Far Away Farm
Приєднався 5 кві 2021
Small farm on Minnesota Iron Range. Working on field improvements and trying to raise a few more beef. Kind of working on the small diversified family farm model. We milk a Jersey cow, keep poultry, usually raise a few pigs. We do all our own meat processing, make cheese, and do a lot of canning when the garden does good. Our heating is all done with wood which we cut on the back 40. We invite you to come along for the good and bad.

Great price for the hoop building! The tarp won’t be that bad. You could go into profitable hay sales with indoor storage if you can stand dealing with customers. Good luck with the potatoes.
@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn The potatoes aren't looking too good right now, but there's some under there. Definitely a good price. I can deal with quite a bit for cash. 🤣
I like the spots in our fields that just have random big ones pop up once in awhile versus the other field where it's just nonstop stones. You can pick until you're blue in the face and not have made any difference You didn't pull a fertilizer spreader from floodwood all the way back home to use it and then take it back?
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 The 130 mile round trip pulling a spreader for 2 tons seemed like a bad idea. I can bucket fertilizer a lot faster than that. 🤣 I have a couple areas that are covered in small rock but mostly it's the scattered big ones. In those bad areas all a guy can do is pick the bigger ones and roll the rest down.
It's hard to believe that it's that time already to get frost. That's a nice little spreader.
@@pinesedgefarm1155 Well I don't really think it should be time to get frost but the weather doesn't seem to care what I want. 🤣 if I had bigger fields it would take forever to get anything done but it holds about 600 lbs of granular so 300 lbs an acre isn't too many refills on a 4 acre field. It spreads fairly evenly so I can't complain.
Hello Will! Good day!
@@paulcasefarms9933 Hello Paul. Good to see you. Thanks for stopping by.

@@Heimerviewfarm The potatoes look better than I thought today. They should be able to put a little into the potatoes yet.
Looks like you and Brent had productive weekends 😊 I did alright too. Got 10 4.5 foot silage bales off one field so I guess the other will have 5. Then I think I'm done haying.

35 degrees here Saturday morning. Some of the sorghum looks like it may have gotten nipped. Now it's showing 80's for the next 10 days 🤦♂️
I guess if was easy everyone would be doing it. 🤣 The first year I grew millet we had an early frost and the tall stuff got burned but it came out alright. I wouldn't think you'd have a toxicity problem if it stands there a while.

Good evening Will. That hoop shed will be nice! Lol.. yup, fling it on and always come close.. it's nice having the GPS/rate controller on our fertilizer buggy! I was always close before, but now I can change speed and still put on the right amount 👍😎
@@GosselinFarmsEdGosselin There's no doubt I would enjoy a buggy with rate control. I could pull a buggy from Floodwood and back but for a couple ton here and there I guess I'll use the bucket filling method. I should be able to keep a lot of carry over bales in good shape in the hoop building. 👍🙂
@@farawayfarm2520 nothing wrong with fling guessing!! We did it for years.. didn't have any electronics until we got it with the chassis we rebuilt. I have to read the book every year, but once it's set, it's set.. no guessing, other than spacing between passes..

4.2 miles for our Co-Op. . . How easy is it to pick up ground up there to expand?
@@e.a.bfarms Nice to be that close. Within reasonable distance of me most of the decent farmable ground is being used for one cutting of hay a year with little to no inputs. A local guy who watches my videos refers to it as subsistence beef farming. There are a lot of landowners that are having someone cut it to keep the brush from taking over. There are also a fair number of people still cutting their own fields and selling the hay because they have the equipment but haven't had animals for years. Sometimes someone gives up a piece or quits farming and then the landowner is looking for someone else to cut it. The pieces I hay that aren't mine have all come to me that way. I've never gone out looking for another piece, someone just shows up at my door wondering if I would be interested in cutting their place. There are a few rental arrangements between people that I know of but there really aren't any set prices per acre or anything like that. If I wanted to find more ground I could do it fairly easily. All of it would need major improvement but I know it would work. The first year I owned this I made 19 bales 5x5 cutting everything I could get the haybine over. This would be typical of the unimproved one cutting fields that are standard here. This year at home I made 50 silage bales 13 dry 4x6s and 200 small squares on less area than the unimproved first year. Things will grow here. I believe my best business model would be making small squares. On a year like this the area is going to be flooded with cheap round bales. There's always a market for decent squares, and by decent I mean anything that isn't dusty. I would definitely have to improve a lot of small fields to get some consistency and improvement in yield. You can probably tell from the lengthy answer that I think about this a lot. Thanks for the question. I would love to come visit someday this winter to see your place and we can have a discussion on the farming possibilities here.
At least the weather was nice, as well as the scenery on your day trip for supplies! I think you picked the perfect name!!
