Making A Kitchen Knife
Hi! In this video I make a kitchen knife from 80CrV2 carbon steel. Handle is made out of birch bark and I used brass rivets. I wanted to make a forged pattern on the sides of the blade to give it a bit of character.
This was first kitchen knife I have ever made from scratch.

Knife Making | Simple Puukko And Sheath

In this video I make a knife and a sheath for it. The blade is 80crv2 carbon steel and mirror finished. Handle is made out of birch burl which has little bit of spalt. I made bolster from moose antler and put birch bark between. Sheath is made out of vegetable tanned cow leather and plywood inlay. Music in this video is my own production. In this video I make a damascus knife and a sheath for it. The damascus steel is forged from 1084 carbon steel and 15N20 steel and consists of 224 layers. On handle I used oak, spalted birch, birch bark, moose antler and brass pommel. Hi! In this video I make a puukko knife and a sheath from a scratch. I am a quite novice at blade making. The blade is 80CrV2 carbon steel. Before quenching I normalized the steel with three cycles at the gas forge. I used heated canola oil for the quench. After quench I tempered the blade at 200 celsius for 2 hours. In this video I make a puukko knife from a finnish puronvarsi knife blade and a sheath for it. Knife handle is made out of reindeer antler, vulcanized fiber, wenge (dark wood) and curly birch. The knife is beautiful!! But the Scandi had to be lowered. The Finnish knife is the Scandi descents, I think. You make really good knives!!! Keep doing it, or you rarely get new knives. 😅

Technically speaking only one of those is a leuku but they both look good
When doing the flap, you should have punched a hole in the corners, before cutting. By cutting a sharp corner, you've introduced a weakness, which will probably result in it splitting over time. Still, you're a beginner, so you'll learn yet.

Beautiful build. I have only made one sheath with a wooden blade insert very early on in my leather journey. All my other sheaths have been taco style with a welt. I will have to make another one. Thanks 🎸🔪

I know that this is an old video but here goes anyway. I’m building quite a few knives a month lately and while I don’t have access to that particular type of Birch, I can use a spalted Maple that is almost identical. As you have mentioned the softness of the “Spalted” material and I have noticed it as well. I am intending to try out a product called “Cactus Juice” that actually hardens softer wood. I would like to purchase some of that fancy birch but the price from the supplier I use is outrageous. So my Maple will be almost a direct replacement. Well you might want to try that Cactus Juice on some of the softer stuff so that it can be made to be useful for a knife handle.
That is true and I definitely will try that cactus juice when I own the equipments, vacuum chamber etc.

Hi.In the late sixties I worked with a Norwegian guy who described Leuku as being about 8 inches long.Now I see examples of a much broader range than I had thought he meant.What size do you think was most commonly used by Sami people.Both length and thickness of blade.
Hi! The function of the leuku is to act as a billhook and therefore it is good for it to have size and mass. The heavier it is, the easier it is to cut wood. I think that the range of the lenght is somewhere between 160-300mm and the thickness 4-5mm.
