Geode Guys: Mining Choya Geodes

In this video Dusty shows how easily Geodes can be excavated once you've hit the soft money layer (ancient ash tuft). But don't be fooled, removing the 10'-15' Rhyolite overburden layer is no easy task (ie heavy machinery needed). During this trip to the mine two Grandsons (Memo and Hector Carillo) of the original claim owners, act as our tour guides (and lighting crew) in showing what the mini...

    Hey Dusty, awesome video. Only decent one I have seen on how to polish a geode on a vibra-lap. LOTS of fantastic info you provided us with. You make it look so easy! I have had some success from watching this. However, I am having difficulty with something’s still. The weights have been an issue since many Geodes are anything but level to glue them on to. Trying to invent some sort of adjustable “Geode Saddle” but have yet to come with a good prototype. Anyway, REALLY appreciate all your info. Maybe someday you could make more showing troubleshooting ideas for us spastic beginners. Oh yeah…bought all of my Geodes from the Geode Guys, awesome rocks. Will provide pics as soon as I am happy with my polishing techniques.

    • @DustyAtkinson
      @DustyAtkinson 22 дні тому

      One thing I've used with some success is plumbers putty to fill in some of the gaps and then hot glue the weight to the geode/putty. It really is a time-consuming process to do it correctly.... Oh and another thing I'll sometimes do is cut or grind a little bit off the back of the geode or thunder egg to give it a little bit of a flat surface for the weight to rest on. Let me know if I can help in any other way!

    Isn’t it super dangerous to wear gloves when working with a circular saw? I heard that if it gets stuck in the saw the damage could be far worse than if you were bare handed. Not meaning to criticise, just worried about you! Stay safe plz :) But otherwise yea that’s a big nodule, beautiful colours too!

    • @DustyAtkinson
      @DustyAtkinson Місяць тому

      Yes in most cases this is true. In fact I can attest to it in real life, my Dad lost part of one of his fingers to a drill press while wearing gloves. There's two reasons that make it ok in this situation (in my opinion that is): 1) Rock saws don't have jagged teeth like a wood saw that will catch a glove and pull it into the saw. 2) these gloves are thin enough that they would just rip before pulling my fingers into the rotation. Even with the above mitigating circumstances yes in a perfect world I wouldn't be wearing gloves, but as I've mentioned in other posts I work with rocks all day everyday and if I don't wear gloves the rock slurry just dries my hands out until they crack and are incredibly painful. Oh and lastly, if you're not familiar with rock saws the blades are actually smooth metal impregnated with diamond. Meaning that even if my finger did brush up on the blade for a second the worst it would probably do is give me a bad burn (much safer than a wood saw).

    does the geode hold a glow green for a couple of seconds after you turn off the black light? I have one that does, but it doesn't glow green under the light. Actually an electric blue under the light, then glows green in the dark. crazy right?

      Sorry just saw this! If you don't have a rock saw with a really thin blade my next best advice would be to push them all into some clay or plumbers putty and cut them one at a time with a diamond cut off wheel on a Dremel (spraying with water to keep cool).
