@@kennethabarnhart fishing on the west coast for saltwater fish it is technique, using light leader to get more bites. Like I use 65/80lb Braid for main line and then typically a 30lb Flourocarbon leader about 3 feet long with a small circle hook so the sardine is attempted to be presented in the most natural way. It isn’t the same set up as a freshwater Dry/wet fly fishing set up using a tapered leader or multiple pieces of line to your main line. I know some guys target saltwater fish of all sizes with a traditional fly fishing set up but this is just a term used for the set up I described.

@@scottbuxton6535 you can use a bigger split ring but I don’t like huge terminal tackle near my hook, so it doesn’t affect the jig or give the fish any reason not to eat the jig due to appearance. You won’t be able to put more than 40-50lbs of pressure on a fish with most reels max drag capacity so you will be safe with that size split ring and the swivel is out away from the jig, and that is just the size I like to have on my rigs, you can lighten it up a bit if you want. There is multiple ways to rig your gear and catch fish, this is just how I do, best of luck man!

Usually I use about 3 feet of leader, both on jigs and fly line, you can get away with a shorter leader dropping jigs at night though!

Once you cast past everyone else and work the drift correctly you won’t have hardly any tangles and you catch way more fish. A few years ago I landed 23 yellowfin tunas on the grande out of 96 fish caught, days like that is why I’m a believer. @@Obseadianfishing i haven't gotten on a yft bite like that sounds great. I watched the video makes sense, probably a lot of inexperienced anglers in general use spinners and don't have any clue of were there line is, thats i see dudes just opening there bail on spinners and not mending there lines cause a lot of problems on sport boats. my last trip was a 2 day and i caught 8 BFT 6 over 175. out fished three pro team anglers

I haven’t got on a big tuna bite like that this year…Next year I’m planning on doing some 3 day trips, this year I have done mostly 1.5’s and it’s just not a long enough trip to run to the grounds and get a full night of fishing in.

@@jacobreisberg2428 I have used them before, I think they are a cool concept. Do I think they are worth the extra money, not really. But I’m a die hard Shimano guy and the gear I use has always been good to me so I stick with what works for me. There is a ton of ways to get the job done fishing though so fish how YOU like as long as it works, good luck bro!

I was there in 2021 and 2022. Was warm and dry in 2021. 70 degrees at 9500 feet some days. 2022 was snow daily and limited access to high country because of the deep snows....Im going back in October to give it another shot near Bayfield Colorado

@@SalBlydenburgh Hey man, I would recommend 30lb Seagar Gold label Flouro and 50-65lb braid for your main line. The gold label has a smaller diameter so that’s why I like it!

@@Obseadianfishing sounds good ,just like a 3ft leader of floor straight to the braid? I normally use like a 50 to 100 yd top shot of mono but I've been noticing guys not using the mono lately

@@SalBlydenburgh I don’t use top shot ever, just my preference but I do think it can be handy when catching big bluefin tuna. For the lighter stuff I highly recommend braid to swivel to Flouro leader, it makes casting easier and you can get out farther. Just keep the pressure on the fish because there is no stretch in braid and barely any in Flouro. And 3 feet is typically my leader length because I can cast that amount and retie after a fish if I need to, good luck bro🤙🏼 hit me up if you have any more questions

@@SalBlydenburgh I use it because I like to run a little heavier leader if I can that has the same diameter as the size I was using with blue label, like I used to run 25lb blue label for yellow tail but lost a lot of fish so I switched to 40lb gold label and have been landing more fish this season, hope it helps! Absolutely bro, I land 9/10 fish that I hook on a circle hook, I’ve pulled a lot of J hooks out of fish mid-fight. So I use a circle hook whenever possible with bait, I think the hook up ratio and the landing ratio is better.

@@Obseadianfishing I agree. For the past few years I have only used circle hooks for yellowtail and it works out so much better. A nice clean hook set every time.

I went fishing on the Pursuit out of 22nd Street landing two weeks ago, and a guy that day was trolling his near Catalina island and hooked a tuna but broke him off bc he was running 40lb leader… He told me he caught 3 bluefins out of his buddies center console with it so I pulled it around when we moved for the rest of the trip. DUDE it swims like a champ! I had no idea they swam that good, I haven’t caught anything on it, so that’s why I haven’t really talked about it but I will be pulling it a lot more especially after seeing him hook up on his, I was pulling a lure I bought in hawaii and didn’t have any bites on it. If I snag one on it, I’ll let you know!

So I start with tying my main line to a swivel, then I use about 3 feet of Flouro leader, usually 40lb, I tie my Owner mutu ring circle hook on, and then I tie another 3 feet to the ring on the hook of leader to my jig or weight. I misspoke for sure there, I meant to say, I tie my swivel with a flouro leader to the ringed circle hook and then tie another flouro piece from the hook to the jig or weight to create a drop shot style rig. Hope that clears things up, my bad man!

Yeah man that rip roller has been good this year! And the SK has been producing fish too, I have one that is all chewed up in silver and chrome that is my favorite to drop😂

@@kylewebster3482 yeah man, twin assists on the bottom have definitely caught a lot of fish, I like the treble on the bottom because I have caught almost half my bluefins on the wind up and the treble has worked well for me landing those fish. There is a ton of ways to fish, these videos I make are just what has worked well for me🤙🏼

I would recommend at a minimum I take with me… 1: 7’0 Medium Heavy Spinning rod (I use a Shimano Terez) with a 10,000 Shimano Saragosa with 500yards of 50lb Braid. For smaller grade fish 10-50lbs 2: 7’0 to 8’0 Heavy spinning rod, I use a Shimano Teramar and 20,000 Shimano Saragosa with 500 yards of 65lb braid, I have caught up to 160lbers on this combo. 3: 5’8” Extra Extra Heavy Shimano Trevala spinning rod with a 25,000 Shimano Saragosa with 500yards of 80lb Braid is my set up of choice for dropping jigs at night. @@Tony67032 a 20,000 with work but you will need to run 65lb braid probably due to line capacity, I run a 25,000 Saragosa with 500 yards of 80lb braid, I try to have 500 yards on all my reels so in case I hook a big one I won’t get spooled!

@@timeves6012 Hey man, I’m running 2/0 on my jigs, I have seen guys use UP to 5/0, I recommended a 2/0 or 3/0, I like a smaller hook signature on my jigs so I use trebles on the smaller side

@@ahmadghanem2414 I do use an assist hook on the top and a treble on the bottom because I like my hooks close to the jig especially on the wind up, I have hooked a lot of fish on the treble versus the assist hook

@@anthonytrigueiro7896 on my Tomahawk trip last weekend, the compact jigs were getting bit better, specifically the 300gr Daiwa SK Jigs, but saw guys catch a few on Knifes as well, I didn’t get an BF bites, we only found 2 schools our entire 1.5 day trip and the boat caught 10 total

@@anthonytrigueiro7896 sorry about the late reply man, but I have 100% had trips like that and ones where I couldn’t buy a bite for whatever reason, I try to learn from every trip and stay consistent going all season in hopes of hitting the jack pot a time or two😂

You got it dialed in man🤙🏼 I’m going to have a SK Jig on one of rods a lot more often and then a 400/500gr knife. Just to have a couple options for presentations, I went on the tomahawk last weekend and the smaller jigs were the way to go

@@socalfishincrew5410 I definitely see that side of the coin, I’m kind of sold on the drop shot style, because the best day I have had bluefin fishing (160#,100#,100#) were all hooked and caught on drop shot sardines and I like the idea that my stuff won’t get tangled up on the way down

@@Obseadianfishing maybe it would matter more if you were belly hooking it but if you knows hook it it kinda forces the bait to sit upright so maybe it actually produces a better action. I’ll give the dropshot a shot and let you know.

@@smahiz dude I catch hate every trip for my spinning rods, don’t be afraid to do your thing! The clear bobber that fills with water will help you cast a lot further man. Fly line is one of the deadliest tactics when the fish are feeding on the live bait chum, good luck and appreciate the sub!

Yeah man! I caught mine on a 400gr Mastercraft jig in silver/glow “candy cane” one fish bit on the drop, and one bit on the reel up

Thanks bro! The editing is super time consuming😂 I use a GoPro 11, on my last trip this weekend on the tomahawk I tried to get a couple different shot angles so it wasn’t all chest rig! You been out lately?

@@ObseadianfishingI hear ya amigo! The editing part is a total time suck! I had an 11 mini but it died so I got a 10 and still use my old 8. I now use the head strap rig almost exclusively. Gets a better view of the water and the fish than the chest mount. I like that you use the spinning setup for live bait. I usually do that with the dorado. Good times… I only have one bluefin trip this year. A 3 day limited load on the Polaris supreme later in July. Looking forward to that for sure! Otherwise just been doing smaller trips like overnights and such. When is your next trip? It’d be cool to see you at the rail sometime… 😎

@@halibutman_fishing coffee grinders are killer for flyline but eat your Wheaties! No rail rods that way and the crew don't want to deal with it. I have two Penn battle 6k I use for flyline and surface irons on 20-30lbs setups for yellowtail and schoolie tuna. You're spoiled of you get an 80+ bft on it

Those spinning reels, daiwa certate, saltiga and shimano stella , twinpower are just beasts. Daiwa caldia , pen slammers III are just insane power
