Castle Dracula Considered: a detective story (of sorts)
‘Welcome to my house! Enter freely and of your own will!’
Usually, a host does not lock his guest in his house, nor does a visit involve the involuntary sucking of blood. As the old joke goes, ‘Just walk in (they’ll carry you out)’. Its originator might as well have been thinking of Castle Dracula, and so it is Castle Dracula we will look at today, as interpreted (rightly or wrongly) through the text. Welcome to a detective story (of sorts).

The Starship That Got Away: which one survived Wolf 359?

One of my favourite TNG scenes is in ‘The Best of Both Worlds, Part II’, when the Enterprise encounters the aftermath of Wolf 359. It is eerie to see the destruction, knowing we have missed the action. It is the calm after the storm, and wreckage sparks and the life signs are negative. Forty starships gathered at Wolf 359; thirty-nine were destroyed. One starship clearly survived. But, which on...

It is definitely a discrepancy between the filming model and the filming set but if it were me the simplest explanation is they lowered the bridge and the stations within the saucer section to accommodate it That's what I would do for an engineering perspective if I were told here's an existing ship with a new bridge all the stuff won't fit in the bridge module just lower the decks a little bit

Lets face it. The ships design is all about presenting a luxuries exploration and diplomatic mission ship. It is not designed to be combat efficient. Take the extensive amount of windows. Any combat vessel would opt for less glass and more armor.

In the novelization of Star Trek the Motion Picture, Kirk complains to Decker that the new phaser set up is a poor design due to phaser power being dependent on the main engines, and (if I recall correctly) Decker says that there is a plan to have 'phaser banks' installed as a back up. As for the photons torpedo use in the movie, I think we have to assume Khan ordered minimal yield because he wanted Kirk alive, and not a dust cloud. The Enterprise, fighting in such close quarters in the nebula would also have torpedoes set to minimal yield.

You could explain it by two reasonings. 1st Superstition or tradition. In China, one of the most populous countries on earth during meetings or dinners the most important person is never placed with the entrance to his back as this invites assassins'. 2nd a practical implementation so that the captain does have the entrance in his field of view without having to contour to see the entrance. A quick look over the should gives him view this way, where if it was directly behind him he would have to partially get out of the chair to see who has entered. It was done to allow a better shot for the camera, but could be explained away that way. In theory the whole bridge thing makes no sense as they use view screens and not windows. So they could have placed the bridge deeper in the ship and thereby have it more protected, such as the secondary bridge.

I understand Kiubrick had all the models and many materials destroyed after filming wrapped. I can sort of understand it-after all everything from Forbidden Planet crops up a lot after the original film. I don't mind that-much better to have Robby the Robot turn up in Lost in Space I think. Kubrick would not have allowed that if he had directed Forbidden Planet.

The phaser power question was resolved in Star Trek - The Motion Picture. In the movie, phasers were powered through the warp engines and thereby made unavailable as you describe. In the novelization, written by Gene Roddenberry no less, Kirk discusses this with Scotty and they resolve to change the system because experience shows that they cannot have the phasers depending on warp power. Khan must have studied the refit Enterprise documentation and seen the original design, which Reliant shared, and assumed that by disabling warp power he was disabling the phasers. In the movie, there is a brief scene which shows the phaser banks are being charged on the Enterprise after Kirk orders yellow alert. Khan might have been pulling his shots, but the Reliant's phasers are likely less powerful than the Enterprise's phasers. The Enterprise would have been classified as a heavy cruiser or battlecruiser, but the Reliant without a secondary hull is a light cruiser in other media, and that design replaced an older light cruiser. I would assume that without a secondary hull, the Reliant could not power more powerful phasers anyway.

The original show was before my time. However I grew up watching it in syndication. I hold degrees in mechanical engineering, and computer engineering. it is an ingenuous artistic design for its time, very Da Vinci-esque, even with obvious applicational flaws, If you look at it crossways , she looks almost perfectly balanced if you placed a fulcrum between the struts fore and aft. But you would need four engines for propulsion balance, two top, two bottom. Although a treky would probably name some SiFI nonexistent invention to compensate such as the impossible inertial dampeners, keeping the crew from becoming jam during warp drive. As it is laid out here it would be like steering a wonky shopping cart. (Impulse engines aside). The two warp generators on the top two would not generate a perfect spherical field to envelope the whole ship. There is no pressure in space, the spherical design is best suited to the high pressure of deep-sea exploration. However, from a tactical viewpoint a sphere would be ideal for a destroyer design , deploying weapons to cover the 360 degree (all directions) fields of fire in space. 👍 Now you got me thinking about all the silly variables. LMAO. Nicely done.😜😂

Enterprise was a time-honored name for ships dating back to the first of record, the USS Enterprise A Navy sloop captured from the British in 1775 by the Continental Navy. The seventh U.S. naval warship to bear the name, most famous, USS Enterprise CV-6, Yorktown-class carrier (Called 'the Big Easy' and or 'Big E') was famed for its exploits in World War II, having participated in the first, and inevitably survived to end of the war having seen more major actions against Japan than any other US ship. Including the Battle of Midway June 4 to 7, 1942. The battle was a decisive victory for the United States sinking all 4 Japanese carriers, and a turning point in the war which ended Japanese dominance in the Pacific..... Just sayin'. 😁👍

My personal theory is that the Enterprise a was a hastily upgraded Constitution class ship of the same vintage as the original Enterprise. Well not exactly the Yorktown perhaps maybe it was the ex USS Excalibur. The Excalibur was probably being decommissioned itself when Starfleet needing a ship for Kirk decided to just do a hasty upgrade job on it so Kirk and his crew would be on a ship they knew how to run. This way they could ride out the rest of their careers and the ship itself could be decommissioned at the same time Kirk and company retired. It probably had new and old components on it.

Can confirm, you will fart when the air pressure goes down. It's a common nuisance on skydiving airplanes. It's not uncommon to open the door for a few seconds while climbing to let a particularly nasty far out.. As air pressure drops, your inner pressure stays constant, and it wants to get out. 8 or 9 years ago I did a skydive from 30,000 feet. We had to pre-breath oxygen for about an hour before hand, as the air pressure at 30,000 feet was about 1/3rd as it is on the ground. This would reduce the nitrogen in our tissues so they wouldn't come out of solution in the lower pressure. Thus we had a chance of getting the bends. Bowman could have gotten the bends as well. It's also why you see Maverick running and breathing oxygen before his flight on the SR-72/Darkstar in Top Gun 2, in case he had a decompression in his suit it wouldn't be complicated by the bends. He would have had more than 4 or 5 seconds, even with the adrenalin.

Look, the fact is this franchise is 70 years old. There have been many, many, many writers in those years. Many established races, ship designs, planets, stories, the list goes on. If you expect perfection here, and you're mad about details like this, get your life priorities straight. If you think the discrepancy is bad now, give it 20 years, if Trek makes it that far.

While I appreciate the objectivity for attempting to conduct a analysis breakdown only restrict reference made within the canonized world building for what appears in the TOS series, Films and TNG series, DS9 but with the RETcon of “special editions” or alteration may further contribute to the confusion or lack in continuity within narrative or plot for artificially creating inconsistency. Which in my opinion only reveal the ambiguity created by a franchise with multiple created accidentals or in some cases purposely incompletely a failure in quality control in continuity. I understand the reluctance in using expand universe ie beta canon material which ironically often “tie-up the loose ends” in some case in one story resolves multiple discrepancies but only for another “aired” source to unravel this beta canon material while also creating another discontinuity contradiction. Because there is so many beta canon novels, technical manuals, blue prints and source material in various media formats to account for; even some the conflict with each other BUT there were a select few that were once held and at time even utilized by behind the scene production staff during Star Trek early development (1966-1990) that were actually canon at one time that were intentionally “de-canonzed” when there services were no longer “require” for either prejudice by mass fandom acceptance or in favor to someones “authority” subjective preference and personal bias. For this is precisely, my rational that supports in universe explanation as to why USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A (Heavy Cruiser -CH)was NOT formerly USS Yorktown NCC-1704 (CH) or the doppelgänger facade N.C.C 1717. It is quite clear that Gene Roddenberry desired to use the honorable WWII USS Yorktown (CV/CVA/CVS-10)Fleet Carrier, one of 24 Essex class aircraft carriers; as one of the 12 Constitution starship class namesake. As early as in the initially drafting of the series, renamed to Enterprise but with all due respect to Mr. Roddenberry baseless conjecture speculation suggestion as the solution when not taking into account as depicted in the actual film ST IV TVH; or the film own novelization or final drafted script equal as validate also as semi-canon as well; and yet are not consider. Which bring into debate for legitimate discuss on the validity to support this claim to CH 1701-A origins. Despite erroneous failure to fact in for consideration what is actual mentioned on the film and real world examples: (CONSIDER HISTORIC NOTE: To accept the premise on Mr. Gene Roddenberry suggested opinion that was baselessly support from sycophants on this topic as Yorktown for 1701-A to be canon prejudicially ignoring other source(s) explanation text on this particular topic. By this rational, then canonically speaking ST TMP Novelization MUST trump any version as the evidence to what is actually depicted {as declared} in the novel forward denotes to be as canon, over any version(s) “of theses events that you may see, hear, and feel,” theatrical {1979}, long version extended {1983}, director’s cut {2001 & 2022} as well but which it technically has never been or not accepted despite being written by Roddenberry himself simply as protest plead to the fandom against the “machine” to his limited input during the behind the scenes production ST TMP.) There should be a criteria or template to be used to accept topics as canon regardless of the current state or “artificially created” retcon designed purposely for conflicting previous source overriding previous canon material. Tragically, which remains consistent and also still widely accepted by multiple source(s) and with other creditable source directly involved or by the fandom either grandfather or if used in final product (film or TV series) that was supported at one time but only recently between the period to purge these works from the “establishment”(1995-2025). Just as other films novelization and original final draft scripts provide to give insight to scene or sequence intended to explain in the film but were creatively cut from it for redundancy, necessary exposition deed unnecessary to note, timing and pacing but less on material context, thus should be consider as context but when only, if it brings to clarity or full explanation on a discrepancy or inconsistent created by the deletion of these material. EX. Saavik crying at Spock’s funeral is due to her half Vulcan and Romulan parentage. ACCEPTED FACTS TO CONSIDER: Captain Joel Randolph, USS Yorktown. Played by Indian actor Vijay Amritraj,: memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Joel_Randolph 1. The USS Yorktown either lost all hands and failed in rigging the “make-shift” solar sail to save their lives or were SUCCESSFUL in doing so, thus: 2. It would be morbid to rechristen a ship in preference for/with another name; After ALL HANDs were lost- its entire crew killed in an unavoidable tragic first contact cosmic based event and the starship retained in the same Starfleet naval service, (although partially influence upon by US Navy and other Seafaring Nautical traditions) but so easily stripped of her crew & starship legacy for another crew. Which no naval or maritime history ever documented this as even ceremonially and inconceivable or even to some bordering on superstitiously heritage would have performed; at best sold, or worst scrapped for parts or R&D for ordnance testing or IF, it was successful ti rig the “make-shift solar sail” why would be so easily dismissed and forgotten after it’s legacy “40+ years” of honorable service as one of the 12 original Constitution starship class just to be “renamed?” 3. Dishonorable and Disrespectful to honor one crew legacy while also dishonoring another or even a sister ship legacy over another. That is just tacky or tasteless. This is not only dishonorable and callous to the Yorktown & her crew but as well to the Enterprise’s crew being given a “hand-me-down” loaner if you will; rather than what is imply in both ST IV TVH & ST V TFF as a totally newly build ship. Even creepy to even consider or contemplate the events as depicted in the film to consider or accept that possibility either resulting fate of the Captain Randolph’s command. It should be noted this raise a question: If Excelsior (SOX 2000)class were under construction then as the new vessel, wouldn’t there have been one of these class at this moment rather than in the next incarnation as more prefer rechristening than a old starship? [SEMICANONIAL NOTE: In my opinion, I like to think Capt. Kirk was privately told in advance [hence is calm demeanor in the travel both at the end of ST IV TVH “ ship is a ship” commit as a surprise for his crew] and asked his preference whether two newly constructed vessel in the Excelsior class & which began the new but last o f the refit upgrades subclass in the Constitution statesship class line. JT Kirk been Kirk ego wanted the last of this line to be again an Enterprise (II) class so he personally opted for it rather than the new starship class.] Regardless, the thought is indeed to creepy to even contemplate; if renamed due to lost of all hands but again, if they weren't (it’s plainly wrong) to observe the honoring of one and not others in the same service; I prefer to think in the entire Starfleet their are other ships of the line just as "badass" as dear beloved Enterprise. Thus the following proposal based on source material that actually did the diligence in attempting on explaining this: (refer below to my concept draft to the History of the Starship class Heavy Cruiser as Case of the Yorktown) search in an effort to combine various source to produce a cohesive backstory to USS Yorktown CH 1704. I prefer submit for your approval the following for consideration on this alternative as the true fate of this both starships after the Whale Crisis events by utilizing Beta canon source as adding to it my creative touch to unify all of these source as one solution:

In the novel, the Enterprise A was supposed to be a recently completed Excelsior-class ship, renamed after the crew saved the planet.

this console is actually the exact same console as the second one the third doctor used (the first being of course the og brachacki console). IE the sharp. it just got altered and revamped for 4.

The Constitution Class Refit cannot be filled from a bad angle. But which I mean there are no bad angles to film from. It’s pure beauty with warp engines. Moderately less practical than the Excelsior design, I’ll give you that- and I absolutely loved and adored the Excelsior from the moment I first laid eyes on her, probably some time in the mid 90s when I rented a videotape of ST: III for the first time- but my first love is the Enterprise refit and always will be. I used to dump my monumental collection of Legos on the floor when I was a kid and try and build approximations of both of these ships from random parts I’d collected across the years. I don’t think I ever built a single Lego kit…just didn’t have the patience…I just wanted to let my mind wander and build my own stuff lol

I've also seen the refit Enterprise referred to as an Enterprise Class or a Constitution II / Constitution Class Mark II.

Then there's starfleet's classified truth, a starship survived but she was a highly experimental vessel that only survived due to a couple of factors the ship used a version of the iconian technology and the tech is only usable with a much less dangerous form of omega (or so the propaganda states) anyway the ship's first officer in the midst of battle began seeing a pattern of weakening every time they used a certain phaser frequency and he called the captain from engineering and asked the captain for permission to take the main warp engines to try a blast at that frequency from the deflector dish and the captain agreed, they engaged the dish and at that moment the borg adapted to the frequency and instead of blasting the borg the power somehow ricocheted backs through the deflector and the warp drive destroying both, and the ship was instantly transported for lack of a better term hallway across the federation somewhat near a starbase, and the Captain was nearly killed but eventually recovered at the starbase once the ship got close enough to be picked up by the base's sensors (the ship was nearly in tatters, no communication barely any sensors, rcs barely functional, no shields, no weapons, but somehow they managed to get a single impulse engine at ¼ power) the ship (mostly a section 31 craft) survived but barely and basically didn't leave earth's orbit as it was discovered that deactivation of the iconian device far away from earth (its "homing location" please don't ask) was way too dangerous unless there was an extreme emergency like another borg attack (by the time of the second borg invasion she was literally 18 months from being mouth balled and was ordered away from earth and the Captain was smart to listen as his previously damaged vessel though refitted of course was in no shape to mount another war despitethe crew being secretly decorated by starfleet's highest award the Christopher Pike medal of valor and extreme bravery
