RAAN JAY FAI | eating at THAILAND’s 1st Michelin star street food restaurant
After leaving our Test and Go quarantine hotel we finally hit the streets of BANGKOK. We decided to try our luck stopping by Raan Jay Fai, THAILAND's first Michelin star street food restaurant. Watching the absolute legend Jay Fai cook every dish coming out of her kitchen in the best seats in the house was an incredible opportunity. The experience definitely lived up to the hype.

ABOUT US
We’re Sean and Elliot, two thirty-something former musical theatre actors and restaurant industry veterans with a passion for food and travel.
In 2015 we got married, said goodbye to our acting ambitions, quit our day jobs, and decided to spend our honeymoon on a one-year Working Holiday Visa backpacking throughout New Zealand. That once-in-a-lifetime experience changed our perspective and opened us up to the possibility of long-term travel.
2020 was a brutal year for us, but it gave us the opportunity to rethink our priorities and commit ourselves to our dream of traveling the world together. So in August of 2021, we sold all of our stuff and bought a one-way ticket to Mexico with the plan to travel for as long as we possibly can.
Currently traveling throughout THAILAND.
Make sure to subscribe to follow our trip and catch up with our weekly videos. New Episodes every Saturday at 10am CST. The adventure is just beginning!

Back to OAXACA CITY | Saying Goodbye to MEXICO...by eating all the food

After 2 and a half months of traveling throughout MEXICO, it was time for our trip to come to an end. Beach Bummin' on the OAXACA COAST | Puerto Escondido | Mazunte | Zipolite | Puerto Angel
Переглядів 2,6 тис.2 роки тому
We finally made it back to the beach near the end of our MEXICO journey. Our first stop was PUERTO ESCONDIDO, admittedly not our favorite beach town, but we quickly fell in love with the OAXACA COAST during our stay in ZIPOLITE. Not only does ZIPOLITE have MEXICO's only nude beach, but it's also in between two laid-back beach towns, MAZUNTE and PUERTO ÁNGEL. It ended up being the perfect place ...

On our way from OAXACA CITY to the OAXACA coast, we stopped by SAN JOSÉ DEL PACÍFICO to spend a few days in the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains. Famous among travelers for their access to psilocybe mexicana magic mushrooms (or “hongos mágicos”), SAN JOSÉ DEL PACÍFICO is a great stop to reset and spend time in nature. We soaked in the amazing views, wonderful OAXACA mountain food, and went on a g...
Epic Mezcal Distillery Tour at Convite in OAXACA!

We saved the best activity in Oaxaca for last - a mezcal tour! We chose to go with traditional mezcal producer Convite after visiting their tasting room and we're so glad we did. They provided a full-day tour including breakfast at their restaurant Baltazar, a visit to the local market in Tlacolula (where we had lunch), a tour of their palenque and wild agave fields, and tastings of all the dif...

We took a short shuttle from OAXACA CITY to check out the ancient capital city of MONTE ALBAN. It was the most picturesque spot we've ever been to; absolutely breathtaking. Afterward, we went back to Mercado 20 de Noviembre for a tlayuda and amarillo de pollo, and it ended up being some of the best food we had in MEXICO! OAXACA has so much to offer, and we completely have fallen in love with th...

We finally made it to Oaxaca, the food capital of MEXICO! When we were planning our Mexico trip, Oaxaca was the place we were most excited to visit. It definitely lived up to the hype. Thank you for sharing this video. I know of Huamantla because of my favorite Latin music artist Carlos Rivera. He is from Huamantla and has contributed many good things to welfare of his hometown. In your video, the town looks like a pretty safe place to live.. even for Americans. FYI, Carlos Rivera is having a concert on 26 Oct 2023 at the Rosemont Theater outside of Chicago.

I mean you can literally have buffet at 5 stars hotel with less than 1,000THB instead of waiting 3 hours for an overpriced but underwhelmed crab omelette with subpar service. But hey, it's your money.

Your video was extremely touching! 🌺🌱🌸❤️ Like your grandfather, mine left very young to America/Houston, TX, due to poverty. He met my grandmother near the border of Texas! I was fortunate enough to know him and my grandmother! Unfortunately, I didn’t speak Spanish. They were first generation Mexican Americans. In fact, my grandmother’s parents were farmers and farmed on the Mexico-TX border! When the border was placed, they were told to move AND became immigrants on their own land! Since it was considered “BAD” to speak Spanish for Mexican’s in America back then, I an not fluent, and was also told “Mexico is dangerous.” This is why I never went to Mexico. I just found out that Mexican’s were hung, tortured, and even given “gasoline baths” at the border for being “dirty.” I feel ashamed for not knowing my roots, even though I still have family in Mexico, and my family speaks Spanish. We still practice a lot of traditions, it just bothers me, because all I cared about was my education, and becoming successful. I always felt like an outcast with friends, because I was different. For instance, we didn’t celebrate Thanksgiving, and I always wondered why? Well, now I am understanding more about our customs and not others. I realize that I became so Americanized! I have a huge family, and grew up with traditional Mexican customs and culture., and am so fortunate that I did! I’m now learning Spanish at 46! I want to learn more about my grandparents, what tribe they came from, etc. Our ancestors are in our DNA, and it’s important to know why we are the way we are. We have to pass it on to our children. Thanks for the video and sharing your story!

Jay Fai restaurant uses quality ingredients to cook. But I think the taste is very ordinary. I'm Thai. I don't speak with prejudice. I've tried to eat here. And I don't think I will go again for a reason. 1. Long wait, but enough to eat, it's not worth the wait. 2. Atmosphere in the shop It gives the feeling of wanting to cry. 3. Price. I don't know who will think it's cheap or expensive. as I said This shop uses good ingredients, but if the taste is normal. For me, it doesn't come as a surprise. In conclusion, because I am Thai I'm just addicted to this shop. It didn't have a feeling that was engraved in his heart and had no idea to invite his friends to eat. Once is enough ... for others Where will the comments go? I can't know Let me tell you what I think. and my tongue tells me to write it like this

OMG..Paid premium restaurant prices for street food. Most of that can be got on the street for 50-70 Baht (not 800-100) and is just as good. I'm sure it was good, but wow! 10X more than most street food that is totally awesome all over town. Hope you enjoyed your trip here and were able to get street food all over. Can't say I've ever had food in a restaurant that justified the cost differential over street food.

    • @HomeisBehindTravel
      @HomeisBehindTravel 2 роки тому

Hey, Todd. Over our time in Thailand we’ve eaten tons of delicious street food for very cheap prices. We’ve also had some more expensive meals that to us were worth it. We like to experience it all when we travel and ever since we saw Jay Fai on Street Food Asia we dreamed of going to her place. It was everything we imagined and more and yes, we paid for that experience and it was more than worth it. Jay Fai is a culinary powerhouse and a badass street food chef with a ton of integrity when it comes to the quality of her seafood and the way she runs her shop. We’d eat there again in a heartbeat.
