Maybe The Hardest Drum Parts I've Written For A Rock Artist/Band (drums only, no click)
After playing along with music for a few hrs I turn off the headphones and challenge myself to play songs entirely from memory, with no cues to rely on. I'm almost 40yo and have a ton of serious brain damage so it's a good exercise, heh.
Here I'm playing my drum arrangement for Come Here For Love by Vincent Gargiulo National Park (check out the music video @VincentGargiulo ).

Depression Era Cartoon by Vincent Gargiulo National Park - Playthrough (No Click/Track, Phone Mic)

We're playing a campy/festy thing in Oregon this month and I'm making sure I've got the set locked. This is entirely from memory- headphones just for protection. Check out Depression Era Cartoon by VGNP (@VincentGargiulo) for the full musical experience. I'm getting better at playing quietly and feathering but this is definitely a rock band, heh. Sorry the mic distorts a few times; I really nee...
Flam-y Quintuplet Exercise (I May Be First Earthling To Do This EVER)

I've been working with alternative flam ideas for a long time, and this is one I enjoy a lot. The pattern is five notes long, and I'm using dynamic variations that aren't taught in school. I will award ANYONE who can tell me correctly what it is that I'm doing here with a big hug! #drums #practice #exercise

I managed to provoke some... emotions with my last video on this subject- drummers feeling like I was disgracing drum tradition and belittling anyone who doesn't like rap/hip-hop. Of course, LOL. But some folks were really interested and shared cool ideas, so I felt like trying again. If you feel attacked/offended, there might be a gap in perception- not really understanding what I'm saying. I had a great time with this flam thing today. I should take more rest days, LOL. People have a lot to say about this, once the subject gets breached! I wonder if maybe I landed a better trick with this one, taking the idea a little further with input. I'm interested in any thoughts ideas you have. @chadwackerman3697 I've been digging your flams a lot, for years now! Let's name one after ya, he...
Am I The First Person To EVER Discuss *Quiet* Flams? (Talk+Example, Home/Pad Work)
Переглядів 2319 годин тому
I'm considering starting a movement about flams, heh. In my experience flams are always taught/written as an *accent* with a ghost note very close to it. Maybe the accent can be a creative choice we make, but not required to perform a flam? It seems to me that any group of two notes that are close enough together, is a flam. In a roll notes can be very close together but we don't hear a flam so...

Playing Quintuplets Around The Drums Between 3-over-4 Accents, Grooving Oddly Along (no click)

I've heard this sticking concept played by many masters (often much faster), especially in jazz but never really covered it with any of my teachers. It's very common in fills etc to play groups of six notes over a straight quarter note pulse. What I find can make things interesting in kind of a textural way is to play five notes between each 3/4 accent, occasionally. And it's definitely not som...

Nice! This type of exercise is super common in more advanced drumlines/drum corps batteries. We call it rhythmic “gridding”. Some things to try: 1. Keeping the accent on the same partial and “gridding” the ornament (flam/diddle/buzz/etc). For example, 16th note grid, accents on the “+” count, with a moving diddle. The one you did in the video is 5let grid with consistent downbeat flams and moving accent. 2. Playing the accents grid backwards. Instead of 1-2-3-4-5-1, it becomes 5-4-3-2-1. A bit trickier than you’d think :) 3. Having a moving accent AND ornament. For example, after every accent, play a drag or five stroke roll. (R ll r l r L rr l r l, then r L rr l r l R ll r l, etc.) That’s a lot of stuff and I typed for too many minutes on this random video so good luck and goodnight! Haha

I'm definitely playing a 'grid' many, many practice routines are 'grids,' with any instrument. However, moving the *flam* while leaving the accent, or moving the accent while not moving the flam, is a variation that has yet to be published publicly anywhere. You didn't provide any examples and in fact we don't have standard way to write a ghosted flam in music theory.

Have you come across George Lawrence Stone's "Accents and Rebounds" yet? Incredible book, I could spend the rest of my life working out of the book. I don't have that kind of dedication of course, but even the small amount of work I have done with that book has been incredibly beneficial. As for tempo and frequency what you are referring to is when a waveform goes into audio range. Even though frequency is more about the pitch and tempo is about the speed at which music is played --- they really are the same thing -- a waveform. How can tempo be a waveform? Well, it's a clock. And in electronics, clocks generate square waves. The frequency of the clock is the rate, and this rate can be measured in BMPs if we want. For me, there is no difference in tempo and frequency, only the shape of the waveform being oscillated. Cheers!

You’re heard man. Playing drums is life. Rhythm is life. Also, side note, Quest Love is the drummer that got me started playing drums. Specifically his playing in Mellow My Man - all I wanted to do was play that one beat, just like him. I thought that would be it. Nope, it’s been a 20+ year journey since then, don’t ever want it to stop. Playing drums is transcendent, feels like nothing else.
