DO NOT PASS! MALIBU CLIMB STILL CLOSED after fires!?! Mulholland Highway - Rockstore Update Nov 2024
Update on the Rockstore climb near Malibu, CA that has been closed for over 5 years due to the Woolsey and Thomas fires that burned SoCal. Why is this road still closed after so long? After the devastating fires that burned over 3780,000 acres and claim 1,6000 homes, California was hit with it's second wettest year, causing massive mudslides, demolishing many of the roads and infrastructure in the area.
As of the time of this filming, the Rockstore is still closed but there has been steady progress in the last few months to get this road open to cyclist, motorist, and its residents.
The Rockstore climb is one of the most iconic climbs in Southern California, and has been a tried and true testing ground for world tour pros. Rockstore features a hairpin turn at the top called "the snake" that has been featured in many commercials, films, and photoshoots.

BUZZED by a motorcycle within feet | Was he too close? What this intentional road rage???
Переглядів 1,3 тис.10 місяців тому
Sharing a quick story that happened to me over the weekend. What do you think of this close pass by a motorcyclist on Mulholland Highway? Was this intentional road rage or not? The story goes, I'm descending a canyon road when I hear a motorcycle approaching at a quick speed. Once I hear him coming, I quickly move over against the shoulder to allow for safe passage. As he passes he accelerates ...

Bro this is a fantastic video explaining ceramic pulleys! Love this ❤❤❤❤
Good job Orange Helmut Guy. Glad you made it safe between the cement blocks. Cookies looked yummy!
That's how much my 2001 Bianchi Mega Pro weighs. If you take off the batteries and disc brakes you might get a great bike for your money otherwise stick with Vintage.
I used to come out to The Snake on weekends in my car, hang out at the top, check out all the cool cars and fast bikes, do a few runs up/down, then circle back to Decker and hit the PCH. I took my son up there all the time, just hanging out in the shade of that big tree up top. I think he was 2 years old the first time I brought him up there. I got some video casually driving down The Snake, around 2015 or so. I’ve really missed it being closed for so many years. That Woolsy fire was no joke though.
Another great video. So much great information. Thank you for making these videos. Can’t wait to go check it out.
Thank you for my new set of excuses 😂
I love riding roads that are closed but I like mountain biking more, going places motor vehicles can’t go.
I hope it stays closed
Brutal… just brutal… in my mind, these are three longer versions of Los Felix… I needed counseling after that… I’m good… 😂🍻
At least the one advantage to them actually opening the climb is that they might clean the road once in a while! Actual work on the repairs started early this year and was supposed to be done in May. For the past 4 years, it's been decent to ride but littered with debris. Nice video Harrison!
Yes I think we’ve all spent our share on tires to go to some maintenance lol
I know. Kids make things difficult.
The Rock Store climb is not in Malibu. It is in Cornell / Calabasas. It is named after the Rock Store restaurant at the base of the climb. The climb is also called "The Snake" by motorcycle riders. You can ride it during the week after 4. That is when city workers have left and gone home. It is night and dark by 5:15, though.
👍🏻👍🏻 ya daylight saving kills evening rides unfortunately.
My 2 favorite cyclists ride together as they reminisce about their time as young boys in Travel Town on their way to The Hollywood Sign. 😊
Thanks mothers!
Donna climbing Rockstore? Shocking! 😀
lol right? and Doug!
Great video. So nice to ride with in person and on the couch. Donna and Doug sightings always a delight.
Hey Rusty! Shocked you weren't with them
Good video brother. I heard the fire department doesn't want it opened. Like you said, some motorcyclists ride recklessly and get into accident almost every weekend. they're just sick and tired of it getting dispatched and have been lobbying to get the opening postponed.
I've heard from multiple sheriffs that no one wants that post, too difficult to manage all the bikers at once. God forbid they put a speed bump or stop sign here and there. There are homes there after all but hwy rules apply vs residential
PAVEMENT!! 🙌🏼
Ready for you guys to do repeats!
Also a roadie, I just about bought one of these but went for the Cervelo R5cx instead.
What area are you in? Similar terrain to what I'm showing?
@@theorangehelmetguy Arizona. Thanks for the video.
Love the team rides!
Always good motivation
if you have his plate #, you can report him. CHP will review your video and send him a ticket via mail. If he decides to fight it, you do have to take time off and show up in court with your video.
Don't waste your $$$ on garbage like this....reducing chain friction = is expensive! Also not a true and accurate statement just marketing Mombo...jumbo!
Nice! first time attending. Looking forward to it! Get it!
Great video !!! The wall is always super fun.
Hope to see you out there Paul!
After that ride you'll need that cookie for fuel lol
Always need a cookie big bro!
❤❤❤❤
What size do you have bike ? And what is Your height ?
@@konrad8347 I ride a 52 and 5’8”. 120mm stem and 89cm saddle height.
Nice video Harrison! You highlighted our local climbs really well!
Hey locals, I'm coming in from out of state and I have a question. I'm signed up for the Chocolate Chip (83 mi) route but I may not have the legs to pull of all the climbing. I was thinking of bypassing *one* of the climbs along PCH. Either Encinal Canyon/Mullholand hwy or Yerba Buena/Deer Creek. If you were going to do only one of these and skip the other, which one is the better of the two? By better, I mean being able to enjoy the views and having good road surface.
Hey there! Deer creek is by far the most rewarding view and descent, you can see the ocean the entire way and it really is unique, but, it's also the steepest to get up to. With that said, Encinal is great too but really only has 1 ocean lookout, Mulholland is really pretty mountain views. So I guess if you want more Ocean view do Deer Creek, and Mountain views Encinal. Hope that helps! I'll add once you're riding alongside others, your legs just may find a new gear and you'll do it all :)
@@theorangehelmetguy Thanks so much for the reply. I appreciate the assist. I've seen Safa Brian's video of the Deer Creek descent so I knew the view there would be epic. I just didn't know what I'd be missing on the other climb. Thanks for making this video!
Thanks for the video. In 2020, drove up by a car to the fence located about a 1/4 mile passing RockStar restaurant on Mulholland Hwy and could not drive beyond the point. Is the fence not there anymore so that you were able to get to the junction of Mulholland Hwy and Encinal canyon rd ? Really want to go back and ride bike there again so.. Thanks in advance for your reply.
cyclist have always been able to ride past the gate, but not cars. They are currently in the process of opening the road again, probably by the new year from the looks of it.
For an amateur cyclist, how brutal is the chocolate chip route? I’ve done rides of 85 miles with less climbing (think Tour de Palm Springs and longer, less steep climbs in Colorado), but I’m a bit intimidated for this route. Doable or should I do the sugar cookie?
like everything, it’s all about pace. If you have the fitness to do 85+ mile rides you have the legs for this and you’ll probably regret doing the sugar and wish you did more. both go up decker and portrero, so both routes hit the steepest parts anyway. You could always start with the chocolate chip route and skip Encinal and go straight to yerba, that takes one climb out, I believe a handful of people do that.
@@theorangehelmetguythanks so much!
Thanks for the route breakdown! Very well done 🤙🏻 First time rider at the Phils cookie fondo and excited for the incredible challenge. 🥵💯🚴🏼🤙🏻😎
awesome! See you out there!
Really well done video
thanks! will you be out there?
Thanks for this! Riding first time this year. Do you have one for the Sugar Cookie?
Hi there, so the sugar cookie parts are in this video too :) Basically you'll go up Decker Wall, then straight down Mulholland then it's exactly the same, so in this video skip the Latigo and Encinal part and that's the Sugar Cookie
@@theorangehelmetguy very helpful!!!
How did you know those were my exact words on Potrero last year?!
haha you weren't alone haha
I was all in on the double fudge but just getting back from 7 broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder a few weeks ago. I think this video has convinced me that the chocolate chip will be challenging enough given the shape (or lack thereof :)) I'm likely going in at. Thanks for laying it all out!
I did chocolate chip a couple of years ago believe me it's challenging enough. I ran into Phil on a ride once and he told me he doesn't recommend anyone do double fudge
Wow great to see you’re back on the bike! That sounds like a major injury and glad you’re good. You can always start the chocolate chip and skip a climb if you’re not feeling it. Either way hope to see you there!
double fudge takes a special type of person haha
Any recommendations for bike rental for the ride?
I don’t know if the fondo has partnered with anyone but you can give Serious Cycling in Thousand oaks a call or Trek in Westlake. They got demos depending on your size.
@@theorangehelmetguy thanks!!
can see the farmlands from my backyard; the cookie fondos seem like great ride(s), those climbs would make the cookies worthwhile, but, my legs are beginning to cramp thinking about the effort; learned a while back that the man Phil G. also went to the University of Florida ...
that's awesome! You should throw mini cookies at everyone as we pass by haha
Bruno Mars riding bikes? :). Loved the presentation. I will do this next year.
best comment ever!! Thank you!
Great video Harrison. Try to not get me crying this year. 🤦♂️
no promises LOL! See you out there
Great first time video! From Celsius to Fahrenheit= C times 9 divided by 5, plus 32. From Fahrenheit to Celsius= F minus 32, times 5 divided by 9. Will follow you from now on. Victor Rodriguez Las Vegas, NV
thank you!
I have the Ostro Vam TDF edition. It's an amazing bike. It looks amazing and climbs like a mountain lion 😅 Factor make fantastic bikes
Wow the TDF version is so nice, they are doing amazing paint jobs. you're lucky!
I’m using 100mm stem on my Ostro road bike would you recommend going to a 90mm stem for the gravel set up ?
So I'm no pro bike fitter so I would defer to them, but generally speaking, a shorter stem is going to give you a little more control especially on tight and technical areas. That's why MTB stems are so short. I would say #1 depends what's comfortable and #2 depends on your roads. If you have long sweeping gravel roads you're probably fine, but if you are on very technical areas shorter may be better.
I‘m using tire inserts on my gravel bike so I can go to 25 PSI (and probably even lower) on 38 tires. Really comfortable, fast and tons of grip even on really tough terrain…
Great suggestion Moe! Maybe next time I swap tires I'll throw some in on my mtb
Hi, great review. Very fair perspective you have given it from a roadie point of view. I’ve actually got one on order as I wanted just one bike and this ticks all the boxes. It will have a Shimano GRX Di2 2x
Awesome! You won't be disappointed, especially with Shimano.
What do you think would be the best color choise ; Black Chrome or Chameleon?
Personally I like the chrome. Chameleon is a little too gimmicky for me.
According to your comment about waiting until the battery is near full discharge, it appears necessary to have a spare battery.
would definitely recommend a spare in a saddle bag yes. I've known many riders that have had Sram die on them. My garmin head unit does show battery life so it's easy to see. not sure about wahoo
I would recommend it. I've had many friends run out of battery and it's always a sram bike. My garmin head unit does read battery levels on both shimano and sram, not sure about wahoo head units if they do that.
The Trail of geometry are 65 (F10) vs 57.3 (Ostro), which give you very different handling. Very few people understand the importance of this value in the geoemtry chart...
Couldn't agree more. I've recently got into MTB and same goes for the head tube angles and seat tube angle.
Very very good review!
Thank you kindly!
life of a cyclist! We get called names, yelled@, buzzed, just got to grow thick skin...I guess~ However, I find that having a Garmin radar helps me anticipate oncoming vehicles and move closer to side faster!
It's definitely a challenge no matter what. I've never used the varia but out here, the people that have it, hate it. It goes off A LOT and in groups you will definitely get the side eye. I can see for long rural areas it can definitely be beneficial especially if you're listening to music.
@@theorangehelmetguy is not good in group rides unless you bind it to others which in most group rides won't happen! So I do not use it in group rides I love my programmable "cliq" lights! Give it a try....
love it! keep riding!
Thanks! Will and am doing :)
Solid video! Just upgraded the pulleys on my GRX Di2 to Kogel 12/14 pulleys. Looking forward to testing them out when they arrive,
thank you! would love for you to follow up to see if my experience is similar to yours.
