Thanks so much for this video. I've never made socks but decided to join a MAL for socks in Feb. I've had such a time getting the first row nice & snug but was having such a batlle getting it right. I was almost ready to call it quits but after watching thia video I've got it right! Thank you😊
Yay!!! I'm so glad you were finally able to get it. Have fun knitting the rest of your socks--and thank you for the nice comment! ☺
@henliahandmade5983 thank you!❤️
You're very talented, very soothing and you videos are very informative! Glad to have found you! Keep up the great work! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you very much! I’m happy to share my knitting knowledge to help spread a love of this craft❤
Up, up, up!
😘
This s massively frustrating to listen to, the topic isn’t genuinely addressed until 4:46. Could I suggest you write out a script so we don’t have to listen to the stream of consciousness rambling. I honestly don’t mean that to sound rude. It’s just so convoluted.
Thank you for sharing your honest feedback. I’ll look into re-recording this in a more streamlined way ❤
What is the reason for casting on the extra stitch and then moving it to back needle? Why not just cast on 64 sts.?
The reason I do it is because it makes for a very smooth join. I find when I don't cast on that extra stitch, there's a little dip between the first and last stitches. It's purely a personal preference though. Sometimes I can't be bothered with that extra step because for something like a sock that won't get much visibility, a tiny imperfection makes no difference☺ Great question! Thanks for asking it.
Thank you for the info, makes sense. I’m going to try it 😊
@@dianeoconnell3686I hope it works out well for you 😊
When you come to the end of your stitches flip the yarn to the back over the needle you just finished, then hold it in place with your left hand, you will never have it out of position. It will be ready to knit the first stitch of the next needle. I can see you doing this but you didn’t speak on it. I use this technique myself.
Yes, that's an excellent point! Thank you for mentioning it. I'll be sure to include that tip when I update this tutorial ☺
I can't find your video showing how to cast on with magic loop. Thanks!
Oh, thanks for pointing that out. I'm uploading the cast-on video right now and it should be viewable by the time you see this =) Here's the link for it: ua-cam.com/video/K_T90q4c-_8/v-deo.html
Great explanation!! You could give the WS a pastel color in the print, I have found that really helpful. If you would put the index on the left of the chart you can temporarily stick a piece of paper on the right next to the chart (leave the rownumbers visible ofcourse) to cross of the row that is ready. This is very helpful when you have to not only knit pattern repeats to the left, but especially in height. What is your opinion on that?
Thanks for your comments! Using a lighter print for the wrong side is a great idea. Actually, in the shawl body instructions, I bolded the right-side row text. So thank you for pointing that out so I can update this particular page of instructions to match. Regarding your second suggestion, I'm sure it's also a great suggestion😁 but I don't fully understand. Can you clarify, please?
@@henliahandmade5983 Mindy, I'll email you with a few pictures to make myself clear.
@@EV-D-10 thank you for sharing your method with me! It's very clever. I love that it makes it very clear how many chart repeats you need to complete (and how many you've already completed). I wish I could attach your photo as a reference for anyone who's watching😊 But basically you create your own chart next to the straight side of the shawl (not the increasing slanted side) with as many columns as you need to complete your total chart repeats. For example, if the directions say to repeat the chart 3 times, you create 3 columns. Then, you mark off each row as you complete it. Once you've completed the chart, you'll have a mark in each box up the column indicating to begin the chart again from the bottom. I love this method! Thank you for sharing💗
@@henliahandmade5983 You are very welcome, glad to be of help!!
Love your weekender sweater! I just finally finished mine this weekend.
Thank you! I loved knitting and wearing my Weekender Light so much I made a second. I hope you're loving yours just as much! xoxo, Mindy
Hello from Toronto. I am always interested in more notions and tools. However, I guess we are all individual knitters and make personal choices. I received the neck light for Christmas and have not used it yet. Your video enlightened me to using it every day rather than just for car trips. I have tried the row counter that you showed but all those dang leave it’s totally crazy. I stick to my old reliable barrel style Row counter with a ring which I use to pin it to my project. Just a quick turn of the dial and I know what row I am on. I have never invested in those barber cord things because I have several sets of Knitter’s pride interchangeable Needles. If I want to try on a sweater, I just put the item on a long circular needle and then use the end caps to secure the ends. When I put the Needle tips back on the end i just knit the Project back onto whatever needle I’m using. Thanks for showing Molly’s Bags.. I am a real sucker for extra project bags.
Hi! So glad you're able to make more use of your Lumos Light now. I really do find mine so handy. The chain row counters take a little practice, but you can't go wrong with the good, ol' standby barrel counter! Having multiple sets of interchangeable needle cords is helpful, which could make silicon cords unnecessary. I find them more beneficial because of their extra-long lengths. With needle cords, I'd need to combine a couple to make my work fit over my head and shoulders when trying on a sweater. With the silicon cords, I only need to slip them onto one. But no need to change anything if your method works well for you. It's always fun to hear how other knitters prefer to work💗 Thanks for all your great feedback!
Very informative Mindy and a professional walk through. This pattern looks really appealing!!
Thank you! 😊
I love the hat!
Thank you, Jackie!
Very nice, thank you!! Also nice to see how a row/roundcounter like that works! ALso...lovely yarn 😍
You’re welcome and thank you! Happy knitting ❤
Get gift ideas! Ive paused and gone to purchase things throughout the video! Thank you!
That’s great! I’m so happy this little video has helped you do some holiday shopping 🎉
Thank you soooo much for sharing this. I have a favorite yarn company that their hanks always tangle when I try to wind. This trick worked so well.
You are so welcome! I’m glad it worked so well for you.
You are a good friend for showing off what they have made for you. <3 I have not tried the chain type row counters, aways use the abacus ones where you pull down a bead at a time each round , just shift the loop on your needle as you come to it, little notion moves up to register 10s, 20s 30s etc. Yes!! I also like the cords for shifting my work for trying on . Have that size and the next size up if using larger needles. Love all the colors they come in , it is so hard to pick , one spool is more than enough !! I have lengths needed in every project bag , longer pieces for body and 30" is fine for sleeves. I also paid around 10.?? for each, the 54 Yds for regular and 27 yds for the one for larger needles .
So glad you enjoyed the video. That’s super smart to have all the lengths of the tubing you need in each of your project bags! I think I’m going to pick up a couple more sets☺️ Happy knitting!
Oh, and I totally agree, with all those colors to choose from, it’s hard to decide!
Hi. I just found you today. I loved your reviews. I also have a neck lamp, and I can’t be without it. It is also good if the power goes out and everything is dark. You can wear it around your neck and go to the kitchen and make a salad or a sandwich quite easily. I had so many things to tell you in my head during your video. I think I have forgotten the rest of them. Except, I love your pink sweater. I love the style. Is the pattern available? Thanks. I have liked your video and subscribed to your videos. I am so glad I found you today!
Thank you for all your kind words! It really made my day reading them. I’m sorry it was just now, so long after you commented! I agree about the neck lamp, I use it for so many things. The pink sweater is Andrea Mowry’s Weekender Light. It’s available on Ravelry and on her website. It’s such a great sweater! Happy knitting!
Oh, and thank you for liking and subscribing! I appreciate that so much☺️
2:21 I cannot describe the messes I have made and the time spent, hours, untangling yarn. I've blamed the people who prepare the skeins as they don't seem to arrive in a state of readiness to be wound. Your method looks really promising and I am so grateful to have found you. Thank you!! I will report my next experience! Love to you!
Oh, I do hope it helps make your winding easier next time. There's nothing more frustrating than dealing with tangled yarn when all you want to do is start knitting with it already! xoxo
This has saved me SO many hours and so much frustration. Thank you. ❤
YAY!!! I’m so glad 💕
Hi Henlia, I watched you for the first time today and want to thank you for your wonderful ideas. I will look forward to seeing future youtube videos.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for taking a moment to say so☺️
Thanks! I use to do several of the snaps that you performed at the end to get everything in good order, next time I have a skein needing winding I’ll use your other steps.
Those snaps really help! I hope your next skein-winding session goes even smoother.
This is wonderful, thank you so much for sharing this. I’ve turned 2 hanks into balls, so easy following your instructions. 4 more to do. I thought I needed to buy a yarn winder, but I just needed your technique. Thanks again ❤
Yay! So happy to help making ball winding a bit easier for you. Happy making!
Goodness me, this was so helpful. Thank you! Last time, my first time, having to wind my yarn into a cake from a hank I nearly ended up divorced as I blamed all the mistakes I made on my poor darling husband whose only job was to stand still, arms out to hold the yarn 😅
Ha! Thanks for the chuckle. I do hope these tricks help you next time. Double check all the strands are running in the same direction around the loop created by the hank too. May you have many uneventful winding sessions moving forward ❤
This makes a lot of sense! I'm going to try it out the next time a wind a skein. I think it will be helpful to me because I use a lot of fingering weight yarn and it is really a pain when it gets tangles. Thank you.
I've been there and completely know what you mean. I hope this helps make your winding easier next time☺
Oh how I wish I had found this video two days ago 😂 Never mind, it will come in handy for next time 🤞🏻
Oh, darn! Well, now you'll have the know-how for next time. I hope it helps!
Thanks for sharing. Will let you know.
Please do. I hope it helps make yarn winding smoother for you!
Thank you!
You're welcome! I hope it helps💗
Thanks for that great tip....while I've not had too many issues winding hanks into balls with my swift, I HAVE had issues and so this technique of yours looks like it would do the trick for those hanks that get super tangled! Thanks!
Great! I do hope it helps😊
Very helpful. I'd been doing the vertical snap, but adding the horizontal "magic" pull made the yarn smoother yet. Thank you!
So glad it helped for you!🤗
Thank you for your garden tour. I am trying japanese indigo, weld, woad, corioposis, calendia, marigolds, black hollyhocks(reseeded from last yr)., All from seed, they are all very small except the hollyhocks. I have zinnia, never used then for dye. How do they work?
Oh, Anita, you have a beautiful dye garden planted! I admit I'm still saving up my zinnia in order to conduct my first zinnia dye experiment. From what I've read, a ratio weight 2:1 (zinnia: wool) will produce the best color. That's the ratio I plan to use when I've saved enough flowers. I really should have planted more this year. Please do let me know how it goes if you give them a try!
Yes, a stroll through your dye garden would be nice!!
I'll try to make that happen this summer. Thank you, I appreciate the feedback!
Sorry for spell correct typos above!
Haha-no worries 😘
Thank you for sharing your wisdom and plans.I would live to see your dye garden. I live in the PA mountains and our growing season is short like yours. I planted weld, woad, and Japanese indigo seeds so far. Nothing coming up yet.😢
Oh, I hope you have success! I have both weld and Japanese indigo seeds, but I’ve been too scared to try growing them 🤣I think I probably will need to start them next year, and put it on my calendar so I don’t forget! You’ll have to let me know how yours goes💗
That is gorgeous yarn Mindy!
Thank you, Cathy! It was a really fun one to create😊
I was a recipient of the fingering weight Mother's Day Love 2023 package from my hubby and I LOVED!!! IT. Thank you so much for your heartfelt thoughtfulness. I am a subscriber of your website and now your UA-cam channel and I am looking forward to growing with your company.
Thank you, Bonita! I'm so very glad you loved your box. Thank you for being part of our corner of the knitting space. I'm very happy you're here💗💗

Haha! They really are GREAT tools to have handy. Great minds for sure!💃

I needed this video.. thanks a million
You're welcome. I do hope it helps!
Recently I spent a total of 5 hours over 2 days winding a 440-yard hank of fingering-weight Linen Quill yarn into a ball. Instead of hanging the loop of yarn over the back of a chair, I lay it flat on my bed in a circle on top of a fleece blanket that keeps the loop of yarn from sliding around. I place a large Pyrex bowl upside down in the center of the circle to keep the yarn from crossing over on itself. I like having a bird's-eye view of the process. Once I start winding, I flip the loop of yarn over whenever I begin to feel it resisting, and that usually gets it winding smoothly again. Still, it's a pain because Linen Quill yarn sticks to itself like crazy. I have quite a few hanks of it to wind into balls, as I plan to make several Half+Half Triangles Wraps. From now on I am going to prep the yarn according to your instructions first, because I believe that doing so will eliminate most if not all of the twists and stickiness that cause trouble when winding this yarn. I will still continue to wind the yarn on the bed as I explained above, but your prep work instructions should make this onerous task easier because those steps will give the yarn breathing room. Thank you so much for this suggestion.
Wow, that sounds like a lot of work! I do hope this will help make your process go more smoothly and quickly!
@@henliahandmade5983 I decided to have a person from the LYS wind my Linen Quill hanks into cakes instead of continuing to fight with it. The shop has a heavy-duty electric winder. I will have them wind one set of LQ hanks every couple of months until it's all done. Since the H+HTW is a long term project, I'm in no hurry about the winding. I have enough wound for two wraps now,. Thanks for your interest.
Thank you, I’ve had such problems with tangles!
You just blew my mind.
Ha! I hope it helps =)
This is fab! Thank you so much! At the risk of giving out major facepalm vibes, I’m ashamed to admit the first thing I do is cut those little strands, then just start unwinding…… aaaaand cursing and wondering why my hanks are tangling lol Quick question, do you leave the yarn ties on once you’ve completed the straightening and flattening? Or do you cut them off before unwinding?
I used to do the same thing, which is why I figured out this trick!😅 You’ll want to cut off the ties before you begin to wind💗
