How to learn LIGHTING for FILM

In this video, we discussing how to learn lighting for film through one of my favorite techniques, reverse engineering. This is the art of taking a scene and breaking it down to understand how a cinematographer might have lit the shot. Watch me in real-time take scenes from the famous movie Oppenheimer and break down how Hoyt Van Hoytema might have shaped his lighting for the movie. Obviously, ...

Why do your talking head segments look...soft? Lens filter? I like it.
Haha thanks bro! I don't believe I was using any sort of filter on this one. I could be mistaken tho. I did shoot this a year ago so I don't remember exactly. Looking back at it tho I definitely pulled my highlights way back so that contrast is not super strong over all. That could be whats making it look soft.
@@joshmillerdp got it thanks man
Great video man, thank you for sharing 🔥🔥🔥
My guy!!! Appreciate you bro! Thanks for watching
links to the diffusion will be appreciated too, even if its not all
My bad! Ya I can definitely add links!
@@joshmillerdp still waiting on the links bro
@@obarovft314 just plopped that in the description
If you lower the light output, will the 1/4 grid give the same result as the full grid. Secondly, if one has a lower light watt like 200x, the 1/4 should be equal to a 600w full grid. Am I right?
Output wise, yes. But how soft the light is, no. But that’s exactly how to think about this stuff. If you only have a 200w then you have to think of how you can make it work
made me a subscriber
What is up!!!! Thank you bro! Appreciate you.
Thank you for doing this. So interesting and insightful 🙏🏻👍🏻
Absolutely! I’ll do more stuff like this!
Thx for this. YT needed it
Hell ya that makes me happy!!!
Josh is HOT
😂😂😂
Amazing video man! Love your honesty and simplicity when breaking down everything. I usually use the soft frost on sunny exteriors where you don’t want to over soften sunlight but keep the hard quality with a soft touch of diffusion. With the sun there’s no proximity to the source so no hotspot is created and you get a smoother result. Love your work man! 🙌🏼🔥
Thank you bro! Ahhhh ok! That makes a ton of sense. I’m definitely going to try out soft frost next time I do an exterior shot. Thanks bro that helps me a ton honestly!
This is super helpful, I’ve wanted to buy a diffusion for a bit. This video will definitely help me save money so I’m not buying the wrong things. You’ve definitely laid it all out 🙌🙌 thank you for the content
Hell ya dude! And don’t forget to rent stuff as well so you can test it out. Enigma has all of these diffusions
@ yeah I definitely need to get used to renting stuff, I like to have like a base of things that are owned, that way if I need more I could rent. I’ve always been that way with lenses. I definitely need to be like that more with everything
Great video bro!
Hell ya thank you bro!!! Thanks for taking the thumbnail 🔥🔥🔥
This was a great lesson thanks a lot! I also saw Brando (audio) working with you. It's cool you guys work together.
Oh no way?! Brando is awesome! Are you in Utah then?
@@joshmillerdp Ha ha! Yeah, he is a playful guy. I know him through FullTime Filmmaker courses. You probably know Parker and all the other crew as well.
Great video and break down brotha
My guy! Thank you so much!
HiLite is great for an overhead outdoors.
I’m guessing if you want just hard sunlight but just soften it up a tich???
🔥 I love bounce with muslin
Bro same. Muslin in incredible. Like book light bounce with muslin or just bouncing right into it?
@@joshmillerdp honestly , just bounce. Bounced light is my favorite, because to me, it just makes sense. It's what happens in real life most of the time in my experience on earth. Like the sun hitting walls or something
I was a dancer in a mega budget movie earlier this year and they almost solely used soft frost for diffusion! I feel at moments they used highlight for closeups on the female star. Pretty cool!
Oh really??? How big of a scrim and how far away were they with it?
@@joshmillerdp Pretty large! 12x? And they were pretty far with it because of wide shots for the numbers! And it looked STUNNING on the main actress
JOSH!! Wassup it’s Kong. I didn’t know you had a UA-cam channel dude. Keep it up.
Brooooooo Kong what’s up brotha!!!!!! Haha did you just find this on the discovery page on UA-cam?
@@joshmillerdp I was watching Brady's channel and he mentioned your name and I was like, "is that the Josh I worked with?" Also, some of your videos were actually recommended to me. I didn't realize it was you.
@@KongThaoSoundthe freakin GOAT, Brady Bessette. Love that guy. So good to freakin hear from you dude! Did you go see the Uranus premiere???
@ Unfortunately I couldn’t make it. Hopefully I will get to see it soon. It looks good.
I work at a rental house and the Grids and Silk are the ones most everyone rents. Grid cloth (Full, Half and Quarter) is always a decent place to start diffusing units. Everything else is relative to your needs/shot. Love this video! -Didn't see this one covered: Inbetween Full Silk and 1/4 Silk is China Silk which is 1 Stop light loss.
This is gold! Thank you for commenting. I actually have heard of china silk but have never used it! I definitely gravitate towards grid cloth more but need to try silks out more often. But seriously thank you for commenting
Content and information 🙌🙌
Thank you so much!!! Hope it helped!!!
JOSH!!! I think I saw you drive by me in LA! I tried yelling for you but I don’t think you heard me! Please shout me out!
Bro we’re on the same shoot of course you saw me 😂😂😂
@@joshmillerdp😂😂😂😂
Great video! What are the top 2 or 3 diffusions types that you find yourself using on the majority of your shoots?
Depends on the scene but go top three for me are magic cloth, silent full grid 1/4 silent grid!
@@joshmillerdp Thanks Josh! Do you think an Aputure 300x is powerful enough for a 6x6' of magic cloth, or would you recommend a more powerful light like the 600d?
@ it’s definitely powerful enough there will definitely be limitations. You won’t be able to get it back as far or far from your talent. I actually should make a video showing how different situations require or don’t require like a 300 or 600 light!
@@joshmillerdp Thanks so much Josh. That video would be super helpful. Also, with black friday coming up, I'd love to see a video where you discuss the best investments in terms of modifiers, lighting, monitors...etc. you'd recommend for beginner and intermediate videographers! I'm definitely struggling with where it's best to invest transferring from weddings to corporate and commercial video work.
Always on point and clear! Appreciate you, good sir!
Thank you so much! I try to keep the fluff out as much as possible! Appreciate you being here!
This is a great video for me to learn by you!!

where did u get your table? and how big is the room and table would you say?
Subbed even though my left ear felt a bit lonely! 😁
Wait what?! Was the audio only coming out of one side?
@@joshmillerdp No, but it was probably recorded stereo or something as there was a difference between the ears 😁
@@videografenNO really?! Hahaha oh crap my bad. Didn’t even recognize that!!!
don't listen to him guys! I worked on Netflix movies where we used shower curtains and DIY frames!

bro...this is increible, very helpful as someone who starting in filmmaking and needs the fundamentals, thank you for mentioning the 3 point lighting principles, you just ease my mind
can you do a series on what to know to become a DP from beginning to your level
Thanks bro that’s what I wanna hear! I’m excited for your filmmaking journey! But ya don’t ever neglect 3 point lighting. It’s the foundation for all other lighting
@@joshmillerdp thank you, can't wait for your next videos to come

Hell ya thank you brotha!!!
Very well made thanks for the tips Josh 🫡
Thank you! Hope it helps!
"Dark & Moody" is my go to straight out the gate regardless of the pitch 😅, really struggle with that soft clean look without overexposing the shit out of the frame. Super helpful tips my dude 🤘🏻
I feel that bro! I definitely gravitate towards that right out of the gate but have to dial it back if that’s not the vibe haha I’d definitely recommend using the EL zone you can get those ratios right without actually over exposing the image!
@@joshmillerdp Legit just heard about the EL zone today, been in the market for a new monitor so think the eye is on Small HD now for sure!
@@pauldodd5332 niiiice! You’re life will be changed forever!
@@pauldodd5332 The app Monitor+ has EL zones and costs about 20 dollars. I use it all the time with my A7s3's when checking exposure. The benefit is that it's wireless so you can walk around with your phone and tablet and adjust stuff. I'm a one-man band, so it's super usefull.
Tenzin Lazerson is such a cool name. Great tutorial/demonstration
Haha right?! I freakin love Tenzin he’s one of the best dudes out there
Great video, man. What's the best light to inexpensively light houses through trees and cast a moon light color temp from a far distance? I know that's usually an expensive light, but just wanted to see if you suggested an option I havent thought of.
Hey thank you bro I appreciate that! So I would say your best bet would be to rent something rather then buy. Like at my rental house you can rent a 1200d for $95 a day. Or like a HMI light like a Joker 800w for $20 a day. Where are you located?
Thanks that's helpful Keep up the goodwork!
Absolutely! Happy to help 😁😁😂
I found some value, but decrease superficiality.
👍🏻
Amazing. Really. Thank you man
Absolutely! So happy you enjoyed it 🔥
Thankyou Brother ❤❤❤❤ u kept it Really nice and Simple ❤
You’re welcome! Love to hear it 🔥🔥🔥
I feel like once you’re at the point of owning all that nice lighting, you don’t particularly need this sort of information. Great goals to work towards though 🤙
You’d be surprised there are lots of people that own tons of expensive gear and have zero clue how to use it properly.
Also just teaching principles here at the end of the day. You can make something look super good if you know principles
@@joshmillerdp Hi, I'm a beginner in lighting with virtually zero knowledge and experience. Where can I learn this? Do I need to have lots of money to spend to learn how to light?
Instead of a bounce board... Would u recommend using a checkerboard reflector???
Totally depends. I probably wouldn’t use something that has a reflector element just cause it can be a really hard light. I’d recommend a a checkered bounce that has like white and tan colors that gives a nice mix of warm and cool light. Or look up bluff bounce. It’s a new thing that will blow your mind!
Incredible info 🎉 new subscriber thank you!!!🎉
