Life is a balancing act between survival (money) and happiness. More of one can often mean less of the other. Almost every decision we make weighs these two interests, and is informed by our emotions, values, dreams, traumas, biases, and the identities we wish to project to the world.

Unhappy and burned out on a $34,000 trip around the world
In 2022, I quit my dream job and spent $34,000 exploring 18 countries across South America and Asia in 18 months, to heal my burnout and find true happiness beyond work. For several months of my world travel sabbatical, I dashed through bucket list destinations, hiking to snow-capped peaks and glacial lakes in Patagonia and bathing in warm electric waters in Thailand. But the wanderlust and thrill quickly petered out. I was living my biggest life dream, but feeling burned out and hollow inside. That's when I realized the one big mistake I was making, a revelation that transformed my sabbatical and my life.

Microsoft IT outage strands me in London for 10 days
Переглядів 5512 місяці тому
The Microsoft Crowdstrike IT outage grounded over 5,000 commercial flights worldwide on July 19th, in what’s been called the largest IT outage in history. A couple thousand flights have been cancelled each day in the aftermath. And my cancelled flight from London to New York was one of those. My airline, Norse, booked me on a flight one week later, on the 28th. So I’m stuck here in London. That...
Why Americans are moving to Bali for a better life
Переглядів 3 тис.4 місяці тому
I quit my dream job at age 32, and explored 18 countries across South America and Asia in 18 months, on a world travel sabbatical. I lived like a queen in many poorer countries. But just one place tempts me to leave the United States for good: Bali, Indonesia. In Bali, I felt the sense of comfort, serenity, adventure and home that I'd always craved, after over a decade of burnout, anxiety and n...

4 REGRETS after I quit my dream job and spent $34,000 on travel
You need to learn how relaxed. Yes, push yourself to get ahead. You push too hard. You're not appreciate your accomplishment.
i agree! :)
Eu vi sua história! Me deixou chocado um pouco kkkk, mas vc tem coragem
what shocked you about it? :)
Thanks for sharing, hope you find your happy place! My personal thoughts I believe it starts with being optimistic, celebrating small everyday wins that compound the happiness, along with staying in present. Self reflection is good but self doubting everything while reflecting would be taking it to a dangerous extreme. Believe in oneself, stay in present, celebrating small wins. Goals will keep shifting, I wouldnt make happiness and joy being conditional on them.
Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment! I agree that the key to happiness is being present and living fully in the moment so you can feel and enjoy all the small moments. It's not about racing toward the big goals!
you will never feel content unless you transcend the focus off from yourself by having kids
really? do you know that by personal experience? It's something I've wondered!
I can sense your intensity through the video. I hope that you will eventually find the peace you so desire.
thank you, that means a lot 🙏
oke, but the n1 question, how to sustain this? cause its either from ur savings or having rich daddy. i would really like to pursue happiness more, but always the question is where s the money gonna come from and the future if no savings. thanks
All savings, from working over 10 years :) I'm also lucky that I live in the US and earn US dollars, which helps a lot
This video is awesome and highly relevant to me as this upcoming January I'm leaving for a 1+ year long travel journey. My budget is also in the same ballpark as yours ($30,000 USD)
thank you for this insightful video
Aw thanks for the feedback! Which insights resonate with you most?
Vietnam could be more enjoyable if the people didn’t throw garbage everywhere and the food vendors practiced hygiene.
ha! you remind me oof my first iteration of this journey! that was harsh and followed by more mistakes!
wow! have you embarked on more than one sabbatical?
@@helenjzhao more like working remotely. not full time travel. i also realize the vast different between vacation, travel, work-remote. all very different things
@@LIAM_VIDoh man ya each of those experiences is so so different. I haven’t experienced traveling while working remotely yet. But I probably will soon since I got a remote job!
Thanks for sharing Helen ❤
Aw thanks for the feedback! 😊
How did you take the photos? What equipment did you use?
@@gloriamiley8686 mostly shot on iPhone - locals working at the waterfall took the pictures! Their job is literally taking photos for tips. This only cost me about $5
Nice one Helen! Good ol' Chiang Mai 🍵

Wow, I wish I had gone to Vietnam with you!
Bali is very low level life style place mostly for life looser aussie and usa people who can afford stay in high level places in the world 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Shhh don't ruin this place by exposing it just for some internet clout. Some things are better left alone.
ha! This place really is an amazing secret isn't it? Sorry I'll try not to expose it any further! haha
beautiful. Did I go there with you? I don't recognize it.
@@noellezhang4215 no we only did north Vietnam not central Vietnam!
LOVE ME SOME DA NANG! 🍵

@@helenjzhao Because I'm worldwide! 🍵

@@nishantjpbhatt I hope you make it happen!
How can i do that if I'm such a failure and don't have any money
@@vikasforvictory right I guess if u were able to afford traveling for 1.5 years with the money you saved from working, you must not be a failure 😅
@@helenjzhao so don't sell yourself short , you are amazing

💯💯💯
Gorgeous photos! Can't believe it's so affordable there
Thanks so much!
It is exciting to do all that traveling. I appreciate your transparency about feeling more lost afterwards than ever. I know God placed eternity in our hearts and the only one who can fill the gap is Jesus. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life; no comes to the Father but through me. Jesus is what you are looking for. Through Him is forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Jesus gives us true peace.
Thanks for reading this story, glad it resonated with you :)
Good one 🍵
Good luck with your new opportunity 🍵
Thanks Loren! :)
Air travel in general just gets worse every decade, and the tea they have on offer is just filthy teabags. 🍵
Nice one 🍵

Here from CNBC. At 34 would you consider a better work life balance there a benfit that comes with cons like making it possibly more difficult to find a man, have kids, your beautiful house and retirement savings? I know a lot of expats and would not consider any of them in the stage to successfully seek that partner, have kids and build the wealth needed to have the beautiful balance.
