This UA-cam channel is a resource for rowers and coaches which will provide a common sense approach to rowing from the first steps to advanced competences. It will suit anyone seeking to understand and develop their technical skills.
It is planned to continue developing new online short videos in an FAQ's style of presentation, which both coaches and athletes can use as a foundation for their skills acquisition.
John Hill (@OxfordRowCoach) has coached at a wide range of levels for 30yrs. He welcomes feedback, prompts and enquiries for skill or topic specific videos to be provided - e.g. What are the priorities for beginners? (There are four); How do crews balance a boat? (It has nothing to do with handle heights unless you're really good); What to focus on in early development crews? (Sitting still and stabilising the boat); How do you find the extra gear to gain that "Bump"? (You change the shape of the stroke profile) etc.

Rowing Tank Sessions (Sweep) - Jargon - the blade (oar)
Переглядів 1,4 тис.2 роки тому
A brief overview of the essential parts of the oar and how they should become your best friend.
Rowing Tank Sessions (Sweep) - The Extraction (the end of the stroke)
Переглядів 2,7 тис.2 роки тому
Achieving consistently good extractions is a black art that requires some explanation from a coach and some experimentation from the rower. The important point is to follow the handle path and not do anything suddenly. If it's done right, it'll happen smoothly.
Rowing Tank Sessions (Sweep) - Propulsion (The Backstory)
Переглядів 2,3 тис.2 роки тому
When you start rowing, some movements need to be made quite deliberately until they become automatic. The best way to move a boat is to use the appropriate muscle groups in the right order. Here I explain how the body needs to be trained in the correct technique for safe and effective propulsion.
Rowing Tank Sessions (Sweep) - The Placement (the "Wall and the Shelf")
Переглядів 2,9 тис.2 роки тому
You can't have a good stroke after a bad placement. How we start a stroke will determine how effective it is going to be. Placing the blade accurately in anticipation of applying propulsive force is fundamental to good technical rowing. Here is a method for picturing what you should be aiming to do every time you arrive at frontstops.
Rowing Tank Sessions (Sweep) - The Stroke plus Feathering
Переглядів 13 тис.2 роки тому
Feathering is an added complication for beginners and getting it wrong can cause major problems. Why do we do it, then? Here's a simple approach you should find useful.
Rowing Tank Sessions (Sweep) - The Biomechanics
Переглядів 2,5 тис.2 роки тому
Using the right parts of the body at the right time ensures coordination and promotes stability - both fundamental to rowing. Exaggerate the separation and sequencing to help your body learn these new movements.
Rowing Tank Sessions (Sweep) - Setting the boat
Переглядів 3,5 тис.2 роки тому
Being able to keep the boat stable if the most important contribution that you can make when you are in a crew who are learning the basics of rowing. The more stable the boat, the more they can practise good technique. So take a little time to master this simple but valuable skill.
Rowing Tank Sessions (Sweep) - The Path of the Handle
Переглядів 4,2 тис.2 роки тому
The handle is what you hold and what you control. Knowing what it does and where it should go is the basis for learning how to row.
Rowing Tank Sessions (Sweep) - Introduction
Переглядів 1,7 тис.2 роки тому
With 30yrs experience of coaching beginners, the Oxford Row Coach is sharing his priorities for early learning. This initial series of four videos will provide the basics needed to give anyone the essentials to sit in a boat, with others, and enjoy their first sessions. Of use to coaches and athletes alike.
The placement - shelf aware
Переглядів 5352 роки тому
The principles of the wall and the shelf are explained in this video ua-cam.com/video/A5oLvVHUFIc/v-deo.html Teaching your hands where to find the shelf is something that requires (a) conscious effort and (b) endless repetition. It is challenging to do this in a boat that is anything less than totally stable, so maybe do more technical work in pairs or in sixes? You should also ensure that you ...

A mix of cardio and core exercises designed and ordered to provide excellent benefits in just 40mins. (N.B. warm up before starting exercises.) 2 Circuits of 20 stations. 55" on and 5" off. Timing by Tabata. Comments by the Oxford Row Coach.
Common extraction mistakes
Переглядів 7243 роки тому
Here the four main faults that arise at the extraction are demonstrated. I have a spreadsheet listing 16 issues that arise from poor technique between the end of the stroke, the extraction and the recovery. This explains the mechanisms and consequences of the various errors. The spreadsheet will be loaded onto my website (and a link provided here) soon. (Contact me if you want a copy.)
The Extraction
Переглядів 4643 роки тому
Most issues to do with imbalance and poor technique occur at the end of the stroke / drive phase - i.e. around the extraction. Here I describe the target technique. I have a spreadsheet listing 16 issues that arise from poor technique between the end of the stroke, the extraction and the recovery. This will be loaded onto my website (and a link provided here) soon. (Contact me if you want a copy.)

Superb, I know it won't occur that easily 😂
Thank you
Fabulous Thank you!
If I remember correctly, the Maçon blade was introduced in a rowing event by the germans. The blade was so efficient that everybody adopted it. The name “Macon” was given to this type of spoon in relation to this event.
This is an interesting version of the origins of the Macon spoon shape. Was the event located in Macon or was there another reason for giving it its name?
I have no memory of subscribing to this channel, but that was actually quite interesting.
Apologies Trig. I have no idea how that could have happened. I have only a very few subscribers ATM and nothing I'm aware of to "push" my vids on the unsuspecting. Glad you found it interesting though, and thanks for the comment!
@@johnhill8124 I am subscribed. I may well have done that myself. I subscribe to all kinds of things!
@@qwertyTRiG Well there's more things on the way. I have just this minute been talking to my "creative director" about editing Bio-mechanics Pt2. Stay tuned for more interesting stuff!
