Moaning Caverns Expedition Crawl
Join me on an exhilarating adventure through Moaning Caverns, a natural wonder discovered in the 1840s. With my go-pro (in my way -- bonk!), I navigated the undeveloped paths of the caverns like the Meat Grinder and the Birth Canal -- no lights, no stairs, just crawling and climbing in the dark with only a lighted helmet. If you've ever wanted to writhe underground like a worm, I highly recommend you take on this adventure and witness its wonders for yourself!

      The tallest pair we had in the attic, haha. No idea what the brand is, but it shouldn't matter. I recommend getting the tallest ones you can find so you don't strain your back while hunched over -- a pair made for someone at least 6ft tall. Have fun!

      How long did it last? And how long where the parts where you have to squeeze through lol? Like are you on your hands and stomach the entire time? Or do you go through a tight squeeze then you stand up and continue walking then again another tight squeeze? Basically , are you in a hunchback the entire time lol. T@@jdhatfield723 curious to know which part was the scariest for you/ and more fun 😊 I'm booking a reservation next week , would love to get all the details lol thank you!

      Ahh awesome okay definitely have to do this now! Does most of the tour include crawling? Or is it like, you go through a main squeeze (like pancake squeeze by example) then afterwards you walk for a while then again another squeeze? . @@jdhatfield723

    • @jdhatfield723
      @jdhatfield723 2 місяці тому

      @@maytegallegos6073 After the first couple chambers you will be mostly crawling. Each squeeze generally leads to a small chamber where your group can regroup and rest, though there are few opportunities to fully stand/walk until you loop back around to the primary chamber at the end. :)

    Amazing work. For those without access to a 3D printer, I've found that coating clay in casting latex improves durability for things like fangs and horns. But you do lose some of the cool texture rough clay has to make it look more like teeth and bone.

    I really enjoyed your videos and have watched a few of them. I do a similar thing with a stilts costume, but my ogre is upright and bipedal. The texturing with paper towels looks great for texture. Do you have problems with rain and wetness? or are they sealed up with the paint? I hope your 2023 one is going well!

    • @jdhatfield723
      @jdhatfield723 8 місяців тому

      Thanks for the kind words :) That's a great question -- I'm sure the house paint provides some kind of sealing properties, but I haven't dared put it to the test since everything else (paper towels, acrylic paint) is super water soluble. Might be worth experimenting with in case rain is unavoidable, though. Good luck with your ogre costume!

    I would love to say that i wouldn't be startled if this rounded a corner of a misty foggy night. Love to say i wouldn't make some garbled squawk, have a small heart attack before tripping over my own feet in attempt to flee. Love to say that. Except i can't. You see i happen to know a lot about me. Been in my life for, well my whole life. So i know me and I'd likely make some noise that's a mix of cussing and other primal fear sounds before the more rational part of my mind catches on enough to at least get the message to my legs: Pivot dangit! Lift foot place, repeat quickly.

    Should I make my mask last ?

    • @jdhatfield723
      @jdhatfield723 10 місяців тому

      Good question! The benefit of doing the mask last is you can use the rest of the body to gauge its dimensions so it doesn't end up being too big or too small in comparison. Although, if you don't already have concept art drawn out, doing the mask first helps inform some creative direction for the rest of the costume, too. I've approached it both ways so it's mostly up to personal preference. Good luck!

    • @jdhatfield723
      @jdhatfield723 10 місяців тому

      Poorly, haha. I cut some windows into the belly area so I can look down to see where I'm stepping, a small window in the top of the neck so I can peer out over the head, and can see out to either side through the arm holes. Lots of blind spots, though, so I always have a spotter to help give me directions and alert me of nearby obstacles and people.

    Love this build and we're using it as a jumping off point for our building of our monster for our stage version of "A Monster Calls" at the high school I teach at. Question: is there a reason you use medical tape to hold stuff in place? Would painter's tape or the like work as well?

    • @jdhatfield723
      @jdhatfield723 Рік тому

      Thanks for the kind words! I used medical tape because (I already had a bunch on hand) and the porous surface absorbs the paper mache substrate pretty effectively. It’s not the most cost-effective material so it’s worth experimenting with painters tape, however I worry the slick surface may repel the paint/ paper mache in comparison. Let me know how it goes for you and your theater team!
