and office workers alike. Love Vitoria-Gasteiz, stayed there for a night a few months ago, and I agree, it's a charming station which really could use some more trains (and a tram connection to the station itself, instead of a few blocks away...)
Always be prepared for the cross-Paris dash! Think all Eurostars still sell a pre-loaded Navigo card in the buffet, but at least you can now use the RATP app to buy tickets now, so there is an alternative. Thanks for the tip re Montparnasse garden! Am sure I will end up there again - I just need to tear myself away from all the Breton creperies around the station.
@@travelling_turtle i can attest about needing preparation for the dash through Paris. A few years ago, when I came back from Bilbao, I had to take a train on a holiday in November (Armistice Day), and all trains were fully booked when I arrived in Hendaye, and the first non-TGV was in the afternoon, Sunday service in France is a joke. By some miracle, a seat opened up, so I made it to Paris by about 6, then I was waiting in line for half an hour at the ticket machine to catch my Thalys (it was still Thalys back then), which I made, with minutes to spare. What should have been a fairly uneventful trip became very stressful very quickly, due to my lack of preparation.
Excellent as always!
Thank you!
Your videos inspire me to travel further away from my corner. of France / Germany 🙂
Really pleased to hear that!
Another fabulous video, beautifully described due to a lot of research I imagine. Perfect viewing in the morning with a cup of tea. Looking forward to your next trip.
Delighted you enjoyed it!
Great video, always a delight to watch! I suspect the southernmost mainland EU point, in Cadiz Spain, is also possibly accessible in about 24 hours from London. Maybe there could be a part 2 of this journey
Thank you! Tarifa could indeed just about be doable… More Iberian adventures to come, I am sure.
This is a challenge now, i have to get to Scotland in 24 hours!
Do you think you'll ever do a north-south UK bus journey from Lizard Point to Dunnet Head? (I imagine you get this question a lot!) I would think it would be challenging, as I can't imagine that bus services in the rural Highlands have great timetables (but maybe I'd be pleasantly surprised).
I expect it will happen at some point - it just needs a lot of free time! And yes, it has to work around some very infrequent buses in the far north of Scotland!
@travelling_turtle I also think a tour of enclaves and microstates would be very interesting (though admittedly expensive). I'm thinking Busingen am Hochrhein, Liechtenstein, Campione d'Italia, Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican. Definitely not feasible as a timed challenge though!
Another wonderful video. Full of interesting facts, great scenery, well chosen music...and Jo ably supported by Mrs. Turtle.
Thank you! And what would I do without Mrs Turtle?
Interesting. I hadn't realised that Iberian long-distance passenger rail was so inadequate! There clearly ought to be a direct high-speed service between Madrid and Lisbon.
@@ClaudiaNW The high-speed rail links between most of the big Spanish cities are generally very good. Shame about anything crossing a border!
Orangina is such a great choice. It totally reminds me of holidays to France as a kid a quarter of a century ago. I never really was prepared for the little bits that float around in it, but still I drank it. Now I feel like drinking it, haha!
I’ll claim my commission from Orangina, thanks 😉
Brilliant video. Did you consider making a Hail Mary for the Punta de Tarifa from Madrid within the 24 hour period?
Thanks very much! I did consider various alternatives, but I did actually need to get to Lisbon for family reasons…
Another great idea. A shame it didn't quite work out. A very interesting and enjoyable video anyways.
Thank you!
