Secrets of the Glam Drone Guitar Sound (Gerry Shephard, Glitter Sound)
In this video, I dive into a powerful, distorted drone sound that once dominated the charts during the 1970s glam rock era. Despite its association with iconic tracks, this unique sound gradually faded from the music scene. But in this video, I'm bringing it back! I show you EXACTLY how to make the sound using only three simple tricks and no expensive gear. Then I do a live performance using the sound but in a totally different context -- a version of The Human League's classic 'Being Boiled'. Finally I end with a few words on an ethical dilemma I had making this video.

      @@carriersignal Ah, that’s not actually by Chic! I didn’t want to run into copyright problems so I used something I produced for an artist a few years ago since the bass was very authentically Bernard Edwards. In fact, from memory, we used a Stingray which was exactly the same bass Edwards used, and I specified “make it sound like Bernard!” The track was called Radio. It was used with permission but I don’t know if it got released. This unfortunately seems to be the way of the world. Finished productions, languishing in an archive somewhere, not making it to the ‘shops’.

    I watched your earlier video on choosing a synth and noticed there were a lot of ‘plosive’ mic pops, but on the newer videos the vocal during story time is much cleaner. So the hand mic is just a prop now? If so, it’s a good one, always like to read the mic text and check the portraits for clues. Hope you have lots more stories to tell, highly enjoyable. The real issue was not the pops (which I could have fixed tbh) it was the fact that I kept forgetting to hold it in front of my mouth when I became ‘lost in the moment’ fiddling around with noise gates 😂

    Funny story. Producing a track for a DJ back in '94, he played me a record and said "I want THIS sound" (Lately Bass) I didn't know it was a TX81Z , which I didn't own anyway. So I proceeded to edit a Yamaha TG55 preset called Synth Badbass - playing with the velocity to filter cut off, envelope, and note length until I got a similar sound. This was quite a pain because he wanted the exact sound, and an unnecessary pain as I only found out recently from the DJ in question, my good friend Phil Jubb. Whilst sat scratching my head over a TG55 back then, I needed only look into the corner of my studio at the (so I thought) redundant DX11 leaning against the wall. The f**king keyboard version of the TX81Z!!! Why Phil waited 30 years to tell me this is another mystery. I ended up giving that synth away, never knowing it made that sound. FFS. You can hear the track here would love your thoughts: ua-cam.com/video/CO1qP860T14/v-deo.htmlsi=A7422XK8LqdzEzBJ By the way I'm new and am loving your content. Just as an additional point - it was Mike Leander who "invented" that sound, before Gerry (RIP) was recruited. The first Gary Glitter album was recorded by Glitter and Leander, along with session musicians (incl a very young Trevor Horn on bass guitar) and I remember reading that Leander, who couldn't play guitar, tuned all the strings to the same note, in order to play guitar on some tracks. And that's how it came to be. Gerry, John and the other future members of the Glitter Band were recruited for Top of the Pops and live appearances - and weren't even referred to as the Glitter Band until a while later. And they didn't play on the GG albums at that time (apart from his live one) - although they did on their own albums. No doubt though that Gerry came up with the nuances over time. Apparently the Star Guitar used for those tracks live was pretty horrible to play and for most of the set a regular guitar (and tuning) would get used. Great to see some appreciation for that sound - really was the sound of my youth and such a shame it's not used more. Nice BB version too. And just to say I agree with what you say about the moral dilemma - I grew up listening to GG and went to see him in concert in the 80s and 90s but haven't been able to listen to his records since it was all revealed. No contrition, no apologies either. Loathsome individual. The Glitter Band still used to play live a lot as a separate entity long after he was banged up but their bookings suffered hugely, as did radio play of their many hits. When they and GG only ever saw each other on stage - traveling separately, not even rehearsing together a lot of the time. Anyway, once again, great job in highlighting this sound.

      @DistortThePreamp День тому

      @@philmarsh5593 Yes you’re absolutely right about Leander. I don’t know about Trevor and I think of myself (clearly wrongly) as knowing his whole story. The star guitar was horrible and I’ve seen him playing normal guitars a lot, but surely not in standard? He’s always playing the slide parts and from his fingering it looks like the glitter tuning… do you have a source? Really appreciate you watching and making the comment. One day I’ll have a researcher to keep my hallucinations in check 🙄

    Aaaaaah the lately bass! I’m using the Arturia DX7 and have imported all the ROM cartridge presets - I trawled the net for everything! The DX7 has a sound that is very malleable and has a unique flexibility that lends itself to additional processing like the distortion etc. We use them for twinkly sounds, basses but also for ambient washed out sounds, which it excels at. Only recently learned how much FM is used in modern electro.

    • @DistortThePreamp
      @DistortThePreamp 2 дні тому

      Oh yes! The DX7 can’t quite do Lately because the operators are different, but it can get very close with a patch that from memory is called Solid Bass! People associate FM with bells and glistening pads, but it’s so great at bass too! What I love about FM synths is the articulation you can get from the velocity assuming the patch has been set up in that way…

      Fantastic! I took out a segment about string tension because it was too boring, but if you’re gonna ‘try this at home’ you will probably have to loosen the truss rod about a quarter of a turn because it’s quite a slack tuning! However if you don’t wanna do that then tune to B instead of A which balances strings being detuned with strings being upturned and doesn’t affect the overall tension too much :) It’s so awesome that you’re thinking of trying this

    Just a wonder. Those of us with a software model d and several midi controllers, will assigning all the dials on the software to a midi controller dial effectively achieve the same result. Sure we won’t have the same analog flux or de tune, but from a pure learning perspective will it give me the same learning experience? I would love to buy a whole room of synths and gates, step sequencers, drum machines and the works, but realistically the lack of cash flow as an aspiring musician sort of rules it all out. As you said a but too late for some of us, owning a plug-in has just about zero resale value so trying to make a sandwich out of the dog’s breakfast is about all some of us can hope for. Any practical advice is appreciated. (Btw: love the channel and learning so much so thank you immensely)

    • @DistortThePreamp
      @DistortThePreamp 2 дні тому

      This is a really interesting question. I think it could, and to be honest you wouldn’t really have to assign ALL the dials. The Arturia V collection imitations are pretty good (though I would bypass the effects section) and their MiniMoog for example is easily good enough for a production. I’ve never used their custom pre-mapped keyboard but I hear great things about it. The premise of the video assumed that the viewer wanted to buy a first analog synth. But if you don’t, then I think mapping software controllers to an analog classic soft synth might be a good thing to try. Do you have a midi controller and keyboard?

    • @innovationsinm
      @innovationsinm 2 дні тому

      @@DistortThePreamp I know the original premise was for purchasing a first hardware synthesizer at a reasonable low cost. Sadly for me being in Canada, though I am originally from England, is availability of used synths are pretty slim and can cost almost as much as new when factoring in P&H. I did grab the Moog Model D app from MoogMusic when it initially launched for the iPad that works on Mac with M2 chip very well for sub $20. Now I am not likely to try using this for live performances, it will hopefully work well enough as a learning tool. I have got a Novation Launchkey49 and Control XL (that were bought used for a reasonable cost) so ample pots, sliders and buttons along with 4 octaves of note keys. As you’re said, if the goal is to learn before spending the money on a larger synthesizer, then hopefully this model D is a reasonable starting point. If I get back to London to visit family, I will have to look you up and buy you a pint.. cheers mate.
