SLPP NEC Extends Executive Tenure, Sets Regulations for 2025 Elections
SLPP NEC Extends Executive Tenure, Sets Regulations for 2025 Elections
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) recently held a meeting at the party’s headquarters on Wallace Johnson Street, Freetown, to address critical issues related to internal governance and preparations for the 2025 elections.
During the meeting, the NEC approved a six-month extension of the tenure for all executive bodies, including Sectional, Zonal, Constituency, District, Branch, Regional, and National levels. This extension is intended to provide sufficient time for internal elections across these tiers of the party.
The NEC also instructed the National Executive to submit a detailed timeline for conducting lower-level elections, along with the necessary rules and regulations, by the second week of January 2025.
As part of its governance reforms, the NEC reaffirmed its commitment to reviewing the party’s August 2020 constitution. This review will incorporate feedback from regional and other stakeholders while ensuring alignment with the party’s existing constitution and Sierra Leone’s 1991 Constitution.
To maintain order within the party, the NEC issued strict guidelines regarding leadership and flagbearer campaigns. Party members were prohibited from campaigning for leadership positions until officially authorized by the NEC. Additionally, party resources cannot be used for unauthorized campaigns. Leaders at all levels-regional, district, constituency, chiefdom, zonal, and sectional-were instructed to enforce these rules.
“Members found violating these directives will face severe disciplinary actions, including possible disqualification,” the NEC resolution stated.
The Council emphasized the importance of unity within the party and urged members to focus on maintaining peace and stability in Sierra Leone as the country prepares for its next electoral cycle.
The resolutions were signed and released by Umaru Napoleon Koroma Esq., the National Secretary-General of the SLPP.
