I completely hear you. They are living things and should be given every care for a long happy life. But sometimes people’s circumstances change and the pond must be closed. In this case koi are best given a new pond for life. Or if a pond is mistakenly overstocked it’s better for the koi welfare to be re-homed. 👍

100% agree but I had to let my koi go, it was heartbreaking. I wanted to take them with me to Thailand but unfortunately it just wasn't feasible. Luckily I found an experienced and dedicated enthusiast and they all went to the same very nice pond.

Hi, The orange/red you refer to (beni/hi - red) is a colour on koi that doesn’t surface more with age as one sees with sumi. This is regardless of the bloodline/breeder. The hi plates are fixed and what you see is what you get, that's why the quality of the hi plates is very important as they can disappear/break up (as you mention). There are traits in some bloodlines where hi plates can expand slightly with the development of the sashi and kiwa - but this is not the same as completely new hi plates emerging and the movement is often minimal. Isa Showa are considered some of the very best in the world, and good quality examples will possess excellent beni. However, as hobbyists, we must remember that beni from any breeder can become weak over time or break up entirely, nothing is guaranteed, so looking for warning signs when the koi is younger and throughout its development is important if we want 'mileage' from our koi. I do have a follow up question if you don't mind.. are there any indicators to look for in the beni that would alert someone to possibly losing some of the color? Ive seen some koi that have orange scales that look like the sumi scales coming up. Does that mean the beni is dissappearing? Ty

@@high_fructose_corn_syrup Hi, There are a few indicators regarding beni disappearing or beni that won't stand the test of time. Young fish with shallow or no sashi, young fish with overly exaggerated kiwa, young fish where the white ground shows through the gaps in the beni scales when the koi bends, and young fish with incredibly intense beni (although this will depend on the bloodline). These are just a few random indicators, as each fish must get assessed on its own merit. Interestingly, many of these attributes are actually 'talked up' by koi salesman as good points. Koi with such attributes may look finished and good for koi shows, but if you have hopes for longevity, they will most likely disappoint. The white ground won't disappear unless other colours cover it (like sumi). The condition and capabilities of the white will depend on the genetics of the koi and factors such as pond environment and food etc. It's a pretty big topic to cover, but if you think about how koi must look their best for a koi show, and that might only happen for a small window in any given year, it's easy to see how keeping the white skin in show condition year round is almost impossible. However, one thing any hobbyist can do to improve the condition of their koi is to maintain a clean system. Dirty systems = dirty skin!
