With the accents, the dotted 8th notes sound like a triplet. Am I wrong?
Hey there, the reason it sounds "triplety" is because a dotted 8th note is a pulsed note every three 16th notes. If you were to play alternating 16th notes in your hands and then phrase an accent every three 16th notes you would "feel" the impression of a triplet when really you're just playing an accent every three. That accent pulse is the dotted 8th note! So while dotted 8th notes are not triplets, they are in the same family because notes grouped into combinations of 3s have a similar feel/note quality. Hope that helps!
Hi Kyle, I'd really like to get more info on this sort of work as you have done something that I always imagined but never knew was possible without the tech knowhow! I am doing innovative performance as part of my music degree and I am really curious about integrating acoustic drums with a digital kit. I'm guessing you are using something like a Pearl Traveller with mesh heads and triggers? I was thinking I could buy some piezo pickups to attach to some quiet cymbals that I own to expand the timbres etc. If I could trigger some stuff in the fashion and loop it, I can then play acoustic drums over the top of it. :D Sorry for going on but this has opened my eyes to what is possible! Thanks :)
