What Happened to Richard Marx? The 80s Icon and the Dark Mystery of His Illness and Disappearance
In the late 80s, Richard Marx was one of the most-played artists on the radio. Songs like "Should've Known Better", "Endless Summer Nights", and the famous ballad "Right Here Waiting" topped the Billboard charts, making him an absolute success.
What many don't know is that "Right Here Waiting" was written as a love letter to his then-girlfriend, actress Cynthia Rhodes, while she was filming in South Africa. Richard didn’t intend to release the song-it was personal, a way to cope with the longing, since he couldn’t get a visa to visit her. But this deeply intimate and sincere song became one of the biggest hits of his career and one of the most famous ballads of all time.
Before reaching this level of fame, something important happened in Richard’s life. In 1981, when he was just 18 and still in high school, he received an unexpected call from none other than Lionel Richie. The singer had heard a demo of Richard’s through a friend and was impressed by the young talent. He not only encouraged Richard to move to Los Angeles after finishing high school but also spoke to his parents, assuring them that his future in music was promising. With Lionel’s push, Richard took the first step towards becoming one of the big names in 80s and 90s pop music... and his journey was just beginning.
But, like many artists from that era, Richard kind of disappeared from the global spotlight, and today I’m going to tell you a little about the story of this great icon and where he is now! Kool & the Gang, in my humble opinion, lost that incomparable funk edge when they brought James Taylor in. Completely killed it for that good music killer, "pop" success. They sucked complete pop ass with "hits" like Joanna, Misled, Celebration and Ladies' Night. None of THAT crap matched Summer Madness, Open Sesame and Jungle Boogie.

He’s one of my favorite singers. Too many good songs to name a favorite. Right here Waiting is especially important to me. Brings back memories of my time in Hawaii. I dedicated it to my BFF because I met her in Hawaii and she introduced me to Richard Marx’s music.

This was a great video! You forgot to mention the album Get Up! Back in 1980s we had it so awesome here in Canada. We had Bryan Adams, John Candy and Wayne Gretzky. Edmonton was kind of the center of all the activity we used to listen to all this on a radio station called 630 CHED. And Saskatchewan we can pick up that station from Alberta and it was awesome. We had much music to think for a lot of music in Canada. It was a magical time. So for us in Canada Bryan Adams is huge and so many bands came and went but he's still at it.

I liked Kool and the Gang but it was JT's VOICE that made me love the band. I can only put The Isley's above Kool and the Gang's flawless symmetry of sound and voice. I hated what happened because it destroyed both of their careers...a useless pissing contest and for my personal opinion I choose JT. He's one of my all time favorite male singers❤ Cherish the love y'all 11/24 16:42
