89001 Testing July 2024
The installation of new safety systems and other overhaul work on the 89 at UKRL Loughborough has been completed. Testing of the locomotive, under power from the 25kV supply on the test track represented the one of the last items for our Engineering Team to undertake, proving that the locomotive is taking power correctly.
During the testing the 89 successfully took power on all six traction motors, this being a 'first' in its preservation history and the first time in almost 25 years the locomotive has run in this configuration.

The restoration 89001 took a major step forward today, 15 November 2020, with the locomotive's pantograph being raised on to an energised 25kV overhead wire for the first time in 20 years and the first time in the ownership of the AC Locomotive Group. The locomotive systems were energised and checked by our Engineers before the locomotive moved under its' own power for the first time in our own...

Our testing in the first video was not good enough to prove that the traction motor blowers on the 89 were working correctly. So we arranged another set of tests with improved power supplies and several engineers inside the locomotive to watch the test instruments. This test is only with one blower running, it gets quite noisy and there is a lot of air blown around as the traction motors are no...

In late September sunshine we continued work on 89001. This time we are testing the wheel slip and slide system on the locomotive. To do this test one of our engineers inside the locomotive operates a test box to simulate either a slip or slide condition which the locomotive's systems then convert into a brake application or brake release on an individual axle, the engineer outside the locomoti...

During the first half of 2015 we overhauled locomotive 86401 to return her to service. As part of the work we tested the operation of the tap changer; one engineer was in the cab operating the controls and another was in the locomotive equipment room checking the notch indicator on the tap changer mechanism.

Overhaul work on the 89 is progressing at Barrow Hill. We have been able to connect a low voltage (240V AC) shore supply to the locomotive to run and test some of the auxiliary systems. On 3 September 2016, for the first time in nearly 14 years, one of the traction motor blowers at number 1 end was energized.

It's over 20 years since I last worked on electric traction on the WCML but those sounds bring back good memories of working on 86/87/90 locos.

After 28 years I spent at Brush traction wabtec told us that all works are going to Doncaster and Loughborough will be wound down. So what's happening here?? Seems business is thriving.

YESSS, the badger is alive!! 🤩 I only ever saw her moving once under her own power, around 2000-ish in service with GNER. Had only ever seen her in a few books/magazines prior to that point and its been the same since - Definitely one of the UKs most unique and mysterious locos. Here's hoping she gets to VISIT the ECML again. Would be a wonderful sight to see, especially next to LNER's retro liveried Mk4 sets which also look amazing. Good work guys for getting this beast running again! 👌

Lovely to see what is probably the best AC loco ever built in the UK. I was very much involved in the design of the brake control and WSP system for her. On test runs with the International Demonstrator coaches her performance was stunning. Well done to the team who have done the restoration job. Pity that politics got involved regarding a fleet build. Did you ever find the spares which I had concealed behind the brake frame ?😊

Wow, what an achievement. I was involved with the initial testing and commissioning of the Class 89 and it was so sad that the BRB didn’t order any, just class 90s and 91s but I think it was political (?). On one light engine test run from Crewe to Stafford, the Brush engineers temporarily raised the settings for the motor current limits and I was sat in the drivers seat in the back cab, the traction inspector asked the driver to accelerate to line speed using the speed set (cruise control) but he didn’t specify how much traction effort. The acceleration dropped me of the seat and left me in a heap on the floor. Very impressive. From memory, the final figures for the ride index were close to that of a mk 3 coach, not bad for a loco!

@@paulsteane4168 thanks for clarifying. That must have been a challenge in its self as I imagine components were hard to get hold of. Yes. Authorisation would have been a nightmare. This project deserves a IMechE lecture, it would be fascinating to know how you approached the technical challenges you have/had and how you managed approvals. I managed to get haulage behind the 89 under GNER in ‘98 when they were running Bradford - Kings X. It would be amazing to see it get ORR authorisation for mainline use again
