Making A Kitchen Knife
Переглядів 3,1 тис.8 місяців тому
Hi! In this video I make a kitchen knife from 80CrV2 carbon steel. Handle is made out of birch bark and I used brass rivets. I wanted to make a forged pattern on the sides of the blade to give it a bit of character. This was first kitchen knife I have ever made from scratch. Music in this video is my own production: soundcloud.com/n0tle/vatsari?

Hi! My channel reached 1000 subs recently. Thanks for that! In this video I make the double leuku. It consists of leuku and puukko knives and one sheath. The handles of both knives are made out of spalted birch, birch bark, moose/reindeer antler...
Making A Puukko
Переглядів 167 тис.Рік тому
Hi! In this video I make a puukko knife and a sheath from a scratch. I am a quite novice at blade making. The blade is 80CrV2 carbon steel. Before quenching I normalized the steel with three cycles at the gas forge. I used heated canola oil for the quench. After quench I tempered the blade at 200 celsius for 2 hours. That heat treatment should give hardness of about 60 HRC. The handle is made o...

Hi everyone and happy new year! In this video I restorate a old finnish 'puukko' knife. Thank you. I thought that wood looked a bit soft. You would probably have been able to stabilize it with resin before use but that's a lot of work. Jim Bell (Australia)

    I believe you should try Trilon B for rust removal from steel (don't put noniron in it tho). You just drop rust steel in it for couple hours then just rinse rust away with cloth. Can take from solution by bare hand (unlike acid) and if you forgot steel in there for year nothing will happened to it besides rust got out. And same solution can be used years. Esp great for rust pliers restoration (without dismantling it) that magically start moving like a new.

    Nice looking knife, but it deserved a better heat treatment, in a temperature controlled kiln. The handle, although nice in color, texture and general shape, it looks too bulky and unfinished with those sharp edges, it will hurt the hand if used for prolonged periods, been there, done that. I mean it as a constructive critique, not bashing your work. Cheers!

      Thanks for the feedback! Some of my equipments are quite "primitive" especially forge. Findig right temperatures are not the easiest task.. Those sharp edges was my idea to challenge myself because in my opinion it is harder to make symmetrical sharp shape than round shape (with my equipments). Never done shape like that before. I know that it is not the best shape for hands but it feels surprisingly good though :)

    Nie nawiercasz większych otworów w stalowej rękojeści żeby była lżejsza,a ostrze cięższe? Nóż jest lepiej wyważony i łatwiej się nim pracuje.🤔

      I made light sanding to wood to the joint before gluing and then moisturized it because i used polyurethan glue. The joint would be indeed more secure if the oil wasnt used..

    Did you glue the leather on the wood for the sheath? If yes, what kind of glue? Otherwise, how is it holding together?

    • @kiehicraft
      @kiehicraft 2 місяці тому

      Actually I put a little bit of glue between the leather and the wood. Glue is not necessary in the case where deep grooves are made in the wooden part, where the wet leather is pressed and sewed tightly. When the leather dries it tightens tightly around the wood and into the groove. But one way or another, the glue makes the joint more secure :)

    When doing the flap, you should have punched a hole in the corners, before cutting. By cutting a sharp corner, you've introduced a weakness, which will probably result in it splitting over time. Still, you're a beginner, so you'll learn yet.
